The ENCOUNTER - Step by Step Paintup

Thanks for the comments. It was the first I've painted a human...most of my stuff has been sci-fi, aircraft or cars.

Thats looking real sweet Jason....pants look great...clean but great...as do the boots....not too sure that the dark outlining of the details in the torso are nessasary tho....moody lighting will bring out all those details in the end....dont get me wrong...it still looks good...i'm just saying its not nessesary to paint shadows when there is that much detail in the scuplt as there will be REAL shadows in those areas once it is displayed anyways.
Cool 5 oclock shadow aswell man....nice touch

Talcum powder makes a good medium to use as mud for diorama. Real mud is too large for scale. Some white glue, talcum powder and acrylic paint mixed together makes a convincing mud.

Jason, love your paint up.... I think the boots need a repaint, though. Look carefully at the hemmed areas on the side of the boot. You'll see that they correspond to a jungle boot, rather than a standard issue type boot. Having worn both in the Army, I thought something was a little amiss in your photo.

I agree with Carl. But if they are covered in mud you wouldn't see the real color of the boot anyway.
When I got issued my jungle boots(USMC) they were the green ones in the photo. Some Marines got black ones or even made them black with boot polish.

And holy cow that's coming along great!

I dont think Jason intends to muddy the shoes completely. I might have suggested it, but I didnt mean the whole shoes, only a little on the sides and toe-tips. I saw one of Joe Dunaways paintjobs on a dinosaur and the muddy feet gave it that little extra. B)
And the paintjob is looking great Jason, keep it up!

Good eye Carlart. its all in the details. Is this what Arnie wore in the film?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The only reference I had was Narin's pictures which are low-res, and the movie stills which are too dark.

-I used brown for the boots to make the laces stand out more. I may paint them all black since they will have a brownish mud on them anyway.
-As for the shading lines - not to fret - they are just to add depth to Arnie and will be misted over with a light flesh color. They look goofy and cartoony at the moment, but won't be for long.
-Yes the pants and skin on Arnie are clean but only for the moment. Something Narin did a phenomenal job at was making him look dirty, but not too dirty. I'll have the same challenge with the Pred - he'll look clean up until the end, and then the armor will need to have battle damage added.
-I'm not happy with his mouth/teeth so those will be repainted as well.
-Once everything is done I will try to use a gloss coat to make Arnie's skin and pants (and probably the Pred) wet B)

Again, thanks for all the feedback

Ok, I'm going to dirty Arnie up later, but for now he's done, except for his damn 5 o'clock shadow. I can't seem to get it right. I wanted a darker look, but eff'ed it up by making it look too much like a beard. Going to try to paint it up the same way it was before.

I misted the fleshtone paint over the skin to cover the veins and shadowing. I redid the mouth so that I could make out all the teeth and highlighted the eyes slightly

Started over by painting flesh back on:

Then redid the stubble:

And toned it down just a bit:

Ok...I think I'm leaving it as is now lol! The horrible thing about being a perfectionist is that you can't stop until its just right...or until your beer is empty and you have to get another one !

Man this is looking ****** awesome! Are you airbrushing, hand painting, or a mixture of both? I've never painted figures so I'm just baffled at how people can get so much detail on something so small.

Kick ass job Jay! I really appreciate the huntorial. It is inspiring to me and also has helped me out a lot. Keep up th killer job!

Looks fantastic so far. What's this kit going for anyway? I'm getting more and more interested in it as this build comes along.

ha... that's so sweet.... i bet i missed the answer to this, but I take it you're the sculptor?
