The Doctor's Name (Doctor Who sonic screwdriver prop stand)

After modelling a ton of Doctor Who sonic screwdrivers and having them 3d printed, I've been trying my hand at other things. Nothing fantastic in the works yet but as I was making a stand for myself for holding my 11th Doctor's sonic Wiimote, I wondered if anyone else would be interested in something similar? I'm not sure who else has the 11th Doctor's sonic Wiimote, but if you do, this might be of interest to you.

It's the name of the Doctor in Gallifreyan (as seen in "A Good Man Goes To War"), extruded, with the center circle of the design housing the butt of the Wiimote so it would stand upright in the holder. I've designed an alternate version that is just the name without the hole for the Wiimote, but since I designed it initially for this purpose, I'm presenting it as such. Here's a crude example of the Wiimote in the stand:

It's a quick Photoshopping so it's not exactly to scale, the stand is a bit smaller in comparison to the Wiimote.

As usual with my 3d printed designs, it's hollow to cut back on costs, but specifically designed with a lip around the inside of the bottom so it can be filled with whatever you want to weigh it down and if it's a material that hardens but doesn't bond with the plastic, it will stay put inside of the stand due to that lip. The extra material around the bottom of the outside is there to include the smaller circles that aren't connected to the main mass of the name.

I'd also like to design an alternate version that implements the USB cable that came with the Wiimote but the stand is too short to hold the cable as is, so some remodeling would have to be done first. Either the stand itself would have to be taller, or there would have to be an additional piece connecting the USB cable from the rear of the stand.

An additional option would be to have it include alternate fittings that are inserted into the stand that conform to all the different 11th Doctor sonic props. The initial sized hole could fit the CO toy and have a ring that fits into the hole as well that housed the Wiimote, and another that fits the universal remote. Just a thought on the idea to make it more useful and interchangeable with the other props.

smashing idea especially with alternate fittings it would look so cool cold cast with metal maybe a nice bronze for the 11th and aluminium for the 10th with green and blue accents respectively

And as a followup to that, it should be noted that since it's a basic z-axis extrusion, casting the piece would be incredibly easy. A simply clay or plaster mold could be made simply by pushing the face into a soft surface, letting it dry, then removing the original and filling with your choice of material. The way that additional fittings would be designed, you could push any fitting into the hole for the casting process, and essentially cast one stand for each remote type from the same base and appropriate fitting.

It could even, theoretically, have an insert for each circle in the name so that multiple sonic props could be housed all at once - up to 5, 6 or even 7 different sonic screwdrivers. The one caveat there would be the varying tiers of the current design - they would all have to be even for the inserts to fit all available bases. Also, putting a sonic in each circle would detract greatly from the overall design since you would lose a lot of surface design elements cutting out holes everywhere, but the idea is there. Come to think of it, there are so many sonic replicas out there I couldn't possibly design housings for all of the variations people would want...

I suppose I could gauge the interest in specific models, but I think the 11th is most appropriate since the appearance of the name design coincides with the 11th Doctor.

If nothing else, it's a good alternative to forking over 36-46 pounds for this stand:

It only holds one sonic :p

Any other thoughts in the idea?

I wonder if it would be possible to produce these with a standard usb jack thing as opposed to the one specifically for the wii remote sonic, because then we could hold the new wand company tenth doctor sonics on it.

That was one of my considerations. I'd love to have it be a docking bay as well as a display stand. The primary issue with that is designing it to fit a specific USB cable that's shallow enough to fit below the inset and still have room for the cord to curve away and out of the back. Although a snug fit is best, so doing so and still implementing the alternate fittings for different sonics would be ideal.

It also occurred to me that my design is raised - it should be inset to be more accurate.

shouldn't be to hard to include usb port something like this

the new 10th remote is a micro usb so even easier

I wonder if the stand could be designed to use one of two third party USB cables that could fit one or the other. The Wiimote uses a USB mini B, if I'm not mistaken. I'm sure a company out there somewhere makes one of each that are exactly the same up to the plug so they could be interchangeable. I'll look into that as an option.

In the mean time, who would be interested in a stand that housed all of the CO toys? There are 5 larger circles in the name and two smaller ones that could also be used if need be, for a total of 7. With 5 it could house the classic 3rd, 4th, 9th, 11th, and River sonic. Or maybe some would prefer to swap out one of the classics for the Laser on account of the 3rd and 4th being similar enough in appearance.

But this one is made by the same man who made the sonic for the show!
