Hey just wanted to show everyone what I am working on. This will be one of my first props I will be making.
The plan is to 3D print all the main parts, with the tubing sections being made of brass piping. I am also planning to use some type of electronics for the lcd dial interface but I haven't really decided what to use yet for this.
Being this is my first prop I realized quickly that I needed reference materials to build from. I mainly used screen captured material in conjunction with a 1/4 scale Hot Toys gun. There is also a couple pictures of the prop from some museum that I saw floating around google, but I verified it isn't 100% accurate to the movies prop so I kind of ignored it.
There are minor differences between the toy and the movies props so I adjusted accordingly.
I also bought the Dark Knight Manual for additional reference for the sticky bullet itself and they have a nice view of the prop.
After gathering it all I made a 3d model in sketchup and started printing on my Makergear M2.
These are test prints, made them in red so I can see any potential defects easily against a black background.
As soon as I finish the design I will do final prints in a higher resolution so it requires less sanding. I will also use ABS plastic instead of PLA so I can use an acetone vapor to smooth out the print even more.
This prop is really part one of my plan to make everything in the armory from The Dark Knight from batarang to grappling gun to the very random weapons that weren't thoroughly introduced in any of the movies but are still there. Eventually this will lead to the armory itself which I will modify to hide my bluray collection in.
I hope to have this prop completed within two months. Afterwards I plan to make all the 3d plans available on shapeways so anyone can 3d print their own copies or order them preprinted. I found its very fun to make your own props and I'd like to give that freedom to those who don't know how to create 3d models or who don't have a 3d printer.
I will be updating with pictures as I print out more test prints leading up to the completed prop.
Thanks for looking !
