The Blue Box - The TARDIS has landed!

Re: The Blue Box

Looking forward to finishing this version up.
I'm really glad we took our time with this, so far it's been worth the wait.

Back in the shop Monday to begin paintwork on the posts and doors.

Re: The Blue Box

Finished up base coating the posts today and decided to take a break from that and start toning and weathering the back wall.

Here is the wall as I began the initial layer of toning color.
The "toning glaze" is a custom muxture I made using a dark teal, flat black, transparent glaze and water. It is applied in thin, gradual layers using a sea sponge:

I ran out of time today, so only got a chance to do a single pass on the right side, but you get the idea:

Re: The Blue Box

Coming together really beautifully! Great to also see some of the innovations that you've added in. Always interesting to see how different people choose different methods to get to the same end result. Great stuff!!

Also so awesome to see as many tardis builds on page one as there are Iron Man builds in the costume section. lol.

Re: The Blue Box

It's times like this that I wish I had the skill to build...anything. I have a blue door to my office. I thought about painting it like a Tardis door. Impressive work! I look forward to this thread.

Re: The Blue Box

It's times like these I wish I had the storage space for one of these. I'd offer to store it (assembled, of course) so it wouldn't take up space when not in use by the owner. ;)

Visually, our boxes will appear to be very similar yes.
I was also thinking how nice it is to see multiple Tardis builds - nice break from the norm around here.
Glad you chimed in - Once I catch my breath I will be in touch with you concerning a fun idea I had...

Sure thing, just make sure you have a vaulted ceiling - this thing is a beast.

Re: The Blue Box

Hey GeneralFROSTY,

Beautiful. And inspiring, I think I'm going to try this. Two questions if I might.

One, What font is the "Police public call box" sign? Looks like Arial Condensed to me, but maybe not.

Two, regarding the panels- yours look very nice. quite well done even, built like a conventional door would be, but they look different to me from the reference pictures you posted. From post 119:

From the above picture, it looks like the "rails" and the "cross members" (not sure of the correct names) of the doors and walls were assembled to meet square, then routed with a chamfer after assembly, then the corners were cleaned up by hand with a chisel or whatever.

Yours have the chamfer installed before assembly and look quite good really, but different. Was this just easier, or is the reference not correct for your version, or... what?

Anyway- it's magnificent! You can be very proud.

Re: The Blue Box

Not sure why it looks like that, but our box is being built by a Master cabinet maker, so whatever methods he's chosen can rest assured be considered the best way to construct this.
Aside from that, our plans were for the Smith box, it just so happens this first one is being painted 10th Doctor style.

Re: The Blue Box

There is a difference in how this joint was made between the Eccleston and Tennant boxes vs the Smith box.

Your photo there is of the former, the latter is what is being used on this box. The Smith build is easier to do than the Eccleston and Tennant boxes are.

Thank you for chiming in. Not sure why they would joint the panels together like that.

Re: The Blue Box

I feel sure the joint of the rails and stiles was purely an antithetic choice for both. Maybe after they realized how much effort it takes to manually chop those inside corners on the Eccleston / Tennant boxes drove them to the more simple execution on the Smith box.

Re: The Blue Box

Honestly as a bigger fan of the Tennant box myself, I much prefer the way the joins were made on the Smith box.

You, a bigger fan of the Tennant box? Lol!

I hit the shop hard tonight, driving the 45 minutes there right after work.
Put in a solid six-hour paint session, so much to get done for our upcoming event, I didn't leave the shop until well after midnight.

Backsides of the three walls and underside of the roof painted flat black:

Before I begin the toning glaze and weathering over the fully dried base color, 320 grit sandpaper is gently stroked over all surfaces to remove the rough texture the wood produces after the initial coating. This helps keep the surface smooth for topcoating later.
People who see this in person will no doubt want to touch it, so a professional finish is key:

All the walls finished and ready for topcoat. The access panel is finished, just not hinged to the wall yet:

The roof. Built tough and to precision standards:

The fruits of my labor so far. I'm exhausted. Glad I have a supply of Jammie Dodgers to come home to (thank you Brian):

I should have all four posts finished next, then I can begin base coating the doors and sign boxes.

Re: The Blue Box

Freaking gorgeous Jimmy! And the TARDIS is nice too ;) And there are more cookies where they came from! Must keep the maker happy with offerings and sacrifices.

Re: The Blue Box

It's great to see this finally coming together in color.
I'm glad every inch of this was made to flawless precision, everything will assemble tight and clean even after all the paintwork.

Looking forward to taking this masterpiece on tour!
