The Amazing Spiderman Zentai build

I know what you mean. It's really tempting to buy since money is a factor and I might just wear it a few times. However, there are free prints available. Keep a tab on your spending. I'm curious to see how much the end result will cost. Does the shoe feel 'sloppy' when you walk since there is no shoe part on the top of your foot?

Well I'm putting the mesh of the top part of the shoe into the inside of the suit so I will still have the shoe bit there. It'll just feel like wearing ordinary pool shoes so no hanging sloppyness :) I'm keeping a running total of how much it all costs and I'll post a break-down at the end.

Just so you know, your suit is coming from china, not the USA.

Not that it makes a difference, you just keep saying the USA..

Oops, old thread, my bad..

Ah thank you I realised that recently cos they sent me the wrong suit and I had to send it back. Nightmare!! My proper suit should be here next week and I'll start posting photos and WIP stuff as I go :D

Ok my suit arrived, it's not perfect and zentai-zentai ruined it again by giving me a useless U-shaped zipper which is NOT what I wanted or ordered, and also they stuck these enormous white lenses on it which I hate. Here are photos:
spideyback.jpgspideyfront.jpg
I've now pulled the crappy EVA lenses off the suit as I intend to replace them with some that I cannibalised from a pair of cool looking sunglasses. They don't look 100% accurate but I made them myself and they have excellent visibility so I'm happy. This is them:
spideylens.jpg
but I've been left with loads of gluey residue!!
spideyhead.jpgWill someone please help me with getting rid of it!! Ugh I'm so irritated by Zentai Zentai, and now I know they stole the pattern, the next Spidey suit I do I will DEFFO buy a printed one because this one is truly rubbish quality. The only good thing about it is the pattern, and that's the only bit that Zentai Zentai had nothing to do with.

Ooh, yeah wouldn't be happy with those eye marks.. Why is the u zip useless?

No I'm really angry haha!! Do you know any way to get rid of it?

The U zip, I hate it. I can't do it by myself which immediately is a pain. And also I want it so that if I like, I can unzip from the top of my head to my neck, and just take the mask off, leaving it hanging forward on my chest, but keep the rest of the suit done up. But I can't do that with the U zip. I have to take the whole top of the suit off.

Nope, dunno how to get the glue off sorry. What suit did they send you the first time that was wrong?

It was the TASM2 suit which I didn't want, and it wasn't even a very nice pattern, it didn't have any fine details like the brick print or honeycombs.

are you gonna puffpaint it?
Yeah I am indeed! I've been doing a lot of it and I've got several ultra-dramatic photos to show :D NB: PICTURE HEAVY

The sole that I glued to the suit, here it is drying. I used E6000 glue and several clips to glue the toes in place. For the main sole area I glued it whilst wearing the suit. I put a carrier bag over my foot and then put the upper of the pool shoe into the suit and wore it, then the sole on the outside and glued the whole lot together. It works wonderfully.image[7].jpeg

Here is the black Tulip puffy paint on the sleeve and shoe. For the most part I used the standard nozzle straight out of the Tulip bottle. image.jpeg

Dramatic photo of the webbing on the back. For the back and chest areas I used a fine 0.7mm nozzle which piped much finer cleaner professional lines.image[6].jpeg

Here is the front of the suit using the fine 0.7mm nozzle. image[5].jpeg

Now I've finished the black puff paint I started doing the honeycomb pattern. As you can see I used a different tip than what came on the bottle, I again used the 0.7mm tip.image[3].jpegimage[4].jpegimage[1].jpeg
Dramatic photo of the honeycomb dry. It looks totes beaut!!!
image[2].jpeg

Dramatic photo of me drawing the remainder of the puffy paint on the legs. That's actually my knee not my right arm. Believe it or not this is a selfie!
image.png

The lenses on the suit. They're not glued on or anything I just put them on the fabric to see how it would look. Yay!image[8].jpeg

A COUPLE TIPS I PICKED UP/LEARNED
1.
DON'T use puffy paint for the black of the suit, unless you intend to raise it with steam from an iron. I didn't want to do this so I've left it un-puffed and it sticks to itself a lot, really hard so I have to peel it off. If you want the lines shiny, use Tulip Slick paint instead. This is what I used for the blue honeycomb and what I have for the red.

2.
When doing the black lines, start on the feet and work your way up the legs, then the hands and arms, then the shoulders and back, then the chest and finally the face. This is in order of importance so that if you mess up on the feet it isn't really noticeable, and you can learn a lot about best practices before you do the important areas like the face.

3. Don't buy from zentai zentai as they will mess up your order repeatedly

4.
Tulip paint bottles are designed to stand on their lids. Make use of this. I didn't notice until someone told me.

5. When doing the honeycomb, as you can see in the photos, draw zig-zag lines first. I saw this tip elsewhere and the person that posted it wasn't clear on whether they let the zig-zag lines dry first but I let mine dry and then drew the straight lines in. It's totes teed but it works really well.

6. When doing the honeycomb, start with the blue on the waist at the back, as I have done above. We all want to start somewhere fun first but you just cannae. Otherwise you would ruin it.

7. Make sure to get some fine point nozzles! Otherwise it will come out really messy and thick and ugly.

8. DON'T BUY FROM ZENTAI ZENTAI because they really will mess up your order repeatedly!!!

I do have some good news on the Zentai Zentai front because apparently, the first incorrect suit that arrived, that I had to send back, has not been delivered properly an is being returned to me. Zentai Zentai asked me to send it back to them once I get it, to the right address. They've messed up so many of my orders and given me a measly $5 refund which I was NOT happy with. So I told them I have no intention of returning the suit to them once I get it. I told them I would put it on eBay and they are welcome to bid on it. The money I make from selling it I will split 50-50 with the original designer of the suit design that I've received. Sounds like justice to me.

Anyway #rantover sorry it dragged on for so long! Hope you like the pics :)

Hey ZachD, sorry about your suit troubles man. I am truly saddened by reading this thread. Like you, I never even knew about this zentai-zentai stealing until I got here even though I watched like 10 youtube video tutorials on spiderman costumes. Youtube is how I found RPF by the way.

Anyways, I think people should stop giving you a hard time about this. Not every one can afford a $600+ costume. I definitely cannot.. hell I was saving up even for a cheap zentai suit but now it looks like I will not buy one. :( I mean, starting from scratch, I have to buy tools (dremel/heat gun/mannequin) and paints and the shoes, etc and that alone will cost me $250 dollars. And I don't even have a suit yet. Then there's the problem with the LENSES, face shell (got one for 10 bucks from Kmart), web shooters etc. I spent 40 bucks on shapeways getting lenses but I learned from another forum pro Jeck (thanks again man! :D) that they will eventually go back to the flat shape, which I did not know before. So I may have to shell out more money for lenses. I do not have this money, so I understand where you are coming from and want to spend 70 bucks on the zentai suit that looks decent for the price in my opinion. I tried to cut corners and save money by buying a cheap $10 mask instead of the legit shell....but there is only so much you can do with only scissors and cardboard.

Unfortunately, the only other cheap option is the zentai-zone suit which does not look as good in my opinion. I guess this means I will not be able to make a spiderman costume at least in the next few years until I get more cash to build up the supplies I need to make this and buy a print (then there's the problem of learning to sew...I cannot afford a seamstress... man this is just getting harder) I may only be able to make a mask for now... I just hoped this was a nice hobby I could get into but money is truly a limiting factor and I cannot buy the zentai suit because it is bad in principle, and in addition based on this thread it looks like the hate/ban hammer will be brought down very hard on my face if I did buy it. Truly caught between a rock and a hard place.... I now realize perhaps this hobby is not for me right now, maybe a few years from now when I can afford a print.

Anyways, this is a great forum and you guys are all true artists in every sense of the word!!! :thumbsup good luck with your costumes, they look very inspiring to a newb like me. I will continue to enjoy your pictures. :)

No luck getting the glue off the mask?

Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk
No unfortunately not :( I'm probably going to cut along the glue lines horizontally and then stitch it back up. I'm so annoyed because it's ruining the look of my mask!!!

Heya :D Thanks for your message! Yeah it is very sad that this happens :( It's lose-lose either way. I suppose you could buy the zentai suit and then pay a bit of money to the original creator? Most people seem to be charging like $30-$40, there's also some free patterns out there too. I would ask the original creator first that this is ok, but if they say yes then you won't have to spend anywhere near as much.

I used a pair of sunglasses for my lenses, no heat gun needed, just sandpaper and a black sharpie. Very cheap :D And my shoes were $11 pool shoes from ebay. There's little things here and there that you can do to save a lot of money. My suit is not going to be 100% accurate but it is going to be something I made myself with my own ideas, and it's going to be a lot cheaper too!
The web shooters I am buying from Lightman on Shapeways as I want them to look good, but other than that I really haven't spent very much. I've also used the crappy $10 kiddies' face shell and after sanding it, cutting it and doing so many other things to it, it works a treat. There's always a cheaper way :D Good luck sir on your quest and I hope you can buy a print soon :D

I managed to get the glue off the suit! My seamstress came today, she's a wonderful lady called Tracy from a company called Acula Creations. If you live in the south-east kent area of England, she's fabulous. She's going to put a zip in down the back of the hood so I can take it off forwards without removing the whole mask! She recommended putting some cloth over the glue and ironing it on the highest temperature and it worked almost perfectly. A small amount of dye came off on the cloth, and on the ironing board too haha. But it looks SOOO much better, here is a photo after the glue work (see earlier in the thread for a 'before' photo)
image (12).jpeg

It looks so wonderful I'm really chuffed.

I also bought some Neodymium magnets today. My lenses are very gifted in that, purely by coincidence, they have little niches by the inner and outer corners from the (now removed) arms and nose bridge. Perfect size to put some magnets in. I bought a pack of 50x 2mm diameter, 0.5mm thick discs which will fit perfectly. More photos to come! I'm so happy with my life right now.
EDIT: Can someone please give me some tips on gluing the faceshell to the fabric? What glue do I need to use that won't soak through the fabric? Thanks! :D

I wouldn't glue the faceshell in, I just let the Lycra hold it in place on my face and it works pretty well. When I have been gluing fabric I have been using 'sellys multi grip' it's a contact adhesive that is pretty thick so it doesn't soak through unless you use too much

Ah ok thanks :D Well unfortunately I have to glue the face shell in because when I cut the eye holes I cut them too big! So I need to stretch them into place ever so slightly and then stick them there.

My magnets arrived but my damned lenses don't fit 100% flush with the face shell!! I've bought some Milliput which is two tubes of putty that you mix together and then mould into shape and it sets hard. Like REALLY hard. So I'm going to mix it up and stick it to the face shell in the right places, then push the lenses down into it to make sure they fit perfectly. Hooray for cobbling together all these different things into a Spidey suit eventually!!! :D

I reckon the Milliput will arrive today so I'll make it all up and stick the magnets onto the mask, and then I can FINALLY wear it with the lenses!!! I'm totes excited for that. The magnets that arrived are fairly strong, but obviously as they are only 2mm wide by 0.5mm deep, their pull is limited. Three would be enough to hold each lens but I'm going for six because I want it to feel really firm, I don't want it to be cheap and loose.

You can apparently now order custom costumes on zentai zone, so you can either use one of ken's files or buy one of orhadar's and send it to them. Or if you choose to go with zentai zentai, they have kind of redeemed themselves in my opinion. They have taken down the stolen prints and now require you to buy from orhadar first.

This suit is looking fantastic so far! Especially those puff painted honey combs.
I love what you're doing with ebaying the other suit, and I can't wait to see the finished product!
