The Abyss - Deepcore Rig - Accurate reference?

25+ years ago I built a CGI model of about 70% of the deepcore rig from the abyss, but abandoned the project as the raytracing software (Amiga based) I was using at the time couldn't handle multiple lights scattering through 'water'. I had in the back of my mind to one day create a physical model of deepcore...

Roll around to 2016 and I'm going to build me a deepcore. It's not going to be a quick build as I have a 'few' other projects on the go, but it's going to happen and I'm in the preliminary 'collecting reference' phase of the project.

This isn't going to be a studio scale miniature... of any of the models they used. I'm going to keep it to <50cm or so front to back. This is small enough for me to be able to complete in a reasonable timeframe, display once complete - while also being large enough to capture 'enough' detail of the rig.

Once I've built the basics of the rig in 3D (Probably Maya) I'll set my scale and start assembly. The plan is to use off the shelf tubing for the habitation pods, and 3D print / scratch build the custom shapes and finer details. The outer 'cage' I'm imaging will be a combination of plastic rods and 3D printed parts.

While I'm hoping to be as accurate as possible, my build scale will mean some of the finer detailing I remember rendering back in the day isn't going to make it into this build.

So what I'm looking for at the moment is the best resources I can find. My 'Abyss' folder has every easily available pic of the rig I've found over the years, but I feel I'm missing the 'mother load' and could do with some help.

Anyone have any really good deepcore source material? 3D models? Access to any surviving miniatures? I don't have my files from the 90s :(

I'd also be interesting in talking to anyone who'd like to join me in this endeavour. I can't be the only one who'd like to own a deepcore rig of their very own.

Thanks

I can't wait to see you tackle this. I forget where, but at one point one of the actual model-makers was here talking about the subs I think. He would be somebody to track down for sure.

always wanted to build a model of deepcore.
DaveG is the guy on the rpf who might be able to help you.
i guess you have the dvd special edition with the archive section, quite a few pix in it,and all those pix have been uploaded on to a couple of sites.can't remember which ones.
also coming out next year is the bluray and lets hope more extra's we haven't seen.

DaveG is definitely your guy. He built the miniatures for the film. As of the last I heard, he was working as a Disney Imagineer.

No idea how close to the final result these are though.
