the absolute BEST Star Trek tunics ?

i just thought the tunics were pull overs like my replica my mom and dad bought me back in the day... never even knew they had zippers in them until afew months ago ..

Here's a bit of enlargement on Kirk's braid from "This Side of Paradise" (posted originally by winstonwolf)...

braid_kirk_TSOP.jpg

that's pretty ratty braid all right. One of the "S" shapes seems to have fallen off. There seems to be some kind of glittery gold foil type of element to the braid as well. Scotty's braid seems flatter and more glittery.

BTW note how much Shatner's shirt has shrunk in that last pic... his braid is halfway up his arms. The collar is so tight around his neck that it's bunching up.

Somebody has short-shirted Shat. :D

I wonder if the braids really were removed and replaced every day before and after dry cleaning. The insignias would be easy enough, but it seems to me the braids would be too labor intensive to redo every morning.

Plus, as can be seen above, the braids go INTO the seam. So they were ripping out the sleeve seam every day, too? I doubt that even more.

Them being left on would explain the rattyness. Grist for the mill: years ago, in a thread similar to this, someone posted a framegrab of a rather fresh and unweathered braid (on an admiral or commodore uniform, IRRC). There were threads of several different colors in it, not just gold. The speculation at the time was that those threads faded after dry cleaning.

I'm of the opinion that the braids and insignia were only removed and replaced when the shirts had shrunk too much and needed to be altered/let out.

In "The Paradise Syndrome," there's a scene in which Miramanee tries to take off Kirok's tunic in order to prepare him for his bath. After feeling around the tunic a bit, she asks quizzically, "How does this open?" :p

i'm guessing, but i would say that "flap" might have been where the two ends of the braids meet, and without the use of a digital embroiding machine they might have tried to hide the seam....

Actually you might have had reason to think this because it seems that way in the series. For example, in "Naked Time", after his medical examination, Spock puts his uniform shirt back on... we don't see him put it over his head, but we do cut back to him pulling the tunic down over his black T-shirt. The impression you get is that he must have slipped the tunic on over his head.

I grew up with a Donmoor Star Trek shirt (something I think any Star Trek kid of the early '70s remembers fondly) and have always wanted an awsome replica shirt for my collection.  But I also want to throw out another idea at the same time.  If we were to find an artist to turn out an accurate replica uniform shirt sutable for display and the occasional con or get togeather could they not also replicate the 1975 Donmoor shirt for fun?  It would be something fun to wear that would look good without worring about damaging the actual replica.  Just a thought.

Back from the corner to again ask if a replica Doonmoor pullover (of course adult sized and short sleeved) might be possible? :angel As Dave said above he'd be in for both, and I'll bet others would be too. Its like a Star Trek Field of Dreams. If you sew them people will come, and while wearing the shirt it will be as though they've dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories of playing with Mego "action figures" and Exploration Sets will so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. :rolleyes

So what does everybody think? Oh and just on a whim...

the talk of the braid got me thinking some one mentioned the dashes were just sewn onto the waves
I was watching 20,000 leauges under the sea and Nemo's jack has the exact match two waves wrapped together if one can visualise one single line of braid it is a wave there is a valley and a crest I will try to grab some caps and post

the zipper function
this probably has been touched on before but I will toss in my ideas
the zipper was part of the design right from the get-go not for the unique look but to prevent damage to the actors make up especially nimoy's now on to the shrinkability the velour one would think when the shirts got so tight one could see what the actor had for lunch. not to mention the sleeves any way one would think it was time for a new shirt. I have read and seen in pics whole bolts of this fabric were purchased and custome dyed.
anyone else have some insight to share.

It's easy enough to modify the existing design to do a Donmoor type of shirt for those that want them.

Here's a really unusual shot of Eddie Paskey ("Lt. Leslie") with the shirt unzipped to the armpit.

paskey-tunicunzip.jpg

For some reason Paskey seems to be wearing Captain's stripes on his sleeves. Paskey played multiple roles on the show as various Enterprise crewmen; perhaps here he is being pressed into service to double for Shatner in a long shot or something.

The pic is off of Paskey's personal web site, he has some more interesting behind the scenes pix there. Check it out. :D

This one is obviously first season, note the tight braid. Paskey's site claims this is from "Return of the Archons," but Shatner appears in local costume in that episode, not his uniform.

The pic of De Kelley looks like "Arena".

:lol Yes. Yessss. Cool. Ok, ok, I'm calm. Wow, a great replica of the actual Tunic and now the 1975 shirt too? Awesome. What do you need from us? Oooo what about a color pallet? These colors are taken from images of actual 1975 shirts I found on the net (well ok the green one is mine :rolleyes ).

Thanks again, you've made my week. :D

Found it on Celeste Yarnall's site.

She played what's her name in that episode. :D [/b]

Yeoman Martha Landon, "The Apple."

She calls Chekov "Pav."

"My name's Celeste, Mr. Shatner..."

"Oh yeah. Whatever...you see I got this little number in a shop..."

"Will, you, can, I, finish my thought here? Thank you. As I was saying, I saw this little beauty on Santa Monica Blvd last night and thought, if you wanted, we could, if you wern't doing anything later..."

"Actually, I have a script meeting later with Walter."

"A 'script meeting' with...Walter?"

"Walter."

"Walter...the grip?"

"Walter Koenig"

"..."

"Mr. Chekov?"

"OH WALTER. really?..."

RIGHT. That's it. This post has run it's lot. It was kind of funny, you know, just there in the beginning when it seemed like the good Captain was about to, but well it's all gone a bit awkward. So. do, the, next, POST.
