Well, Bill's not a particularly big guy,

Yeah. I was taller than him when I first saw him in person at a Trek Con in New York in 1976?

Ah the Magic of Hollywood...and high heels. :lol

Not complicated, just requires proper sizing to fit who it's made for.

The Pattern for the first Season wrap-around was available at ASAP taken directly from the Original.

I don't think they are available anymore though.

Yeah. Looks like the thread was deleted by someone. Today, as a matter of fact. Maybe someone doesn't want anyone besides them to make the tunic?

lol

OK.  I give in.  Since there's considerable interest, I'm going to offer these on my site.

Star Trek TOS Uniform Tunics

~ GM

GM --- your "gold" fabric looks beige, and it might help if on your webpage you offer custom tailored tunics?

just my worthless $.02

dave

Everything we make is custom tailored. I just listed a size range for people that don't bother to read the measurement charts. And, we can dye the fabric any color you want, including the "avocado" gold, but the "gold" sample provided is representative of the photographic look of the TOS tunics.

thanks for clearing that up for me ... is the dying service an extra cost, or is it included in your service?

dave

It's a few bucks for the dye and a little extra labor, but I'm willing to eat the cost on the dying for those who want the avacado velour.

i see the avacado color on your page.. VERYYYY interesting ..

this is what i meant by beige color compared to the gold.. i'd like to see what you can do with your dyes for more of this type of gold color... which or who's braids do you use?

thanks for the info ..
dave

I use the same braid they offer at roddenberry.com. And the gold you're showing is just "too" sparkly for my taste, and too orange.

Pfft. :lol Little late for that as that Pattern has made the rounds before.

Comes as no surprise though when you know who was involved with it.

For some reason TOS Tunics attracts the weirdos, scam artists, and flakes. :rolleyes

Present Company excluded though. ;) :)

The sparkles are really being highlighted by flash photography, they don't look that way all the time, but the real tunics do have that exact same quality.

Compare the pic Karl posted of a real tunic...

to Dave's pic...

And to me they look pretty close.

To me, anyway... :)

Ah yes, the first season wrap. Well that shirt really IS a green color, which I could call "avocado" with no problem.

You know, when I read these quotes from Bill Theiss regarding Kirk's shirt being a green or avocado color, I wonder if he's speaking ONLY of those shirts that were uniquely worn ONLY by Shatner. Those would be the wraps, and they are indeed green. The "command" color was worn by a lot of other people as well.

If that's what Theiss meant, then the information is of no use in determining the "correct" Command color. :lol

EW_kirkwrap04.jpg

Also note the effect of lighting. There's a lot of blue and red light flying around on those sets. To accentuate the "evil" Kirk, Shatner gets extra red light on him in those shots as well (which would push his shirt color toward brown I think).

Note how the green Wrap contrasts with the standard Command color.

The first season has a few amusing uniform malfunctions. In the teaser and part of the first act of "Enemy Within," Shatner appears with no Starfleet emblem at all.

Shatner also wears the wrap in "Charlie X". In this sequence, he gets IN the turbolift wearing his standard uniform, goes DIRECTLY to the Bridge, and emerges wearing the wrap. :lol

As always, great caps, Karl. :D

Notice that the guy running the helm in this shot is wearing a re-used shirt from "The Cage" with the added black collar...Looks like those are the same gray pants they used in The Cage too.

EW_kirkwrap03.jpg

Looks like the navigator's wearing a Cage shirt, but with the regular series braid in addition to the black collar. Even the red shirt in the background seems to be wearing the gray pants and crappy boots from The Cage. It seems like they re-used a lot of the pilot uniforms in the early episodes. Probably no time or money to remake uniforms for the non-stars.

EW_kirkwrap06.jpg

Look how thick (and close together) Kirk's braid is in this shot. It's definately different (and a lot more like the Rodd.com/Katarra) braid than the version most people make.

As always, how it is that you spot those "Cage" shirts with such certainty, is beyond me. :lol

I thought the Cage shirts had split sleeves at the wrist... :confused

Anyhoo, back to Kirk's tight-ass braid... he's all wound up, no wonder he wants a vacation with "no braid on my shoulder"... :lol

Shatner's rank braid is pretty tightly bunched up for most of the first season. Could be that the correct spacing was intended to be looser but the shrinkage of the velour kept driving it together (they're SUPPOSED to have removed the braid and insignia before cleaning the costumes, but who knows)...

Corbomite Maneuver (first regular episode)

Dagger of the Mind (braid seems THINNER in this one but still pretty tightly spaced)

:lol It's not too tough, really. The shirts from The Cage have sleeve seams like a typical shirt or sweater (and a zipper on top of the shoulder) which give a more angular appearance than the seams of the standard TOS tunics.

As for the notched cuffs, it's possible they could have simply opened up the seam and sewn them shut.

The spacing on the braid seemed to loosen up after the first season, and I agree it's probably the shrinking velour making them bunch up in the first place. I remember reading the insignia patches came off every day for dry cleaning the shirts, but I can't remember if the braid was too, so it's possible they didn't.

A small clothing/braid goof exists in Amok Time. Kirk comes to Vulcan wearing a normally fitting uniform top, but as soon as they cut to Kirk getting the giant slash across his chest his shirt is obviously tighter and the braid is really bunched up like a first season tunic. It seems like they chose an old ill-fitting shirt to cut up for that episode. :p

Speaking of wraps, let's not forget the one Charlie gets to wear. :p

I wanna stay. Stay. Stay. Stay...

I was told that the braid and Insignia was pulled off nightly when they cleaned the Tunics.

Looks like some did not make it. :lol

so what is the general thought on the gold color ? i know its an individual thing, and the screen used ones seems to change color... as far as the velour tunics go -- more of a "hard gold" (right photo) or a softer gold (left photo) ???

dave

The real key to understanding what gold (or any other color) you want is lighting.

If you want to replicate the ACTUAL color as opposed to the photographed color, then you need to know the exact lighting conditions.

Any lighting experts .? :D
