Terrain Molding: Box Molds

I think that I am in the right place. I am just showing a couple simple box molds that I am doing for some local Warhammer 40,000 tournaments we have going on. These pieces are original sculpts of our own, and not recasts of copyrighted pieces.

Enjoy and Comment.

MATERIAL:
Smooth-On, Mold Star 15
Cardboard
Hot Glue & Gun

Gloves
Stir Sticks
Mixing Cups

Mold making is simple and easy. It allows you to keep from wasting so much time over and over doing the same thing.

I use cardboard all the time, its cheap and easy to work with. I use it as a base to place my piece I am molding, on top of. You have to put a thin line of hot glue on the bottom of your piece, to keep silicone or urethane rubber from seeping underneath.

Make sure to hot glue all gaps, corners, flats, and connecting pieces very heavily, so that you do not have any leakage (you might have leakage your first time). Taping the tops do help from time to time.

Using the mixing cups, make sure that you pour equal parts (unless your product says differently) and then mix them into one, separate from the two you used to measure.

When pour material to create the mold, please do remember to pour slowly, not dumping, and to stay in the same spot, so that you are not creating trapped air.

Generally, I try and least a 1/4 inch around my object i am molding, and I try and make it at least 1/4 inch deep. This will change from piece to piece. Taller objects are harder to remove from molds with thick mold walls, and big pieces have a hard time keeping their shape with thin walls. Experience (messing up plenty) will teach you as you go along.

Wait for the demold time your materials demands, and then unwrap your new mold!
