Supernatural - Creating John Winchester's Journal

I have started a fun project to re-create John Winchester's (Supernatural) journal. I will start with creating those pages that I can as accurately as possible as well as some of the photos and newspaper clippings etc.

I also will create some "unseen" pages of my own design. Then, I will tackle the actual journal itself.

Below are my first trial pages. I know there are other great journal replicas available, this is my take. I started by re-creating the blank journal pages from scratch in Adobe Illustrator, doing research to get the correct dates and layout based on screen grabs. Then I added the hand written text and demon artwork in Photoshop. I haven't punched holes in them yet as I will wait on that until I have the journal made.

I have used screen grabs and this website for reference: John's Journal (decoding) - Super-wiki

All comments and suggestions are welcome. :)

Looking good!

I'd love to see one of these completed from start to finish, mostly so I can try it myself lol. My wife and I want a journal for our collection but haven't dared to try and track it all down yet.

That's pretty sweet work! Did you make and print the journal pages themselves or did you use an off the shelf set?

I made them from start to finish. I'm a graphic artist so I was able to (by studying screen grabs), create the calendar pages from scratch. I then used Photoshop to add the demons. I hand printed the text and added some "grunge" for texture as it seems unlikely that the pages would be nice and white at this point.

I created the pages in Adobe Illustrator and then used Photoshop for the rest. It is quite labor intensive to make each calendar spread but I think it is worth it.

Also, I got great insight from another board member who sells journals http://www.therpf.com/f13/screen-accurate-supernatural-journal-147671/

Here is one of the the blank pages I created:

That looks great. ive always wondered how you guys do these props. So its a combo of screen grabs and hand drawing. Same amount of work that goes into sculpting or painting it seems. Really great prop, would love to have one.

Actually, what I do is use the screen grabs for reference only. I then use a graphic design program, Adobe Illustrator, to create the journal pages (as if they were to be professionally printed). I then add the artwork, hand printing and "grunge" in Photoshop and print them.

Here is a "unseen" original double page spread of my own creation. It is the first week of January, 1989. Keeping in style with actual journal pages. Created in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

If you guys caught the last episode on the CW it was his dads Henry's journal

Yes, but as they explained in the episode, he ordered it, but it arrived after his (future) death so he never used it. All the entries and ephemera are John's so I feel comfortable calling it "John's journal".

As I assume Sam and Dean have added their own information over the years, I'm going to make some of their pages as well in the future.

:)

This is outstanding work my friend, BZ.

Any chance you'd be willing to let that blank calendar document out so other fans can then start developing their own journal pages?

I'm kind of torn about that. :confused

It is very, very labour intensive to create each set of pages. The project started as a mother/daughter thing because my daughter has been ill and it is a fun way to cheer her up. We are both big fans of the show and Dean.

I mean the file of the blank calendar, so we can print blank pages and do the writing and artwork in ourselves. If not, no big deal.

Since they all have different dates (52 weeks), each blank double page spread is unique. I make each one separately for authenticity.
