Supernatural Colt found!

Actually, the prop gun is 9".

A friend of mine got to talk to one of the prop guys from the show and they have been talking shop about the colt :)

Things I have learned -
1: It's REALLY fragile.
2: There is only one, no backups in case it breaks.
3: It has broken a few times, apparently this gun is a royal pain in the ass.
4: 9" barrel.
5: It was originally chambered in .36 but they use .38 bp blanks in it. They never dry fire it because of the way the hammer smacks the cylinder.
6: Holy **** this gun is expensive.

The last time it managed to break during shooting was when they were going to shoot Lucifer. The spring broke after a few shots, so they had to use tv magic to get the rest of the shots needed. They did manage to get the hammer back though, so it worked out well in the end :)

yup...def. a 9" bar. :thumbsup I've owned several of those old cap and ball style guns..pain in the butt sometimes. Owned a few walkers and Dragoons even an old army..but never a patterson....can't wait to see a finished replica someday.

That's fantastic news, I'm really interested in one of those resin castings. However, I'm not sure that it'd make it through customs here in Aus. I'd say that this is possibly one of the best project around.

I'm certain that the barrel length on the pietta reproduction is correct and that the screen used original was 7 1/2" barrel rather than the 9". Above shows the difference between the colt models and shows that there are a few subtle variations. Hope this helps you out on your build. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Great topic guys, I am definitely interested in a run, would love to have one in my collection! Count me in!

TOTALLY AGREE - 7 1/2 Barrel has to be right. The Nine inch barrel is longer than Dean's leg !! (Sorry Dean) :eek

Just an update: I am currently working with modeling putty to lengthen the barrel of the Colt Navy revolver to the full 9" that the original Paterson had. I have my trusty Dremel and have been shaving down and shaping the body and will try to have some nice photos of the WIP soon. :)

EDIT!!!!!!: Well, luck has just changed on me. I actually FOUND a Pietta for sale and have bought it. XD Color me thrilled. I will be talking to my friend Kristi, who does a lot of 3-D work and mold casting, about what steps I need to take from here to make a casting of it in resin. Afterall, I'm paying an arm and a leg for this thing so I don't want to carve up the original. I'll be casting a resin version and then carving in the etched details with my dremel.

Question for all you who know more than me though...I have read two different things about the barrel length. There's some saying it's 9" and some who say 7 1/2". The gun I just bought is 7 1/2" which is normal for the Pietta replicas from what I understand and from the screenshots I've seen it looks like they were using a replica that had the 7 1/2" barrel. Can someone tell me if I'm wrong on that? If it IS supposed to be 9", I want to stay true to what's in the show and would have to build out an extra 2 inches to the resin casting. Not a HUGE deal but if I can avoid it that's even better. Also, I'm thinking about trying to cast the resin one in pieces so that I can have a working cosplay version.

Looks like you won't have to extend the barrel afterall. I'm definately in for a resin casting, depending on if its possible to ship to Australia. Looking forward to hearing any news about this project. This'll go perfect with my other Supernatural replicas.

I found a Replica prop website with screen caps od the details of the colt.

Attached are some of the pics of the colt:

Can't wait to see this project! :love

I asked Dean to show me the colt - obviously he got confused and pulled out Ruby's knife. Thanks Dean. . . .

Sometimes it DOES take more than a GED and a "give'm hell" attitude ... sorry Dean. :lol

Nice find Harda357. By the looks of it the barrel is the 7 1/2" after all.

Otterling, how's the project going I'd love to see some pics of the progress if there's any. This is by far the best prop project around.

Actually the barrel is the 9" version. Pederlosi (also known as Pietta/Uberti) made the deluxe patterson replica, and they only make it in the 9" barrel. After talking with some reps at the company, the deluxe has only been made in the 9" in the past. (If you want one nowadays, you either go secondary market or be put on a year's waiting list with a 50% deposit :eek )

As mentioned above, my friend got to talk to the guy who made the gun's rebuilt cylinder for the show, and he verified the maker and length. Can't really beat that for a source of information ;)

I have an interest thread in the JY with some unboxing pics of the basic pietta version on a cutting board if you wanna check em out. Dunno if other makers have made a longer barrel, but I do know colt offered a 7.5" version shortly after it's release and it's commonly referred to as a "Baby Patterson" or a "Pocket Patterson", cause it's a lot easier to carry. Later models starting with the 1839 had a loading lever attached to make reloading a lot easier as well, and it was an option to send your pistol to a colt company to add that on for you.

Someone might have made a version of those shorter barrels, but it wasn't Uberti/Pietta/Pedersoli , and they are the makers of the deluxe used in the show.

Fun fact, after almost 6 years on air, they still have just that one hero pistol, which tends to break fairly often. It's one of the reasons it has been sort of written out of the show as a plot weapon. It's a little too "deus ex machina" when it can kill anything, but also it is a giant pain in the ass to use for more than a few takes :lol

Found these photos of Dean holding "THE COLT" and has you can see this is a VERY LARGE barrel on this weapon which makes it a 9 1/2 inches long. The barrel is measured from the end of the cylinder where the barrel actually starts to the end where the bullet comes out. Just incase anyone was confused on this. :lol

OH YEAH, I forgot to mention in my last post but the rings on the barrel are NOT gold at least on Dean & Sam's Colt. The Rings on the boy's Colt are SILVER. Just incase anyone was wanting to know.

The little nubbin sight at the end of the barrel is gold :love

The metal highlights on the gun (small bar near the start of the barrel, 2 rings on the end of the barrel, and the ones on the cylinder) are all silver though.

Also, another nifty detail that might have been missed. There are pentagrams on both sides of the grip. That kinda surprised me.

Me too! I was kinda hoping someone was still working on kitting this out to folks. It'd be one helluva awesome Supernatural prop to behold, imho.

HOW close are we getting to casting the colt? :love

Just asking?

Thanks, ... my wife loves the show. THIS is the one prop she is interested in ... out of all my collection - SHE wants what I don't have.

Thanks,

Gordon

Think I found one of these at an antique mall-- It was a black powder version tho-- but Im sure it was made by Pietta--

I can call them and find out if anyone thinks that it may be the right one---

It's more than likely the same type I picked up for the run. There are 2 diff versions of the pietta, the one that's engraved and the one that isn't. The one that isn't engraved is just a black color, the engraved one is a two tone and runs about 1500$.

Both are black powder pistols though. The show built a new cylinder and altered the hammer a bit to use with .38 size blanks.

Chris

Re: Supernatural Colt found?

The engravings and the other details look VERY similar to me...:)
The only things missing are the pentacle on the grips and the text "non timeba mala" on the barrel;)

It's "non timebo mala"-- would hate to see someone else get it wrong on their actual prop.
