Super Mario Bros. movie

Too much pop music, not enough Luigi, but otherwise pretty fun. Far and away Illumination’s best film (which is a very low bar to clear, but still). They picked all of Chris Pratt’s worst line reads for the trailers because he ended up being totally fine in the film. Jack Black of course stole the show, though.

(Side note: everyone not from Nintendo games outside of the Mario extended family looked like a nightmare, like a cursed Mii, very glad the movie didn’t linger in the “real world”. Illumination is not good at character design, which again, is why this is their best film because 99% of the characters they couldn’t screw up due to being designed by much more talented people.)

Won’t see it in the theatre but Amazon already has preorders for the blu ray and dvd up, so I have it ordered.
Looks like we’re going to be getting a Nintendo cinematic universe with the unexpected and overwhelming success of the opening weekend. Long overdue for Disney to step aside for someone that cares about pleasing the fans and not the critics.

$400 million worldwide already. Holy. Heck.

That is a lot, but at the same time, given that its Mario Bros, In a way, not surprised.
The biggest issue with the 93 movie, besides not being a good movie anyways, is that it came out when a good part of that fan base was still too young to go see on their own, therefore having to beg a parent to take them. So any parent back then that read a review, saw how dark it looked from trailers, and then word of mouth at the badness, probably didn't want to waste their money seeing it with the kids.
Now, 30 years later, that original fan base are adults, plus all the new young fans. Making it cutesy CG helps with parents who might not be Mario fans be alright to take the family anyways.
Nintendo waiting all this time really paid off on their end for sure.
They probably waited to see how the Sonic movie did before truly going forth with it.
I think this is good for any future video game movies to just make a good fun movie, and not have to explain every single thing and why, to waste time.
I read they had THOUGHT to give a reason why bricks float, but realized, who cares, it doesn't really help the story anyways.
