STTMP Admiral Kirk uniform

Looking for someone that makes the Admiral Kirk uniform shown in the opening scenes of Star Trek the Motion Picture. Looking for a better then average uniform

Thanks

All you have to do is go to the women's section of any store, get some pastel pajamas, slap a bib over it, and wear a big honkin' 70s belt buckle. ;)

In all seriousness though, I can think of only one person that may sell them, but from what I hear from other board members is that he's a very very unreliable seller. I have seen people selling patterns though. Seems a fairly easy style to run through a sewing machine, though the piping could be a little more difficult.

Try some google searches for star trek uniform patterns.

The later ones that kirk wore do not look as hard (the one color ones) but the ADM one he wore in the start looks a bit tougher.

Good luck with this project.

Depending on how much you want to spend there are STTMP original uniforms for sale on eBay at the moment (and should be for a while).

The Admirals uniform was a striking costume - in my opinion much better than the mono-coloured others. If necessary you could take one to a seamstress to provide a template.

This would be (along with the security uniform) the only STTMP uniform I would be interested in.

I found someone that can make it I just have to find the belt buckle now.

Any luck discovering what color boots to use? I've been trying to find a good picture of Kirk's boots to no avail. Black or Blue (or green)/gray, no idea.

Feels like I've been researching this costume forever. As someone already mentioned its only onscreen for minutes but its the defining outfit of the movie. In response to some of the queries firstly regarding the colour, its most often referred to as 'loden green' but, like the Reeve Superman costume is a different colour in person. Anybody thinking its blue/grey should watch the scene where Kirk comes up the escalator with Sonak and see the contrast. From what I can gather the Admiral uniform had stirrup style trousers worn over patent green boots unlike the all-in-ones Fletcher designed for the rest of the uniforms. If anybody needs decent pics of any aspect of the costume I may have it so feel free to ask - One thing that still eludes me is a good refernce for the star designs on the shoulder boards, however...

Martin-El, I absolutely could use those pictures of his pant cuff/boots if you have them. Best guess is that they're the short, zippered boot much like those used in ST:II, but colored similarly to the pant. I'll be hard pressed figuring out how to dye them that color as I have not one clue how to begin.
As for the shoulder rank, the best I've been able to discern is that it's an 8-pointed star, raised in the center as depicted on the picture I'm including here. It's, sadly, just a best guess.

So hardly the best reference but the basic boot/stirrup setup is visible here;

Where it does indeed appear that Shatner's ankle boot tops are enclosed with an arch cut into the pant and the length drawn down in the back from the stirrup around the heel. Similar in construction to the crew's boots but without being stuck together as one.
While I'm here, this is the best reference I've seen of the Admiral Stars - these are replicas so won't trust it 100% until I've seen the genuine costume up close, however...

And one more thing - I have yet to see anybody get the shapes of the Ivory bib correct. The front may be familiar...

But the back was an entirely different shape -

Anyways - Let me know if there's anything else - and Happy 34th Anniversary to Star Trek - The Motion Picture..!

Thanks Martin-El, I'll pass those along to MurrayMousie, who's doing my uniform for me (I can't sew, sadly) to incorporate if it's not too late!

She uses a metal star for the rank, but it's like a 5-pointer and I think what you have here is more accurate!

Thanks again

Well, I got my uniform and it looks pretty darned good. Still at a loss for boots. I also didn't do the stirrup pant as I imagine it would be a wear and tear nightmare, but Murraymousie did give me extra material in case I want to incorporate it. Also she re-did the uniform rank and it looks pretty good, ask and you shall receive to see it.

I'm still at a complete loss as to how to handle the boots and am open to good suggestions on what's appropriate and how to get them. Until I know more, I'll just use my TOS boots for the time being.

Thanks for all the help!

Congrats, your uniform looks great -
Even if you're not attempting the stirrup finish on the pant I still recommend side-zippered ankle boots. I'm not 100% sure what paint it is but over there you apparently have something that sprays over leather. Match it up close as you can with your uniform colour and away you go...

Martin,
I've looked into the spray a bit, though I can't say I found anything really close on the colors. I am also concerned about the zipper, while I could mask it off, it'd stand out as black on the boot, as they're never very well concealed on the boot itself. Also finding a boot I'm prepared to risk ruining for a decent price in my size (US 13 2E or preferably 4E) hasn't been a fruitful search. I'm hoping someone here has some additional ideas to consider. I'm hoping nobody will get too bent out of shape on my black boots if I have to resort to it.

On a somewhat related topic, do you know a source for the wrist communicator? I imagine I can live without it at ECCC, but it'd be nice to have as it doesn't make a lot of sense for me to carry my TMP phaser with me as it's a dress uniform.

Thanks!!

Jim

In the past Ive had good luck using Krylon spray paints on leather. Since they have a big colour selection you might find something close. As for the zipper, I wouldnt be too concerned about it since its covered by your pant leg anyways.
