Stormtrooper vs Sandtrooper helmets: what's the difference?

I've got a TE kit that I don't really want so I thought I'd turn it into a sandtrooper bucket with little bits of real sand in the crevices. I know the biggest difference in the two being the amount of dirt and carbon scoring, but are there physical differences as well? (before you ask, yes I tried to do a search but my laptop started smoking with all the stormtrooper threads it pulled up :lol)
So can anyone help guide me, maybe with a few pics to your "ideal" Sandtrooper helmet? ANY help whatsoever would be appreciated.

There are no bars in the "decal" areas on the sandtrooper and the brow trim may be positioned higher. But I'm sure others can give a better explanation on the differences.

in general - thats it I think
they were variants on the ANH stunt lid build up

Jez's site probable has the most comprehensive info in one place for this Original ANH Stunt Stormtrooper Helmets

Sandtrooper helmets - known as the "Move Along", "stop that ship" helmets

ANH stunt stormies - aka "Set for Stun" and "Dave M"

soz if you already knew this - dont mean to teach grand dad to suck eggs ;P

Here is the crl from the MEPD.

* Frown is painted gray and does not leave the teeth area. Eight total teeth on the frown cut out.
* Traps and tears are gray.
* No vertical black lines in any traps or tears.
* Medium blue tube stripes, matching what was used on screen – navy blue and black are not acceptable – numbering between 9 and 15 per side (there does not need to be an equal amount per side). The curve bends backwards.
* Lenses are flat green or smoke. They are dark enough that viewers cannot see the eyes behind them.
* Chin vocoder is painted black.
* The ears have four raised bumps, painted gray in color with a black outline. One or more bumps may be painted black.
* Two aerators (a.k.a. “microphone tips”) are present.

* Lenses are flat green or smoke. They are dark enough that viewers cannot see the eyes behind them.

All the screen used helmets had flat green lenses no smoked lenses, i presume that is just what mepd accept for costuming as some people complain green lenses hurt their eyes.

The bare minimum is the flat smoke or green lenses. I imagine trooping is easier with the smoke lenses. They highly recommend flat green only as spec'd in the helmet mods section of the CRL.

27.Helmet Mods:
  • Correct ‘hovi mic’ aerator tips.
  • Lenses should be flat green only.
  • Ears should have three screws used per side, one above and below the ear bump and one at the base of the helmet.
  • Ears should have four bumps only, not three.

The only differences between TK and TD helmets are in how they are painted (ie paint schemes). The lenses are the same, dark green. I don't believe there are any physical/ shape differences. However, there are quite a few differences between TK armor and Sandtrooper armor.

Physical shape, both are nearly identical. The only real differences are how many teeth are cut out and the number of screws used on the ear pieces. "Hero" helmets had 6 teeth cut out and 2 screws per ear piece. The stunt and sandy helmets had 8 teeth cut out and 3 screws per ear piece. I think the TE kit has the 4 bumps on the ear piece but I'm not sure. I only have an AP kit.

All of those points are right on...I've attached a few pics of my Sandy bucket so that you could have a visual reference to what they're talking about. Mine is an AP helmet. It is a stunt helmet with the raised eye frame and bumpy cap. Good luck with your build, bro! :thumbsup

Guys, thank you so much. You've all provided very valuable information. I think I have what I need. I consider myself edumacated.

Nothing to a sane person. ;)

GASP! How dare you, sir!

While there have been some good comments here, these have only touched the surface of the differences.

First, the sandtrooper helmets have deep recesses around the tusk area that was later filled in because when you are making a big budget movie like Star Wars, you really pay attention to things like that.

Second, the triangle cut out under the chin... totally different. One is isosceles while the other is... slightly less isosceles. Don't make me break out the comparison pics, because you know I will. The later helmets had one additional swipe of the file on the left side... THEIR left not yours! If you add that extra file swipe to a sandtrooper helmet... well, buddy, we might TELL you good job, but secretly we will all be laughing at your ignorance.

Finally, the sandtrooper helmets are clearly one color while the later helmets were two-toned with gunmetal, and don't even get me started about the C scratch on the cheek... it is a paint bubble alright! Jeez! Get it straight!
