Storm Trooper mic tips..anyone making them??

Have you tried Keith? I've bought a couple of sets from him in the past, they are spot on.

He took measurements from an SDS tip and machined a master i have some of Keiths aswell and there is a noticable difference which i found strange as we know the source of Keiths is an original mic tip and yet AA says on his site that his tips are a cast of a Hovi mix aswell which either means there were 2 kinds of Hovi tips or it's one of AA's stories that isn't completely correct.

Hi,

Sorry to go off topic a bit as I know this thread is about who is making mic tips.

I can see Keith's excellent new mic tip has the interior detail but does it have the correct cut out steps at the base of the mic tip?

Here is a pic of a casting taken from an original mic tip side on to show what I mean. Sorry about the quality of the pic these things are quite hard to photograph (especially with a flash). You can see the step best on the top half of the photo. Also there are four posts (best I can describe them) in the cut out groove in the same positions as the four fins on the outer edge of the mic tip.

The mic tip shown is taken from a screen used helmet in a private collection by a friend mid nineties. The picture does not do the cast taken any justice at all due to my poor photographt skills. Edit - It also has photoshopping to remove flash haze to emphasize the inner ring and cut out.

Also another question does anybody know if Master Replicas helmets have the nipple interior and stepped cut out edge?

Cheers Chris.

It looks to me like the original, whatever the actual part may be, was coming apart on the above pictured Hovi or just glued together another way.

Keith, was your master off the real part or a real resin part?

Was the one above off a real part or a real resin part?

The above mic tip isn't coming apart that is what they are like. My terrible picture was only meant to highlight the step in the cut out. The four posts are most definitely meant to be like this. I have seen examples of other screen mic tips which are the same as this.

This one pictured above was cast from an original 'Hovi Mix Pa 2' part not a resin casting which were also used on some of the original screen helmets (I believe).

I will try to get a better pic to show what I mean.

Cheers Chris.

I only have Keiths old style tips the step is kind of there its nowhere near as definite as that its more like just a groove you'd get running a stylus through some clay or something no defined square edges or anything no sign of those posts either.
Still the best tips i've managed to find though i'll be wanting some of the new ones for the next lid i build :D
That casting looks ultra crisp though Chris but i'm betting copies aren't available ?

To the best of my knowledge I believe the origin story goes that Keith's are cast from a master provided by TE that originates from the real deal...

I will leave it at that and let Keith clarify the details...

voice in the crowd that "cut out" looks strange almost forced in a way like it was literally cut out... While the rest of the part has soft rolled features that cut out looks out of place as it's damn sharp... Not doubting the origins just making a comment...

Hi exoray,

You are 100% correct the cut out is forced. The image posted is photoshopped to show the inner ring on the mic tip. I cannot get a good picture of the mic tip as it is night time just now and my camera is crap with the flash and I am a crap photographer (probably the real reason).
To the eye the edges are crisp and sharp it is a definite straight up and down without a rounded edge on the inner ring. The photos I took all suffer from flash hazing so I tried to remove it. I wasn't trying to be misleading just trying to emphasise the point about the cut out. Nothing sinister going on honest :lol

I was only trying to show there was a cut out and that also there was a step in on the mic tip with a thinner ring on them.

Here is my original image which doesn't really portray what it looks like in the flesh as the edges on both top and bottom appear to curve out to the base when in fact they are straight up and down.

The edges look to rounded compared to the piece in hand.

I have also had a look at some higher res pics of the LFL hero helmet, stop that ship and move along. It is so hard to show and even worse as these are painted black but you can definitely see there is a bigger cut out on the screen helmets as opposed to previously seen fan made mic tips.

Stop that ship.

I know these pics aren't conclusive but I think I can see the inner ring and bigger gap on these.

The stop that ship shot taken from the side angle also clearly shows missing paint on the bigger image which shows the depth of the cut out a bit better.

If anybody has any good pics of the helmet owned by Propstore of London it shows it the best as it has no paint on the mic tips.

Edit - I also noticed that the four fins on the side of the screen used mic tips and the one I photographed go right down to where the cut out is. On the fan made ones they do not there is a gap on fan made ones before the cut out.

By the way I have looked back over the thread this isn't a bash at Keith or any fan made mic tips. I am just wondering if Keith's new version have these features and if MR also have any of these features.

Oh also Defstartrooper copies are not available for a few reasons not anything elitist or not wanting to share - first reason is I like Keith and his mic tips are awesome so don't want to tread on his toes. Second reason is the casting I have was given to me by a friend and would not want to profit from his work. Third is I don't make props I don't have the time and certainly don't have the talent :) Sorry mate.

Cheers Chris.
