Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - 5/31 update

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Flowable Putty VIDEO

Thanks for all the kind words!

I'm sorry for the delay in updates. I caught a bug on Saturday and have been in bed the last two days. I'm feeling a bit better today and will be heading back to work tomorrow.

I'm about ready to cut the faceplate out, so I'm preparing another paper pep of the helmet (at least from the brow back over the dome). My plan is to use this partial pep as a template for not only the faceplate cut-lines, but also the grooves that run over and around the dome of the helmet. By using the pep template, I can make sure both left and right sides are symetrical... Or at least more symetrical than I could get by eye-balling it. lol

I'll post more after I get back into the swing of thing!

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Flowable Putty VIDEO

Hope you are feeling better!:sick
Now get back to work LOL! You have an eager audience waiting to see this build continued!!:lol
This is turning out so amazing I cant wait to see how this turns out!
Are you going to mech the face plate? It would be so cool to do a clockwork looking mechanism, probably not feasible? Have you any ideas for the rest of the armor?

I haven't stated (publicly) what I'd LIKE to see in the way of electronics for this helmet. I've stayed away from that primarily to avoid over-promising and under-delivering.... But between Digitizit and I, we have been talking (off-line) about several different 'automations' that would be VERY cool to execute.

As I said early on, one of the most interesting aspects of this build for me are the bits of detail I could work into the design. So, I'll say this: "It is my personal goal to have some of the helmet's 'detail bits' automated, including aspects of the faceplate opening and closing."

... but I think that's all I can say reliably at this point. It's just too early yet to know what all we can pull off. :unsure

As for the rest of the suit, I think it would be a dream project! But that's a devotion of time and energy (and someone's money) that I can't currently commit to. Anyway... I think I'll have my hands full with just the helmet for the near future. :):thumbsup

Well, I am going to try and finish the whole suit. I may need everyone's help to guilt Indie into helping me. :lol

I've ordered the materials to do a proper body cast. I'm going to start with the hands and work my way up. If it goes well, I'll keep plugging away.

If you're up for financing it - I'm up for building it. :love

...I was really just trying to temper expectations. :$

Well, yeah! Go big or go home, right?

Clearly we need to work on our communication skills. :facepalm

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Marking for Faceplate Cut

FINALLY!!! Feeling better and back into the swing of things! :):thumbsup

So, I pepped half of the helmet so I can use that to transfer the lines I'll draw on one side reliably to the other (since I suck at doing that by sight only). These lines will be used to both cut out the faceplate and to cut the detail lines into the top of the helmet - so they're pretty important.

After blowing up reference pictures as big as I could, looking at all angles provided by the artwork and struggling to match angles with the physically 'real' helmet here is what I've come up with...

And here is a good shot of where the faceplate will be separated:

First off, let me point out that the artwork is awesome (but also not realistic). Side and front views don't match up (even to themselves). So I tended to go with what the main (front-view) drawing showed in those cases. But I also picked some aspects from the side-view sketch that I tried to include.

So, that being said.... what do you think?! :confused

I liiiiiiiike it. you two should mold and cast a few of these to fund the suit.

Lookin' great so far your th' man /w/ th' master plan!!!!:cool:lol:)

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Marking for Faceplate Cut

You know that wouldnt be a bad idea! This is a one of a kind and building the whole suit would be deluxe especially if you can have the hardware for the helmet sides to go with it.. I think the interest would be there brother.

We have, quite casually, talked about that. It wouldn't take much to do. I think we're both just focusing on getting through this initial helmet build. :lol Considering neither of us have offered something like this for sale, what would you expect to pay?

Actually, another vitally important question would be WHEN to cast it...

I say this because we're definitely planning on have a LOT of detail in the cheek space (right now just a smooth area). That space will be cut up, deepened and filled with lots of mechanical details that just won't be conducive to straight-up simple casting.

So, do we cast the thing before that (with no fine details), or do we try to cast all the little detail pieces separately?

Basically... I'm just not sure if folks would want a fairly 'blank canvas' or a much more elaborate (and costly) set of pieces that would require a lot more work to assemble. :unsure

I would say cast it blank and either cast the bits and pieces that we put on it as well, or let people do their own thing with the sides. Of course, that depends on what WE do with the sides. But once it's to a casting point, I say let's do it!

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Marking for Faceplate Cut

I agree with Digitizit, I would much rather buy a simple cast I can modify myself, because once you get into fine details you will have to pressure cast so there are no bubbles. I say a simple 2 piece design(main helmet and faceplate) and that should sell fairly well at $180-200. again no details = less expensive to cast and less material to use.

Simply amazing work as always Jon! Can you email me? I have a few Q's regarding this new putty your using. :)

this is very cool, nice work so far

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Marking for Faceplate Cut

Your helmet looks more Bad ass than the art work. Looks great. Good luck with the cuts.

Re: Steampunk Ironman Helmet WIP - Marking for Faceplate Cut

The thing looks very cool! Even without the details. I wanna see the seperate things! Awesome!
