Starting an Ash Ketchum costume for my son

No pictures yet. This is my first attempt at putting together a costume. It's going to be the original ash. I have a friend who is making the shirt for me. I've ordered the hat and gloves from etsy. From Amazon I've ordered a green backpack, a pokeball, and a belt. I'll have to put the orange stripe on the backpack and paint the belt buckle. I also ordered a one gallon plastic round fish tank to be used as a candy bucket for Halloween. It will be painted as a pokeball.

I believe I have everything covered but the shoes. I've read some about painting/dying shoes, but I haven't been able to find a pair that I like. Preferably something with smooth sides. Any recommendations on that would be appreciated.

Awesome. You're a great dad.

I remember posting here, back before 2001, asking about replicas of Ash's hat... What a long, strange trip it's been.

I've been told by other dads that I'm making them look bad. My son has quite a few nerf guns, so I framed and painted 3 different 2x4 sheets of pegboard with nerf logos. One has the regular logo, one has the nerf zombie logo, and the last one has the mega logo. It's great to watch other kids come over and and see their jaws hit the floor when they walk into his room. I'm currently working on a pegboard to hold game controllers. It's going to be painted as an original NES controller.

Most important question: This is going to be the 'original Ash,' by which I assume you mean the first episode of the first season of the TV series?

If so, his sneakers look to be high-top, lace-up, basketball-style sneakers. Depending on how much painting or modding you want to do, a 'blank' pair of Converse Chuck Taylor-style sneakers might fit the bill. They're not exactly the same shape, but they're close, and they should be relatively cheap if you get a no-name / knock-off pair.

I recommend just using craft foam to cover an existing pair of shoes since the design is so simple. You could use some old shoes he's previously destroyed, or maybe a new pair of super cheap shoes like slip-ons, or even flip flops.

Of course it goes quicker just buy a pair of similar looking shoes. I bought the gloves and a hat on eBay and that saved a lot of time. Good luck.
