Stargate Worlds "Heavy Jaffa" warrior costume build

It's that time of year again. I've already started but haven't been posting pictures and there's LOTS of chainmaille to make but I'm still not sure if I can make it all. This character is based on the artwork by Jon Troy 'Hazardous' Nickel for the cancelled Stargate Worlds MMO game. It's not your typical Jaffa and I've always had a thing for Egyptian art so it seemed like the perfect new project. Plus there's lots of other Stargate cosplayers out there so I can be a part of yet different from them.

And I get some glowy bits too! YAY LEDS!

So chainmaille. It sucks to make this stuff and it's going to be way heavy. A 4-5" by 12" piece is just about one pound, ugh.

It starts on the left by making the sub ring sets, four rings looped in a fifth.

Then you start weaving

And MORE weaving.

(This is going to take forever.)

I've also been experimenting with making the aqua colored crystals, just round ones for now as a test of the concept.

It starts with iridescent flakes, crystals, clear resin, and plastic ornaments. Eventually I'll vacuform the shells in the shapes they need to be in from the drawing.

Next you drop the crystals into the ornament shell, add a few flakes, cover in resin, add a few more flakes, and repeat.

Will you be creating pep files for the armor parts or scratch building?

Scratch building. I might have to use Pep for the Ma'Tok staff but going to try to scratch build that too. Speaking of which, I have a preliminary staff tip opening mechanism in the works too. Seriously going to try to pattern out the helmet this weekend (hopefully).

Made the crystals with a blue acrylic crystal called "Dazzlers", they are more uniform in size and already blue. They're in the floral department of Hobby Lobby.

Sorry for the very long time between updates. I've been twisting metal rings like crazy but of course January was a busy month at work so I only have one arm sorta done. It weighs about 4.5lbs and I should probably start working out now just to wear this. I think I need to taper it down by my wrist too. So almost one done and one arm to go and then both legs. Ugh.

Fantastic work on the opening mechanism of the staff weapon. Can you post a link to the linear actuator you mentioned in the video?

Thanks!

Ugh. Spent the day, on and off between movies, weaving together the sides of the chainmaille sleeve. I'm having a heck of a time getting rid of the puckers on the bottom where it comes together. Hopefully I can resolve this. I think a difference of four rings is too much. :-/
