Stargate Ribbon Device

Hi everyone, I'm a newby on the forum so I hope this is in the right place etc, I thought you guys might like to see what I've been woking on lately...

I was asked a few weeks ago to make a "working" replica of the Ribbon/Hand Device from Stargate SG1.

The prop is made from solid Brass, with the exception of the two crystals which are both pieces of acrylic that have been carved into shape. The LED in the middle of the palm crystal is activated when the hand is opened fully, and the palm touches a switch on the back of the unit.

There is also a seperate little sound unit which is a set of travel speakers and a cheap MP3 player which you an activate to make the ribbon sound.

Here are few shots, please take a look at my site for more photos. I may try to put some WIP shots up too if anyone's interested,

Cheers

Pete

Looks great!

what did you use for the "wires" that go from the fingers to the palm center?
The original used springs, but yours looks the part.

Hey, thanks guys!

Yes you can open and close your hand when wearing it, it's not very comfortable though!

The "wires" are springs, they have a very tight coil, it took me along time to source them! I'll try to put a close up of the palm on the original post so you can see them a little better.

Cheers

Nice work on that! I think you may have contacted me about pictures of my screen-used one, but I forgot to respond... Sorry about that... :rolleyes

I like the idea of it coming on just from opening your hand, that's pretty cool.

I guess it doesn't matter now, but the springs were purchased from McMaster-Carr for the screen-used ones. They have a 'cut-to-length' spring section, I think it's just a matter of getting the size right. There's also an elastic 'string' inside the spring (I guess to give it more tension or to help prevent stretching the springs). Probably not necessary for yours, but just in case anyone wanted to know...

Wow, that looks really awesome. Wish I had the talent to make once, since my fiance costumes Hathor with me as her DDJ.

My first thought on the springs was always guitar strings, but it's interesting to know they were really springs with a corded center.

Incredible work! Esp since its made of brass and lights. (also nice to know about the springs incase!). Am too tempted to contact you now for one :p Seriously nice work!

That is a really great job! I hate to ask, but if something like that were to be up for sale, what kind of cash would be involved?

Cool, that's where mine have come from for the SG1Props ribbon device project.

They were the most accurate I could find, but it's nice to know that they are actually authentic as well.

Pete, beautiful work. I am so pleased to see that it came out as you envisioned it early on.
