StarGate rebooted trilogy?

That reminds me of an interesting trend I noticed-

Stargate SG-1 = Star Trek: The Next Generation - Basic formula of crew focusing on exploration.

Stargate Atlantis = Star Trek: DS9 - Both crews on a remote station that they didn't build but merely "inherited", guarding an important passage vital to the safety of their home from a powerful and populous enemy.

Stargate Universe = Star Trek: Voyager - Both crews stuck on a spaceship an impossibly far distance from Earth trying to get back home.

Therefore, I can only conclude that the next Stargate series would have been a prequel series that would have been about an SG team in the 1930s yet somehow still have the same level of technology as SG-1. :p

Followed by a JJ Abrams reboot where 21 year old O'neil is promoted to Colonel in his Senior year of the academy for no explained reason. The rest of the team is already in place and a year older than he is in this reality.

Re: Stargate - Instant death to 20 years of TV history :(

Better start saving for a bunch of new props hitting the market ;)

I can state with a million % certainty that I wont be buying anything that ever comes to the market from this
- the execs at MGM should be made to work in the mines of Abydos for what they plan to do

Re: Stargate - Instant death to 20 years of TV history :(

The reason the Stargate franchise has a strong fanbase isn't because of one average movie from 20 years ago, it's because of 17 seasons and 350+ episodes of great television that built up its own detailed and interesting mythology (a lot of which required retconning the movie), and a lot of beloved characters, that this will all wipe away for some quick and easy cash.

Totally agree.
I am desperate for some new SG.......just not in this form.

I predict that this new Stargate movie will fail, as others have said before, there's just too many fans of SG-1 and its sequels that are not going to like this movie and won't go to see it and I don't think that the original has enough of a following to rely on that fanbase. Then there's the casual movie going audience, I'm not sure that they're going to want to see a remake of a somewhat obscure sci-fi movie from how many years ago? I really wish MGM would just give us another Stargate series on TV, something grounded like SG-U but with a little more humor and not quite so dark like SG-1 & Atlantis.

20 years. A lot better than the last Spider-man reboot :p

I thought SG-1 had plenty of humor.
INDEED

Oh I dunno. I'll reserve judgement till we hear about the plot, actors and some preview pics.

In the meantime, I'll just say ......... yes please ! And I have a feeling I'm going to love it :D .... I hope so anyway :)

But for goodness sake, they should use a tiny trickle of their budget to make ONE more SGU episode. I NEED to know if Eli fixed the pod or not :lol

I can't wait:D :facepalm OH NO I'll have to build another style of gate, my wife is going to kill me :lol:lol

:lol:lol:lol

So long as its round, spins, lights up, ka-chings and makes a puddle, I'm all for it :lol

I am sooooooooo hungry for anything Stargate at this point. My SG DVD's are going to have meltdown soon :lol

I typically roll my eyes at reboots but I wouldn't mind seeing a new SG on the big screen. Loved the concept of the original film as a kid, with better FX and an eye to world-building, this could be a solid franchise.

Re: Stargate - Instant death to 20 years of TV history :(

Like what, exactly?

Mostly a lot of expanding on things that were poorly defined or glossed over in the movie, or that just made more sense to change to make the series workable as a weekly format.

It's been a little while since I've seen the movie, but the series changed/defined the form of possession of Ra over the host to the concept of the Goa'uld symbiote in the head rather than the more vague alien idea the movie only briefly touched upon, and I recall in the movie Ra was supposed to be the last of his kind? Then they also expanded it further to the Jaffa concept and how that created the god/slave dynamic of their culture.
And while a big plot point of the movie was figuring out the gate address on Abydos to get home, it didn't even address how they actually dialed the gate from the other side without the military supercomputer they had on Earth. The series had to add the DHD concept. I can't remember if the movie hints at the possibility of other stargates, or whether it was just the two, but in the movie the Abydos gate was at the other side of the known universe, and had a different set of glyphs, whereas in the series they changed it to actually be one of the closest stargates, with the majority of stargates being within the same galaxy and thus using the same symbols (nice and TV friendly!). It was also used as an explanation as to why they were able to get a lock with that gate and not through other random dialing.

Just little details that any new movies will ignore, or intentionally change to something completely different. While the original movie isn't bad by any means, the only reason I even watch it is because of the series that it spawned. It was very light on the scifi side, including the stargate mechanic itself, and to me very lacking compared to what SG-1 did with the concept. The stargate concept had/has a lot of potential, and it was the series that realized that potential and made me a fan of the franchise.

The idea of Ra being an alien to becoming a symbiote was kinda expanded upon outside the show. Basically, the alien we saw in the movie was not Ra, but the symbiote possessing one of the Asgard temporarily. Since the Asgard make pretty crappy hosts, that is why Ra was "dying" and took the primitive human as a host, thus discovering that humans were ideal hosts and bringing every one else on board. No real reason why that particular Asgard looked different, though, except maybe the lack of compatibility somehow degraded or mutated the Asgard host's body.

As to why the movie Jaffa had no symbiotes, it was explained outside the show that Ra, being the Supreme System Lord, was paranoid about maintaining his position and wouldn't allow any other Goa'uld anywhere around him for any real length of time.
