StarGate rebooted trilogy?

I think it would be hard for fans to accept anything other than the universe the tv shows established. I know the guys who made the movie didn't like that, but I'm not sure how you're going to backtrack now.

This is a tough situation for me. I'm actually not that much of a fan of the original movie except in retrospect as it relates to the SG-1 canon (and SG-1 still takes precedence to me as far as retconning goes).
But from what I've heard of the potential SG-1/SGA movies, I'm not too confident in how they would have turned out either. Despite a shaky start, Universe got really good near the end, so I would have liked to see that continue, but that has passed now.
And I'm not really sure there's a lot of potential for a new series that follows the canon to capture a large enough audience to continue. The technology and mythology developed so far that I don't know what else they could do with it.

So in that regard, I'm not entirely against a reboot movie at this point, however my concern is Emmerich's disregard for the series, and if it's a trilogy of movies, I suspect it could have too conclusive an ending to allow any kind of rebooted series, and if it did, it may not be too similar to the series we know and love.

Stargate is my favourite scifi franchise, but I just really don't know how I'd like it to progress from here.
On one hand, having it revived and popular in any form can be a good thing. The new Transformers movies weren't great, but they gave us Transformers: Prime, perhaps the best of all the series, and a renewed interest in the franchise.
On the other hand, it's not the same Stargate I'm interested in, and could create the same divide between new and old fans that the new Trek movies have, and how the franchise progresses from there is anyone's guess at the moment.

I still think they could come back to Universe whenever they wanted, but unlike Veronica Mars or Party Down which are getting movies, the Stargate franchise is too big to be bought out by a new network or whatever, which would have to happen for it to go back into production. But even though it won't ever happen, there's still some hope. If they do a new trilogy of movies, it's definitely over.

The only problem that I had with Universe is that it started waaaay too slow and didn't do things that made sense. For example, once they figured the stones out (which they already knew about from SG1) the only smart thing would be immediately get either McKay or Carter to come help them out. Yet when they finally did do a first cameo it was Daniel Jackson and he wasn't even there to help figure out the ship! The acting was great, I think they just took too long and lost a lot of the fans.

Yea, I agree. But I was completely sold by the time that time travel/settling on the planet and creating a whole new civilization episode came around. After that I would have kept watching even if it devolved like Sliders.

No! Enough with the reboots. I want more Stargate, not new Stargate. Stargate is a sci-fi classic that deserves to be left untouched from reboots.

Well, I can tell you right now that Devlin and Emmerich will NOT use the SG-1 story lines at all. They have both publicly stated that they did not like the series and did not consider it canonical to their vision of the franchise.

So, this reboot would be Devlin's and Emmerich's large middle finger pointed at... who? The fans of SG1 obviously, but.. who else, and why?
What upset them so much that they want to do this?

As much as I enjoyed the original film, I feel the series was 10 times better. Usually, series based on movies, feel a bit second-rate, but with SG-1, it was the other way around.

SG-1 was great until the crap with the Ori. Atlantis was ok at first, but then it became painfully obvious that they were re-hashing old SG-1 episodes. SG-U started off a little bit too slow, but really finished strong.

The problem with a movie like SG-1, is that it's too big to contain in one, or even a trilogy, of movies. That's why the series made so much sense. Each week, you could explore the history of the gate system, and delve deep into the mythos. That type of stuff is almost impossible to cover in 6 hours of movies.

I wouldn't mind a re-boot of the original movie, but they should try to incorporate some of the stuff put forward in SG-1.

After the bond movies, I would guess that SG1 is MGM's biggest cash cow from all the re-runs and the continuing merchandise
I'm pretty sure that the powers that be within MGM will NEVER let Devlin & Emmerich do a set of films as they know it would P a LOT of people off and then bye bye cash cow ---- My opinion is that MGM will license someday a continuation of Universe or SG1 ( with SG1 set in the future if they go that route )
... with SGU, the actors went inter hibernation, so they can use any actor down the line to play anybody so long as its still the same kind of character of the original ( But I'd bet that schedules allowing, that ALL the original SGU actors would jump at the chance to play themselves again )

I would like to see more Battlestargate Voyager, ermmm I mean SGU.

That reminds me of an interesting trend I noticed-

Stargate SG-1 = Star Trek: The Next Generation - Basic formula of crew focusing on exploration.

Stargate Atlantis = Star Trek: DS9 - Both crews on a remote station that they didn't build but merely "inherited", guarding an important passage vital to the safety of their home from a powerful and populous enemy.

Stargate Universe = Star Trek: Voyager - Both crews stuck on a spaceship an impossibly far distance from Earth trying to get back home.

Therefore, I can only conclude that the next Stargate series would have been a prequel series that would have been about an SG team in the 1930s yet somehow still have the same level of technology as SG-1. :p

I actually don't remember much about the books (I read two of them, I think), but I don't remember it being that far off from the series in terms of story. The tone was quite different, of course, and a lot of the little details were different, but it hit all the same high points. Infighting amongst the remaining rulers (what were Go'auld in the series, I want to say they were just humans in the books), various attempts to take back the mines on Abydos, etc. That's why I wasn't surprised in the slightest when, in the series' pilot episode, they had the "big reveal" that there was a vast network of Stargates across the galaxy. The books made that clear right from the get-go, and didn't even make a big fuss out of it. It was obvious that they always intended for there to be a whole network of them, not just the link between Earth and Abydos. One difference is that they weren't built by "Ancients".. I want to say they were built by the alien race that Ra came from.

On the whole, though, I think any attempt to remake the franchise in that image probably won't work very well. Fans got too used to SG-1 and the whole new mythology that they came up with. Stargate has a pretty big following, and I think most of them would be put off by an attempt to completely rewrite the whole continuity of the show, despite the "original intentions" of the guys that sold the rights away.

I am not a hardcore Stargate fan, but I very well remember the first film in theaters and it was SOLID. I wouldn't have changed a thing about it and it is not dated. Certainly an expansion of the franchise could be done, but there is NO reboot needed for this.

I love all three incarnation of the show, and when I first saw this news I had hope, I hate the idea of throwing out the continuity but if there was a good director at the helm I think I could feel good about. (I could even stand for a new Trek branching timelines thing.) But Roland Emmerich is just not a passable director and he has no respect for his little movie has become. I can sympathies that the shows were not the direction he wanted to go with his sequel, but that ship has sailed and blowing off all the characters and stories of SG1/SGA/SGU would be stomping on the good will of a lot of fans.

As a long time fan of SG-SG1 (hence the avatar from ages ago!) I did get disheartened by some of the direction SG1 took at the end, and that of Atlantis as well. Although I've stayed open minded, my initial reaction of a reboot was - "if you can pull it off well, I'll be objective." But he would really have to do a tremendous job and not giving any nods to the series would be a mistake. The original writers of the book jumped off the project when it wasn't being portrayed the way they wanted to see it and took it a direction they didn't want it to go. So really, I think there are a lot of different directions the story line could go and not necessarily in a good way. I'm afraid of a story that focuses on Abadoys again, like there is no other planet or planets to go. I also think the writers of the book didn't intend the goa'uld to be a snake like race. So who knows what kind of trip we could be taken on...

But I will keep an open mind, even it if means that all that is done is a wave of attention to a well done series. :)

Re: Stargate - Instant death to 20 years of TV history :(

Very sad news. It's known that Emmerich doesn't care for the TV series, and wants to do things his own way, which will no doubt contradict what the series made possible, so I don't care for this news one bit.
The reason the Stargate franchise has a strong fanbase isn't because of one average movie from 20 years ago, it's because of 17 seasons and 350+ episodes of great television that built up its own detailed and interesting mythology (a lot of which required retconning the movie), and a lot of beloved characters, that this will all wipe away for some quick and easy cash. To me this decision is a slap in the face to Stargate fans.

If they must reboot it, reboot it in a way that is respectful the the TV series that has carried the fanbase for over 15 years, or even better, give us a new series in some form instead. To me this decision is the equivalent of rebooting Star Trek to The Cage, and wiping out Captain Kirk, Scotty, Uhura, McCoy, Chekov, Sulu, and every Trek subsequent series.

Re: Stargate - Instant death to 20 years of TV history :(

My girlfriend texted me this news earlier today thinking it would make me happy. She was so wrong...

Better start saving for a bunch of new props hitting the market ;)
