Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

Rewatching that trailer, and with not a single idea of any spoilers, I wanna think all that Kylo and Rey stuff on the Death Star is the first part of the movie. Get it out of the way.
And I’m still not sure palpatine is alive, alive....

there’s still something fun about trying to break it apart when you avoid spoilers.

Really I think it's just they want the book readers and video gamers to feel special as well. So they put some of the lore in those mediums.
 
It's not lore if it was in the game after Disney acquired them. I have played Battlefront II campaign and know of Operation Cinder and the Jakku ties to TFA. For some that don't have the exposure to this, it does leave a backstory gap (if they use that tie-in narrative somehow). SW is a bit different than some franchises though, in that we (or most of us) want to consume and learn as much as we possible can, but if you don't utilize all of the media available, you will have blanks. I never followed the EU books, and have not read the "New" cannon novelizations, so for me some of that material would be new if introduced now.

I did like TFA and felt like it was a true SW movie. The plot narrative lost me during TLJ and left me numb for quite a while. I have come to accept some of that movie, and even appreciate some aspects, but over all I still feel it was a cluster **** and did a disservice to the franchise and failed to move the new characters forward (with the exception of Poe). Who did what people complained about with Rey. He experienced a success, get slapped down by his arrogance, and grow as a character from his achievement/failure. He will is a better developed character for that fact alone. Rey should have experienced some of the same treatment, but didn't really.

I am holding out hope for TROS as I really want to see a "new" satisfying ending to the trilogy now that we started this journey. Anticipation sucked me into pre-ordering my tickets. I really want to love it and have tried to avoid major spoilers. At this point, I don't care what happens to the new characters, so long as my beloved character from the OT/PT are given the respect they are do and a "final" ending they deserve.

Then perhaps maybe we can find some peace in the new material and locate that common thread that once bound us all together.
 
I wrote a big long post about what I thought will happen in IX and how excessive fan service and call outs to anything with Star Wars as part of its name will crash this movie, but then I remembered that people get angry if you voice your opinion here and will claim you are just “saying the same things” over and over again. So I’ll just stick to saying outside of that throne, the dagger, and the space horses, if they had shown this trailer in place of the D23 one, and not ever shown that one, I’d still be excited about seeing this movie. Who knows? I wasn’t blown away by TFA the first time but it’s grown on me. I liked TLJ in theaters but some of the flaws have diminished the entertainment I get from it over time. Heck, I used to like the prequels. So my opinion could change. We’ll see.

Yeh, I'm in for the trainwreck too. I will not be as disappointed as I was, like everyone in that theatre, after TLJ. But TLJ is the problem here. TFA wasn't good or innovative. But it brought up some characters and questions. I didn't know what to do with Rey after TFA, but at least she was on a path to something that could be her arc and answering some questions. Ruin Johnson then really took everything from the new characters, except Poe who got my sympathy because he was the only one acting normal when Admiral Purple Idiot came up with her stupid plan and didn't tell anyone about it. Even if Poe and the whole opening of TLJ made it crystal clear from the first second, that Johnsoin did really everything to ruin his shot on the franchise.

My problem is that this whole trilogy is dead. If JJA finds away to ignore TLJ, maybe there'll be quite a good story. But after all we've seen so far it's just another trip from Mary Sue down the nostalgia road while killing everything that made the OT so great.

They're grasping at straws from the EU to bring in younger fans and the OT for older fans. It should make for some great comedic edits when I replace the audio. ;) (y)

I initially liked TFA, but it hasn't aged well for me. I will never watch TLJ again though. For me, these three movies aren't part of the "saga", they don't connect to the first 6 in the same way the OT and PT do, and these three movies don't really feel like a trilogy, either.

At the end if the day, though - it's Star wars - for me. I don't like Disney's approach to this story, but Star Wars has been such a part of my life for so long... It difficult to put down.

Its a little like having a coffee with a girl who you just broke up with. Maybe I'm in an abusive relationship? Maybe it's because it may be the last time I see even remnants from the OT on the big screen?

I dunno, can't explain it beyond that. I have tickets for first night and second night. I only saw TLJ three times, a record low for me, not something I'd ever predicted. Will I get tickets for a third viewing? I hope I want to, but I'm checking expectations at the door.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. I though TFA was a good not overly inventive redo of ep. IV. It was entertaining, and we watched it a lot. Especially when it came out on blu ray. However, TLJ changed all of it. I've never watched TLJ a second time, the movie was just that bad to me. In fact, it was so bad that it ruined what enjoyment I got from TFA because of what I knew was to follow.

Will we go see IX, yes. Am I as excited for it as I was for the OT when I was a kid, or the PT as an adult, no. When I saw the latest trailer for IX, I was kinda meh. It's kinda like going out to lunch with the ex that is so beautiful on the outside, but utterly soulless on the inside that you find yourself asking.. "Why am I here?"

I don't like the disjointed, stilted approach they've taken to this trilogy, and I believe we can thank Ruin Johnson for that. How he got so much control that TLJ actually affected changes to TFA in editing and post I will never know. I wish we would have gotten this film for TFA: Lost Interview With TFA Editor.

All speculation aside and remembering that every one out there is allowed to enjoy what they will.
Does anyone really think this Lucasfilm group, JJA included, have what it takes to salvage this story arc ?
 
They have really set a high goal for this film- TLJ got them into a corner they not only have to climb out of but they announce they are making this film wrap up the entire saga also...
I expect them to try and take some short cuts but still then it is a lot to accomplish in one film.

You have to remember they have 30 years of stuff to cover. They have to juggle how much exposition/flashback/mystery they want. I'm mean sure you can fill in everything that's happened in 30 years, but then you do so at the expense of the story at hand. That's why Star Wars has the title crawl. That's supposed to be the main thing that catches everyone up to speed.

It's quite easy. Palpatine could be like "I was preparing for this day since before the Death Star was finished." Or something like that. Sweet, quick, and efficent. Our imaginations/other material can fill out the details. I mean we're talking about a guy who destroyed the Republic and the Jedi from the inside. A plan that was decades in the making. To think he would not have a backup plan for his apprentice trying to off him, just doesn't make sense.
