Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Pre-release)

It’s safe to say that no one’s argument in this thread is likely to sway someone else’s opinion of the movie. As far as I’m concerned we all watch the movies and make up our own minds.

Something I find a bit surprising, though, is the apparent optimism of some people here. Specifically I’m referring those who didn’t like TFA or TLJ (and heck, maybe the rest of the Disney films too?), but who took the time to watch the trailer already. Did you expect to be disappointed? Pleasantly surprised? Maybe it’s just morbid curiosity?

I also wonder: is there anyone who’s excited or even interested in TROS who didn’t enjoy EITHER of the previous episodes in the sequel trilogy?

Nothing wrong with feeling that way, I’m just curious. I think if it were me I’d have written off this third episode since it’s a sequel to one (TLJ,) and directed by the same guy who did the other (TFA.)

I am strangely interested in TROS.

I initially liked TFA, but it hasn't aged well for me. I will never watch TLJ again though. For me, these three movies aren't part of the "saga", they don't connect to the first 6 in the same way the OT and PT do, and these three movies don't really feel like a trilogy, either.

At the end if the day, though - it's Star wars - for me. I don't like Disney's approach to this story, but Star Wars has been such a part of my life for so long... It difficult to put down.

Its a little like having a coffee with a girl who you just broke up with. Maybe I'm in an abusive relationship? Maybe it's because it may be the last time I see even remnants from the OT on the big screen?

I dunno, can't explain it beyond that. I have tickets for first night and second night. I only saw TLJ three times, a record low for me, not something I'd ever predicted. Will I get tickets for a third viewing? I hope I want to, but I'm checking expectations at the door.

when I see a wall of anything ... Star Wars... marvel... the scale is all over the place. What are you collecting? Grandma gives you a Rey that is 2 inches taller than your Kylo.... and neither fit into the falcon your aunt bought you.

I still say Snoke knew exactly what Kylo was going to do to him. He pretty much narrorates his own death and talks about Kylo turning his saber to strike his true enemy. Wouldn't shock me if Grandpa Palpatine's essense may have been in Snoke or something like that. Not saying 100% of course, but 100% in my opinon Snoke KNEW Kylo was going to kill him and did nothing to stop it.

In the movie, you can tell that Kylo is actually doing the things Snoke is narrating but while Snoke is focused on that aspect (because he thinks he has complete control over his protege like all Sith masters) with his other hand he kills Snoke. Some misdirection on Kylo's part. I doubt Snoke know Kylo was going to kill him. Does this look like a face that knew what was gonna occur?

I think Kylo finds balance in the dark and the light. He always keeps us guessing which side he's on. Maybe the rise of "Skywalker" is a new jedi order, using both light and dark together equally, the new version of Grey. And both Rey and Kylo teach it together so there is no conflict between sides, that way they both get what they want: Rey doesnt go evil, and Kylo gets her to join him. Each of them seem way too important to kill off at the end, the only way I see these two is joining together for a greater galaxy

Man did some of you guys even watch Empire Strikes Back? "Boba doesn't do anything" has got to be the most bizarre oversimplification in ESB, which is weird because we love it because of how well written it is.
Literally every other character in Empire Strikes Back fails at their goals but him
The Rebels - Forced to abandon their new base on Hoth and left running licking their wounds
Han, Leia, Chewie, etc.. - Unable to escape the pursuing Imperials after fleeing Hoth
Luke- Fails to listen to Yodas warnings before the cave, highlighting his flaws
The Empire- Fail to capture the Falcon and her crew and are forced to hire Bounty Hunters, find the Falcon only to then immediately lose it again
Boba Fett - Uses Hans own trick against him and figures out where our heros are heading to BEFORE they even get there, enabling the ambush by Vader ✔
Yoda & Obi-Wan- Fail to convince Luke to stay and compete his training before facing Vader
Han, Leia, Chewie, etc..- Captured by Vader after being betrayed and are then tortured in order to draw in Luke. Han gets encased in carbonite
Lando- Fails to keep any semblance of his end of the “deal” with Vader, and is forced to give Han over to Boba Fett, and Leia and Chewie over to Vader, loses his city to the Empire
Vader- Fails to encase Luke in carbonite as planned
Leia, Chewie, Lando- Fail to rescue Han from Boba Fett
Boba Fett- Leaves the city along with his bounty for Jabba, dealing with the least amount of nonsense possible on the way out. ✔
Luke- Entirely underestimates his enemy, is quickly overwhelmed, loses a hand and brought to the point of complete devastation before attempted self sacrifice, and is then saved by the very friends he went there to save
The Empire/Vader- Fail to capture the Falcon one final time

He's literally the cause of the second and darkest half of the film for our heros. He's hired to do a job. Does it incredibly well. Gets his prize, and checks the hell out of there. Boom. Mission accomplished
Very much recommend reading this cause Boba is absolutely amazing secondary character writing. They don't always need to be flashy and flying around shooting crap..

here's something dude, by saying this you assume that both friendship is based on the amount of time spent with someone, and that han, luke, leia, r2, and chewie can be his only friends ever.

I don't think that assumption is in the quote. C3PO spent not only many years with the OT crew but also formative years facing peril and adventure together.
Personally I'm of the opinion that a collection of non living mechanical parts have as much chance of feeling friendship as my laptop does so the whole sequence seems like yet another stupid nostalgia grab from DSW.

Yeah, what Bigdaddy said basically... I dont care how much time has passed that Poe may or may not have known him well between ROTJ and TFA... I dont care that 3 years is supposedly passing between TLJ and this film...
Myself, as an Audience member, finds it very jarring for 3PO to have an incredibly intimate moment such as this with these "characters" because we never got to experience any of these interactions along with the characters. We got nothing but that in the OT and even the PT, adventures and interactions and struggles that helped form who characters ultimately became (at least once upon a time) and survived together. We get NONE of that in the ST which is why I find it so offensive and confusing. Had they actually developed any of these new characters rather than having them simply piggy-back off our now dead heros I probably wouldn't have and issue, but in this one film I just dont see how they can do that with all the other crap they have to get done since TLJ is effectively filler where nothing really goes anywhere

There is a difference with expressing dissatisfaction and posting pretty much the same thing whenever someone posts something positive or new about these movies lol.

I'm fine with people not liking new Star Wars stuff but at some point you have to move on. Instead, some people post their dislike for this movie (that has not bee released yet) on the 1st 5 pages of this thread AND.....checks notes...the 218th page of the thread!

Constantly saying the same negative stuff is not really discussion.

People are allowed to voice their opinions on things, especially when discussing the subject of what makes quality film. A new trailer sparks new discussion. Just because we don't like the ST and the direction its taken and looks to still be taking, that doesn't automatically invalidate what is likely decades of love and passion for StarWars
If the OT is the Mona Lisa to me, the PT would be like if George painted a new one using Photoshop.. Neat but meh.. easily ignored. The OT edits are like if George went back and changed Mona Lisa's smile and eyebrows because he wasn't happy the first time around.
The ST is like someone insanely rich bought the Mona Lisa and then painted over it with their own version and are now confused why everyone is all "WTF"
I could at least ignore the PT by and large if I wanted, and it isnt even the story that's bad there. Unfortunately I can't legally get the unedited OT, but there are ways... The ST however I will always know completely undid all the achievements of the OT heros before killing them off so that our new heros can finish the job they already did...
People are allowed to be upset about something they had/have significant investment in, and expecting them to just up and abandon that because they don't agree that it's being done as well as it should be is kinda crappy. And voicing negative opinions is often how we improve future films, be it in their story writing, execution, characters, music, pacing or what have you. Why do you think Disney stopped doing yearly SW? Solo actually lost money. Think about that for a minute, a STARWARS movie LOST money

My theory is the First Order is a contingency plan created by Palpatine. Snoke was a follower of Palpatine. And was given the responsibility of readying the galaxy for his return.

Palpatine did have a whole Contingency. Operation Cinder was the first stage of it. He had two things he held to be so if he died:

1) An Empire that failed to protect its Emperor did not deserve to survive.
2) Nature abhors a vacuum. The very nature of the people who rose in the Empire meant potentially never-ending squabbling over the corpse.

Operation Cinder targeted several key loyalist planets to pre-emptively take out the more potentially-ambitious Emperor-wannabes. Other assets were tasked to take out specific individuals. The other main part of the Contingency was Grand Admiral Rae Sloane and General Brendol Hux (the father of the ST's General Hux) taking a bunch of promising child recruits and heading out to a predetermined rendezvous point in the Unknown Regions to meet up with the Emperor's flagship, the Eclipse, and get what would eventually be the First Order going.

We still have no frikkin' idea who Snoke was, or what his role in all this was. One thing that is obvious is that the Supremacy is not the Eclipse. Never mind the impact on the final act of ROTJ, I can see Palpatine setting all this up with some mechanism in place to come back, somehow, at some point, to take command of this ready-made Empire Mark II. I can also see it being "Palpatine" -- that is, a projection or con or something like that, someone using his image as a power grab or some other "ignore the man behind the curtain" mechanic. At this point, I could see it going either way.

Also, there's a series from Marvel called Allegience that takes place in the years between TLJ and TROS, as well as a novel from Delilah Dawson following up on characters from her novel Phasma last seen sometime in a year or two prior to TFA. I have no idea yet how much of what's in them will end up being relevant to what we get in TROS, but based on past precedent, I imagine there'll be a nonzero amount of pertinent info that should be up there on the big screen -- along with what I wrote above about the Contingency. I'm curious if anything about that will make it into TROS to finally explain what the heck is up with this First Order thing, anyway. And no, the opening crawl of TFA is insufficient. Palpatine had the resources of the Republic he could co-opt and corrupt into the Empire. The First Order had no such foundation to "rise" from. That we know of. And there's the rub.

How is it possible that I've seen every SW film except Solo and never heard of Palpatine's contingency plan? I assume it's from the EU but it seems like a major plot point to toss in to the final film without any reference for the audience.

I don't think that answers my question, it just exemplifies creating a narrative that didn't exist before to allow yet another OT character to return for the slaughter.
