And a quick example of how arrogant and full of himself someone is when anyone who liked the movie is an "apologist". Really? Im sorry but I will simply not going to tolerate that. Keep disliking me. I will state my opinion either way.

Also, I've heard in several breakdown video's I've watched people are asking when did Palpatine have time to have a son.

Unless I missed it couldn't Palpatine have used to Force to create Rey or create life in Reys's parents like he did with Anakin/Shmi ?

Sorry for the necro-post...just got to see it today - broke my foot last thursday and couldn't get that far til now!

Also, a gambit at trying to turn this thread back to the movie and not the bickering.

But...don't see palpatine between the end of Rots until a few hours (of in-verse time) in Rebeles, and not again until a few seconds in ESB and his hands become full in ROTJ. That's the bulk of 20 years where we have no clue what he was doing.

So yesterday at work I was reflecting on the Star Wars saga. And I was thinking of how I would sum up the three trilogies. And this what came up with......

Palpatine and the Sith have their revenge on the Jedi. When they turn Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to their cause and take control of the Galatic Republic.

The children of Anakin Skywalker redeem their father and with his help overthrow Palpatine.

Some 3 decades later, Palpatine and the Sith exact revenge on the Skywalker family, and try to reclaim the galaxy. But they thwarted by his granddaughter and the grandson of Anakin Skywalker.

So in short, the entire Star Wars saga is a family drama. A drama about one dysfunctional family, and their conflict with the Dark Lord of the Sith, Sheev Palpatine.

The Sequal Trilogy has had its ups and downs(more ups than downs for me). It has given nostalgia, joy, and challenged me to look at Star Wars differently. It may not have ended exactly like I wanted to. But you know what, even if it had been all bad, it would have been worth it just to get a new Lego Star Wars game! :p

The only hint I caught was the FO Star Destroyer Captain saying "Jam their speeders!" as the Resistance ship lands on the SD. A crew member responds something like "they don't have speeders"... I've never heard of "jamming speeders", but it played like they used the 'horses' to avoid a defense against mechanical transport. ??? You're guess is as good as mine, as it was never explained. It stuck out at the time, because "jam their speeders!" sounded really dumb.

My main gripes, other than it becoming the "Rise of Palpatine" were that Force powers are now totally over the top... ripping ships in half? Healing wounds? Has healing ever showed up in the EU before this weeks Mandolorian episode? I guess Anakin can be proud that his grandson finally figured out how to raise the dead...

The other thing was finding ships abandoned in deserts or submerged in sea water for decades and firing them right up and taking off. The Mandalorian's ship got stripped to the frame in hours, and we're supposed to believe a ship in plain veiw in the desert for 30 years is intact and untouched? And Luke's X-wing fires right up? Never mind that one of the wings was used to make a door for his hut?

Overall, I thought it was an enjoyable movie. Though the plot was obviously at least partially contrived to fix the damage from TLJ, it brought things to a mostly satisfying conclusion.

On another note, our theater was only about 1/3 full. TFA and TLJ were packed... hopefully this sends a financial message...

The ship thing was in The force unleashed 1 or 2, though i think they did it with a SD. Force healing has been in the games at least since they made Kyle Katarn a jedi. It's also in the mandalorian.

I'm guessing JJ didn't read the VD because as far as I know that's the only place the door being part of the xwing is mentioned.

The ship starting up seems odd, but they're in a place where they party they stumble on comes around every 42 years. Perhaps that part of the planet is off limits during those times? Who knows. Still seems odd I agree.

I wanted yoda to pop up when he lifted the xwing up to say 'finally figured it out, you have' :)

The bit that seemed over the top to me is that Jedi or is it the never heard it before 'dyad' have the power to transfer objects at will? Stealing the necklace, knocking the vader helmet to the planet, transferring the saber to him etc. Luke dies because the power to send yourself takes soo much power...same theoretically with Leia (the people in the camp seem to know it will happen). Yet those two can do it at will, pass physical objects, fight, and are no worse for wear. So, i think we're owed some explanation there.

Shhhh....silence brothers and sisters.

Whenever nerds fight, disagree, and debate about “Star Wars”, Rian and Kathleen slap a “high five” and Palpatine grows another “Snoke In A Jar”.

And Clarence loses his wings :(

In all seriousness, it’s great to debate these issues, and to each his/her own, but at the end of the day, we’re all passionate fans. I can say that even if I disagree with a fellow member’s viewpoint, I highly respect the fact that they are passionate and have a clear line of reason behind what they believe. Let us not also forget, that at the end of the day, no opinion is wrong, as long as it is my own ;)

Just read an interesting article, how ROS Palpaptine was not really Palpatine as we know him, but the embodiment of the Sith "spirit". Well, I am just going to call him Zombie Palpatine. My questions are:

1) Was Zombie Palpatine supposed to be the same person/body from ROTJ? As in, his body survived the fall down the tower shaft?
2) Was Zombie Palpatine a clone body (perhaps one of many Palpatine bodies), into which Death Star Palpatine transferred his spirit when Vader threw him down the tower shaft? (This is where I think I am at the moment)
3) In the prequels, was Senator/Viceroy/Emperor Sheev Palpatine a clone(s) all along? In other words, until ROS, have we ever actually seen the "real" Palpatine?
4) If #3 above is FALSE, then when did the "switch" occur, from the "real" Palpatine to a clone?
5) If #3 is TRUE, then did the "clone" Palpatine(s) know they were a clone? Or did they fell that they in fact WERE the one and only Palpatine?
6) For that matter, did Snoke realize he was one of many clones, the same way the Clone Troopers knew they were duplicates?
7) Did Vader (Or Maul, or Doku) know that the Palpatine they interacted with in the flesh, was in fact a clone of the "real" Palpatine on Exogul?

#7 above is a sobering thought. If Vader knew that his Master was able to inhabit multiple Golems of his real self, then it brings a terrible weight to the ROTJ line: "You DON'T know the power of the dark side... I MUST obey my master!"

If people just want to see people fight (or in this case, fly X-Wings and duel and force push and whatnot), why should the studio even try at all with the overly long films with barely an attempt at story?

There was a definite story in TROS. Whether you liked it or whether it was the story you wanted is irrelevant.

What I will agree with is that the overall narrative felt rushed because they were trying to put so much into the film. I said it previously here that I would not have minded at all sitting through another half hour of room in order to give the story more breathing room.

And I’ll say it again—if the OT “isn’t that good”, and it’s just “nostalgia and spectacle”, why aren’t I nostalgic for the PT? I wasn’t alive when the OT came out, and I grew up right in the primary demographic for the PT.

Couple of points here:

I certainly am not saying that the OT "isn't that good." I'm saying it has a lot of flaws and storytelling inconsistencies that we forgive. Those are two VERY different concepts.

And the fact that YOU personally are not nostalgic for the PT doesn't mean others aren't. But that's beside the point I was making in my previous comment -- which is that, in my opinion, the ST handles introducing nostalgia for the OT better than the PT handled nostalgia for the OT.

Just because it doesn’t tell the story of William Randolph Hearst, or adapt a Stephen King novel, or tell the millionth story about the mafia, its not art, right? Because art has to be gritty and miserable, isn’t that right? High art can only deal with miserable people doing miserable things, or be representative of some big huge enormous issue, as we all know. So let’s just pack up everybody; all of our criticisms on this movie are invalid because the first movies in this franchise “weren’t that good” and “aren’t high art”, so they can’t be analyzed or criticized. I guess we should leave this thread for those that just crunched down on popcorn and turned their brains off for two and a half hours, because that’s all these kinds of films are good for. In fact, why don’t we just shut down this whole site—most movies that have props and costumes to replicate aren’t “high art”, so they aren’t worth putting too much effort into.

Fantastic Strawmanning there. First rate.

The answer to all your questions is Yes (or perhaps No). The writers of TROS did not give you any answers to those questions, so believe what you want. If anyone tells you, you are wrong, they are lying.

I'm going to guess Palpatine is following something like "Altered Carbon" rules - specifically Laurens Bancroft. His conscience is being backed up off-site knowing he is a high value target. Death Star blows up - fire up a new clone at a remote site and inject the latest brain backup.

Hey cboath. First: very sorry to hear you broke your foot & I hope that you are on the mend!

Sometimes I'm okay with mystery/ambiguity. Remember when we all thought The Force was a mystical energy, etc? But then in the Prequels we were suddenly gifted with 'Midichlorians?' Brrr.... ;) :p

I also wanted Ghost Yoda to fist pump from beyond.

Hey long time no see :) Good to know you're still around!

You're right it's good somethings are a mystery - they didn't answer a lot and sometimes that's good. I'd say, though, don't throw it in our faces 'i need to tell you something' (multiple times), then blow it off. That's just lame/lazy.

I just think the passing stuff around was a step too far without explaining one iota of it. It was cool, no doubt, though. I'll live without an answer, but when it's something THAT big a lit expo would be nice. That was arguably a bigger thing than the force was in ANH, and the force WAS explained just enough that it was a never an issue as well.

As for the foot, been 8 days now - a long eight days. You quickly learn how much stuff is connected to your foot and how many different muscles it takes to walk on crutches :) It's improving, but i'm kinda stuck like this a minimum of two more weeks - then we see what the doc has to say then about walking, etc. At least it's much easier with the boot i got yesterday. Zero weight - keep it off the ground totally was a hard week 1.
