Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Pre-release)

I tagged the initial post as a spoiler but then mainstream media picked it up so it's now out there. The Rey Skywalker clan is losing its mind.

I don't read mainstream media articles like that for this reason.

...and I guess not this thread anymore either. It was inevitable, just didn't think it would be necessary almost 10 months out.

It could easily be misdirection:
Remember its rumoured Luke is supposed to be somewhat ill as Force Depresssion is the new insidious First Order power ("I don't want to fight the Sith anymore ,just stay in bed")!!!! and suffering some memory problems.
Or its possible that because he hasn't seen her since she was so small, he would not recognise her immediately (Even Vader couldn't sense he was with his daughter when he was torturing her for information in ANH).
Or he doesn't even know he actually had a daughter with somebody.
Or shes a new Force wielder abandonned by her family, fleeing the Unknown territories after the First Order invaded there.
Or shes Snokes granddaughter hidden from him.
Or, or ,orrrrrrrrrrr.......................
I can easily think of a dozen more variations on her parentage as has been brought up in this thread and other places numerous times.
I would point out its proabably a very deliberate ploy that they would choose to release that particular moment of dialogue with that particular information, given how central the mystery of Reys heritage has been to all the speculation on TFA .
Its obviously designed to ignite the discussion again just a few weeks out from the release of the trailer and Celebration and get things going again.
As it has.

There have to be a few others in here like me who find it lame that what they're going to keep holding over our heads', is Rey's parentage.

I get what you are saying but to be honest I dont think they intended it to be such a kerfuffle. In TFA Maz tells Rey her parents aren't coming back for her. So we are told she really has been orphaned by a family she has spent her life on Jakku waiting for. This is her Heroes Journey moment like when Luke saw Beru and Lars dead. She has finally given up that hope and now can become a hero. So that's there in the film but fans ignore it for the opportunity to sepeculate she is a Skywalker or Solo or Kenobibecause the EU conditioned us to that predisposition. And for the filmmakers it becomes a fun point of conjecture so they play coy with it.

You also have the fact the disney folks keep referring to the movie as the next chapter of the SKYWALKER FAMILY SAGA.....

Yes, but that was part of the very early comments from LF and KK and has become a shorthand for them to market position a film as having Luke and lightsabers as opposed to the stand alone films. I wouldn't be too pedantic about that comment, it's not a narrtive choice, it's more a brand choice.

This is just J.J.'s mystery box, adapted to Star Wars. That box was opened a long time ago, most found it to be empty. I don't think audiences will find it nearly as enthralling as J.J. thinks they will.

I think you are exaggerating JJ's import and influence on the next two films. He retains an Executive Production credit but everything I have heard or read is that the story want as locked down as you might think, a lot was left open ended to allow each new director freedom of choice. I'm willing to bet Rey's background fell into that discretion.

They're taking inspiration from George Lucas:
They're gonna make it up as they go, then say they had it all planned out from the start.

I reckon Luke is talking about someone other than Rey. This is just a big Red Herring much like Finn with the lightsaber in TFA.

I think Rey has a good case to get a lot of back child support money then! Well, unless they're dead.

Based on some of the footage that was seen, I have one concern. Possibly spoilery if you're avoiding them
If they do the whole "wearing enemy uniforms to infiltrate the base" crap AGAIN I'm gonna lose it.
