Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Pre-release)

That's not what he was talking about. I also seem to remember an old Jedi in a desert who came out "lightsaber swinging" when he was called back to duty... He did what a Jedi would do, not what Luke does in this movie. Obi Wan lost a LOT more than Luke, but he didn't break down and still came to help.

Mark Hamill says this is not his or Lucas' Luke. http://www.syfy.com/syfywire/mark-hamill-explains-why-the-last-jedi-is-not-my-luke

I agree and am treating this like the JJ ST as an alternate universe.

Always loved Mark Hamill. If you read or watched how he fought for the Original Star Wars in documentaries or interviews he was just awesome how he championed the movie and tried to bring everyone on set to the level of excitement he had.

Now with Mark expressing how he truly feels about the character he brought to life makes me love him even more. For letting us fans know how he truly feels.

Validated with what ever lightsaber he chooses. Thank you Mark :)

Some people are calling him out as just taking a pay check, but I think, like every SW movie after ANH, they don't get the script before they sign.

Did we all see the same film? Luke never said he wanted the journey to end, only that the old Jedi ways weren't the way to get there.

I have to admit, my mind went back in time after seeing TLJ to several of my friends absolutely hating Luke Skywalker, through all the films, and wishing he was not the focus of the story.

I could not escape the idea that Rian Johnson was never a fan of Luke, and his love of Star Wars was anchored in space battles and space ships, and not so much in mystical energy fields and light sabers. It's just a hunch.

I think Mark Hamill did a fantastic job with what he had to work with. Mark though, has an uncommon understanding of his fan base, because he's a fan himself. He's also a decent writer and story teller. I enjoyed his comic books back in the day.

Yea, I wish people would stop trying to justify the fundamental change to Luke's character in this movie. Even the actor himself says the character he plays in this movie is not the same as the one he played in the OT. And pointing to his one acquiescence ("...it's not my story anymore. It's somebody else's story, and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective.") doesn't bolster any arguments. Acceptance of what Johnson wanted is not the same as agreeing with his ideas. A friend of mine, who hasn't seen the movie yet, was told by a friend of his to think of Luke as if he's an entirely new character that we've never met before. Something that shouldn't have been necessary but is solid advice that I wish someone had told me before I saw the movie (not that I could have separated him from the man he was even if I was forewarned).

He does if he believes his involvement will do more harm than good.

Then why write the character as ‘ sacrificing ‘ himself at this point in time ? . He could have been aiding the resistance / Rey ( stealthily ) right up until the end of this trilogy . But of course that’s not what RJ wanted . It wasn’t his ‘ vision ‘ . :facepalm

That isn't something a hero does

Luke isn't the hero in these stories. Why would his character still be following that path? If you're going to invoke the Joseph Campbell Hero's Journey tropes, then Luke is now the old wizard.

Old Wizard Kenobi had no problem getting into gear in ANH. Luke Skywalker should be no less ready to get back into the fight.

He only did as much as he needed to in order to get Luke started. When it was time, he made the ultimate sacrifice to ensure that Luke would be inspired to do the right thing. Just like Luke in TLJ. Except Luke's sacrifice in TLJ will likely be felt on a much wider scale being that his legend is much more well known than Kenobi's ever was.

Seriously, stop with the fanboy whining of "Oh boohoo, Luke didn't do this, he didn't do that. My Luke would've have never done that.". Luke did exactly what was needed of him when the time was right.

The point is that OWK did indeed get back into the fight. Also, Luke did not do anything to get Rey started. He did the finger tickle and then shunned her forcing her to leave on her own.

Frankly, you seem to be getting more emotionally involved than any "fanboy" here. Angrily accusing people of whining and crying for simply having an opinion.

Sorry, but this is just you projecting and getting defensive. There is zero anger in my statement. There are ways to indicate anger when using written communication and I included none of them. At the end of the day all I really feel towards the people that are unable to see past their fanboy feelings is pity.

Calm level-headed people don't call others "fanboys whining" or claim they are "boohooing".

To put that another way.....
