Take another look. A good portion of the guard is metal and as you say wouldn't stop a saber strike.

That's kinda our point. We hate it, it's stupid, but it's the canon definition of it. So that's what we have to go with.
And seriously, regarding the lightzweihander... Apparently my links slipped by too fast in the deluge of posts, or else no one bothers to clicky these days, but here are some nice shiny pictures to show that it's not a new thing:
As for metal emitters. Yes, given enough time a lightsaber can cut through anything, but certain metals are resistant enough that the blade will be stopped long enough for the other party to do something. Reference: Vader's armor deflecting Luke's lightsaber, and the Magnaguards' staves repeatedly deflecting Anakin's and Obi-Wan's lightsabers. I will also include an honorary mention of the trimmed quarter-second of the Mace v. Jango fight where Jango deflects Mace's saber twice with his vambraces before Mace gets inside his guard and makes him a few inches shorter.
At any rate, crossguard lightsabers have been a part of the EU for years. I like the fact that they are now canon, thanks to hardcore SW geeks making this film. I'll hang a #fakeSWgeek tag on this for apparently no one but me reading Dark Horse's comics for all these years.

I keep reading similar statements but I'm not sure how it could even function as a guard the way he was holding it. The purpose of the guard is to have it extend outward past the fingers and in over the wrist. That's definitely NOT how it was being held in the teaser. Not to mention, the Jedi/Sith style of "sword play" has never really warranted the need for this.
Yes there's been hands getting lopped off in several of the films, but usually not during the sword play... in fact, if I remember right, most of the hand severing was from an upward swing, where there wouldn't be a guard anyway. Then there's the fact that normally a cross guard runs a good chance of touching the wielders wrist... so there's that hazard.
I know it was only shown for 1 second, so I (and many others) are rushing to judgement, but I see it as completely non-functional and an insult. The original series never saw a need to one-up the previous film with different/unusual saber styles. Obi Wan had blue. Luke had blue for two, green for one. Vader had red. That was it. I loved the green styling, but at it's core it was still in keeping with tradition.
Enter the prequels...
You have one-up v1.0 --- Darth Maul with the duel saber. Loved it. It totally fit his fighting style so it worked.
v2.0 --- Duku... I liked it because it was just a styling of the hilt. Of course then you have v2.1 of "OMG light sabers galore" in the arena battle and v2.2 with Annakin duel wielding and the final one-up of v2.3 with Yoda showing his saber prowess.
v3.0 --- again, insulting, with General Grievous and his 4 sabers. v3.1 with Anakin again, briefly, duel wielding. v3.2 with the Emperor v. Windu. v3.3 Emperor v.Yoda. v3.4 was the final ridiculous circus act over lava with Anakin v. Obi Wan. All in the spirit of what I assume was "give the fans what they want". If Star Wars was all about lightsabers I suppose they nailed it.... but all the lightsabers in the world couldn't save the bad story and acting of the prequels.

The links didn't slip by for me. I don't question if this style of weapon "existed", canon or not. I just question the choice of including it. The Yugo exists in the history of automobiles but I wouldn't suggest they include them in the next Fast&Furious movie.

Regarding the figure in the forest that ignites their saber blade while supposedly nobody is there.What if theyre being followed,not chased at speed but just followed and then get fed up,drawing their saber and then after the shot they turn to face their enemy. It would look more dramatic drawing the saber with their back turned and then slowly turning. Maybe their chasers are on to them for some reason but dont know they are a sith. Imagine the fright seeing them doing what they did in the trailer.

I am now more appreciative of the criticism that has been directed at the trailer in this thread, since most of it (if not all) have been done with better rationale and concern.
We don't know how the movie will really pan out until we see it. But until then it's good to have the excitement, speculation and balanced passionate discussion continue for a year. Cheers everyone .

Its been stated there are NO OT characters in the teaser trailer. Id even say its safe to assume neither Han/Chewie nor Luke/Leia are piloting the Falcon, not even R2 or 3P0.
