Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

don't fix what ain't broken right? If nothing else, I like that the McQuarrie design will see its day on the big screen. I would love to see Luke show up in his vintage X-wing, but who knows.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Just saw a fairly sizable collection of (supposed) leaked episode 7 concept art. I will say, SPOILER WARNING, because it matches up with a lot of the latest rumors and descriptions I've heard of leaked concept art. There's a pretty good chance these are real in my opinion, so look at your own discretion. That said:

Holy Sith, these look amazing and I want to see a trailer now!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

After looking at those pics, I agree they look real and very cool. Lots of spoilers in terms of production design but probably nothing that we won't learn from the theatrical trailers.

That blueprint sketch showing two sizes of Falcons is interesting. Looks like it could be a comparison of the size of the exterior shells in the old movies versus the interior sets.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

POSSIBLY SPOILERY COMMENT

Yeah, I was having trouble trying to decide whether "the carousel" was a slightly different scale of falcon or a totally separate second ship. Especially because of those square dish set pics vs a round one on every concept that is explicitly the Falcon, but that could just be a creative decision that was made after these concepts

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

It really looks like an amazing COLLABORATIVE effort indeed.

I so can't wait to see some of this footage in the trailers... HOPEFULLY SOON. This is just too awesome looking.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If anyone wants to meet Carrie Fisher, you can see her this Saturday at London Comic Con.
A bit pricey though for getting a photo with her!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

So many images that made me shout out and sit here wide eyed and open mouthed in pure excitement!

The team making E7 just GETS it.....they KNOW what Star Wars is, and SHOULD be!

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

That's definitely concept work and stage designs from SW7. I should add that , like every one who has enjoyed the rather beautiful "The Art of Star Wars" books over the years , alot of it gets dropped and often changed through to production , but I think the core of what we know about VII so far is well supported by this artwork. Hugely impressive though isn't it? Like I've said before this represents a massive restart for the franchise on an epic scale , by a cross generation of SW industy fans who absolutely KNOW why the original series struck such a powerful cord within them, and are doing everything humanly possible to bring it back to its roots. SW7 will just be the start of it,as much as Iron Man represented the proper restart of the Marvel universe. What we haven't really grasped yet is just HOW hugely exciting and dramatic this is going to be for us all.
I truely believe this will leave the vast majority of us absolutely stunned and amazed by what they finally manage to produce. God knows we have waited long enough for it.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

that s-foil question on the new X-Wing has been driving me nuts, so I made this rough mock up to see how it would work.

...

I tried it the other way too, with the engine remaining whole and not splitting. Posted in more detail here

Steve, you´re "der Meister" as we say over here in Germany.

I think they did go with the split engine design.

However, the new design reminds me a lot of those rip off japanese or chinese X-wing toys in the 70ies and 80ies.

This new X-Wing IMO lacks the "hero" factor of the old design, it looks like a sleeker, lighter version, especially with the half x-foils and those thin wing guns. Maybe it will have a different task in the new movies, i.e. just a transport and not a combat vehicle, story telling wise.

I would love to see both the old and new ones in action together ...

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I like how they are using things from the OT. I won't say much more than that in order to avoid spoilers for those who are trying to avoid the photos.

The problem with that is that they're over 30 years old now and beat to hell to boot, realistically the New Republic would have moved on to a new design by now and that's what it looks like too. Think about it, the original X-Wings were probably used very hard during the course of the rebellion and they probably didn't always have the time and/or resources to conduct proper repair and maintenance on them so that by this time they'd be falling out the sky so to speak. It just makes perfect sense for them to be using an X-Wing Mk. II now just like we're using F-15 & 16 Cs and have since retired the original Eagles and Falcons models that first flew during the late '70s and early '80s.

I think you make a really good point, but then again, hard use is the name of the game in Star Wars. A banged up bypassed boiler-plate xwing would be right at home, whether that's logical or not. From a design standpoint, I doubt they would nix an appearance of a vintage X-wing for any reason, if they wanted to see it in a scene.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Both the A-10 Thunderbolt and the Harrier were commisioned pre Star Wars and are still in active service today, if just barely. And like the X wings, they have been modified and upgraded for slightly different roles and with better tech, but they are easily identifiable . The beauty about what we have seen so far is that the producers have taken this same time period and they have extended it to the SW universe in terms of the story, the cast and the design asthetic . So it all appears to have aged at exactly the same pace as those of us who saw the original release of SW. Everytime I see and hear alittle more about this project the more I thank George Lucas for having had the guts to give it all up and pass the baton on, and to everyone at Disney and Lucasfilm for picking it up and running with it. Really I can't thank them enough.

Beware of the glitter bombs. She was glitter bombing us here in Calgary. Also, a few of us in the lineup were trying to round up her dog when he took off on her.

I took a look at the concept art... and I teared-up like Kevin Smith.

These new movies better act like Listerine and wash out the bad taste of those prequels.
