Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

That armour must be a nightmare to keep camera reflections off of.

I'm sure it was but at the same time there a lot of tricks for keeping reflections from showing, the simplest being using only certain camera angles. Plus, nowadays, it would be simple enough to remove unwanted reflections in post, esp. if you took the time and effort to hide as much stuff like lights and cameras behind scrims to minimize unwanted reflections as well making those that do show up that much easier to remove in post.

The other headache with that armor would have been trying to keep it shiny all the time. I'm sure that some PA or PAs were standing around set with soft rags and polish and/or Windex to touch up the armor in between takes. Then at the end of filming after GC gets out of costume I'm sure that the armor was polished and then at the beginning of the day when she's done getting into costume they're almost certainly polishing and buffing the armor.

Hey no one mentioned the thing that said Ford was actually excited to get back into the role. JJ assumed, like a lot of us, that Ford didn't like Han and had no interest in playing him again. I was kind of assuming we'd get a performance of someone who was just there contractually, not someone enthusiastic about it.

That IS surprising. He's always said there was nowhere left to go with that character. I guess "but what about that character 30+ years later" made the difference.

Yeah, in fact I remember seeing an interview before ROTJ's release where he said he was glad to "put on that vest for the last time", or something to that effect. So it's not like our belief that he didn't like the character came out of nowhere.

I got a Metropolis feel from her. Perhaps an homage to the movie since Threepio himself was somewhat of a reference to the Metropolis robot.

Could just be he's getting up there in years and feeling nostalgic.

Regardless of playing old, wiser etc characters, I think several of the actors had no interest in re-visiting SW until they saw Lucas was not going to be directing them, I'll bet anything that's one of Ford's biggest motivations. He only reluctantly did Jedi anyway - well, the dump truck full of cash the principals got also swayed him...

Lucas was infamously difficult for actors to work with and stories about this are legion. Even Hamill recounted one a few weeks ago at an event. Telling actors "do it again, but better" is not way a professional director deals with his cast. I know a few actors in the PT swore they'd never work with him again, ever.

Funny, when Lucas did SW in 76, his original plan for the series was to have other directors do each sequel, each with a different take. Of course when Sw made a zillion bucks, it changed everything.

One of the reasons I'm so hyped about these new SW movies is that everyone complained how awful Lucas' writing and directing were. Well, here's a fresh slate. Lets see what happens when others play with the SW toy box.

I'm sure the lack of George Lucas was a huge part of getting Harrison Ford back into SW. I would go so far to guess he might never have agreed to come back if it had been GL directing this new series. Ford is in his 70s and probably worth 100 million dollars. Even a dump truck full of money is probably little motivation for him now. If he's doing Han Solo again then it's because he wants to.

Which is what happened with Empire & Jedi, it was only with the Prequels that Lucas chose (poorly) to helm those movies after having not directed anything in decades.

He didn't intend for it to be a trilogy but a series, each with different directors, with different styles. But Sw exploded beyond any predictions, so things changed. He had to raise cash for Empire and get ILM started so he got Kershner to do Empire. Kershner, well, was the director who both filmed things meticulously and tweaked storylines *his* way. GL didn't like that and wanted more control. Jedi rolls around and Lucas is now trying to get Skywalker Ranch studio built. He picked Marquand -- but this time with the tacit understanding that even as director, Lucas still had final say. Lucas even filmed a few scenes for jedi.

Read Kaminsky's Secret History of Star Wars. Fascinating stuff. I don't mean to come off anti-Lucas as I'm not -- GL's decision to merge Anakin and Vader was inspired genius. But his SW and Empire crew contributions to make those 2 films the firm foundation of the franchise cannot be understated.

And that's why I'm so hyped for these films. It's a new crew, new writers and a new vision -- but still the same shared universe. Even one film does poorly, there will be others -- like the Marvel films.
