I whole heartedly believe a new trilogy MUST have an anchor to episodes 4, 5 and 6. It needs something like Luke as the head of a new Jedi order...it needs Leia as head of the Republic.....i know these have been ideas used in books, but for the films to FEEL like Star Wars.....we need that connection.
Rich
I agree. Luke and Leia is a must.... R2 and Threepio too but I would like to see many, many many more astromechs and protocol droids come into the fold as fulltime characters. Would be cool to see R2 team up with another astromech (kind of quickly done with Phantom Menace on the Queen's ship) and banter between Threepio and another equally quirky Protocol droid could be really fun. But they need to keep it in check... the prequels all but made Threepio a crappy cartoon character.
How is 30 years of service stretching it? There are automobiles and Heidelberg presses in service longer than that. Droids are tools... I have tools in my shed still being used that my grandfather used and they are just as useful and functional today.I really enjoyed R2 and 3PO as characters in the OT, but they became WAY over done in the PT, if the new stories are based on Luke, Leia and Han, then I'm sure they'll have the droids as well. However, the whole time I'm watching I'll be be thinking "these droids have been in service for 60 years?" LOL! Even 30 years of service, from the PT to the OT is really stretching it. How slow does technology advance in the SW universe? :lol
Well, they WERE sold as junk in E4 essentially.
Just because something newer and flashier comes along doesn't mean it's better. That could also be something addresses in the ST, Leia/Luke/whoever's reliance on old outdated droids.

You are associating real world earth technology into
a galaxy far far away. Artoo is actually supposed to be already over 100 years old by the time luke gets him. And threepio is a rebuild of who knows how old parts scavenged from who knows where. I don't think its a matter of how slow does tech advance rather than durable goods last. Protocol droids may not necessarily ever become obsolete considering how many languages Threepio said he could speak... he's useful for as long as he keeps his appendages! And the material they are made of may be completely different than anything found on earth.
They weren't sold as junk because they were old, it was only because they were "found" by the Jawas after escaping a battle. At the time both 30 yr old droids were in active service to a member of the galactic senate, and both seem fully capable of interfacing with computers of the OT era. So if we move ahead another 30 yrs in the story (a VERY cool idea) its going to take some effort on my part to ignore to 60 yr old tech in the corner. It would be funny to see Obama taking calls on a bag-phone from the 80's, or seeing a commadore 64 sitting on the desk of a senator
I have to disagree with the tool analogy, these are pieces of tech, not tools. We are both associating real world experiences to SW, lol after all it where we live! I doubt there are many Heidelburg presses that were built buy 10 yr olds from a scrap heap. I had no idea what R2's age is, where is that metioned?
:lol your avatar is well chosen! "when the world does right I speak for it, when it does wrong I speak TOO it!" ABI'd also hope that with these new movies that they might take a step away from the cadre of goofy alien Jedi characters. They're just silly and in my opinion worked to further erode the mystique and lore of the Jedi into saturday morning cartoon nonsense. What was alluded to with the OT hinted at a very Arthurian/Samurai culture and mythology. I'd really hope that they keep that aspect of things much more humanly grounded than indulge in the silly flights of whimsical nonsense that we saw in the PT. There are so many great actors who would make amazing Jedi Knights and Masters. Why squander those opportunities on goofy cg characters? Yoda was once cool but was then rendered goofy to the extreme thanks to taking him places with cg that he ought never to have gone. And, with the exception of Yoda, sorry, but I always imagined Jedi as human and gasp!...male. Sorry, the whole belly shirt wearing female Jedi thing is beyond lame. Knights, Samurai, they were men. May not be "PC", but then most of the coolest things aren't. Enough already.
Thanks a lot! as if a flying R2 wasn't enough, now I have to compartmentalized all that crap too! LOLagain you are associating real world tech and earth bound ideas... look at the technology and multiple worlds in that galaxy. There may have come a time where technology has been perfected to the point that its just a matter of physical design for aesthetics. Threepio's head and body were swapped out onto a battle droid and worked just fine. Maybe there just isn't any need to update since even the older technology works just fine and is still suitable for their needs... The battle on Kashyyyk there were large land vehicles with tires! Yet 30 years later the Empire uses large lumbering slow moving easily tripped ATAT walkers? :lol Speed would have been more useful in an attack on the only threat the Empire felt existed for them.
They still use hand held comlink communicators... that seemed antiquated to me in such a galaxy with massive amounts of artificial intelligence and technology. Why use a physical translator like a protocol droid.. shoudln't they have universal translators in their utility belts? Why have astromechs you can't understand... couldnt' R2 simulate language since he is technially able to make sound to begin with? how awkward to run around with an astromech if you can't communicate without another more awkward and large android to slow you down. In that galaxy most droids are so autonomous they do their job and function without the input of humans... they know what they need to do and humans don't need to interact with those tools and trust them to do their work as they always have. Look at Han rolling his eyes and ignnoring threepio when threepio tries to introduce himself in docking bay 94. Even to Leia Threepio was background machinery.... it was Luke that was weird and "cared" about his droids.
I like that there are old.., very old droids in their universe. Ancient weapons and blasters with recoil!

:lol not serious here at all, I just read Jedi-72's and saw Archie's expression next to it and it made me laugh and think of that quote from him.you are taking all of this way too seriously me thinks! :lol
Much of what we see in the SW universe is not logical, functionally beneficial or useful but certainly looks cool!
In my opinion they need to go less CGI and more practical effects wise. That's what really irks me about the PT they felt to cartoonie with all the CGI. The OT felt and looked more "real". Lucas also ruined the PT by interlinking all the characters with pointless back stories. Come on, in a galaxy what are the chances of everyone knowing each other.
I think as much as I'd love to see a whole new saga happen in episode 7 it's basically guaranteed that a Skywalker will be the main character.
