Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

A lot of the people in the industry now are in it because of Star Wars huge influence on their lives.

With a lot of them being such passionate fans, AND the George is no longer the head guy running the films the way he did the prequels, I REALLY wholeheartedly feel the next round of people taking this on are going to want to create an amazing film. I think there is definitely a TON of pressure being felt by all persons involved because expectations will undoubtedly high. EVERYONE will be watching like vultures on the progress of this film and I think they know they have a HUGE task at hand.

I would say give these people (industry pros, but also many who are passionate Star Wars fans) a chance to put together a film that goes back to the Kershner, Kasdan, Marquand days where they fought to do something a bit different than George wanted.

I can only see the franchise getting better from here.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

My clumsily-phrased point is this: I really don't care who directs this movie. Will I see it? Possibly. But all I expect from it is to be entertaining. The names attached don't mean much to me. Sometimes a 'nobody' can create a classic. A 'somebody' can, equally, create a dud. Anything in-between is equally possible. I'll let it speak for itself.

I think that in general, you are 100% correct.

There are, however, names that, if they wound up attached to something like Star Wars, would immediately suggest the worst.

Michael Bay comes to mind. Or Brett Ratner.

And there are other directors that are quality, but I just don't think are right in terms of tone. I don't think I'd have high hopes for a Star Wars film directed by Scorsese, for example.

In fact, I don't think I could name an "ideal" director at this point.

So in a lot of ways, JJ Abrams is probably a good choice. Sure, he's polarizing to many. That's fine. And there's a lot of room to screw up and **** people off with a franchise like Star Wars. But he's proven to have his moments, too. Give me a Star Wars film with the character connection of the pre-credits scene of Star Trek and I'll be ecstatic.

My biggest worry is that he's "too close" to the subject matter an he'll pull a Bryan Singer on it.

oooh! how about one created by Quentin Tarantino... kids would run out of the theater crying and screaming! :lol

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I've talked to several folks about Super 8 and it seems those that thought it was a sci-fi film didn't like it. Those that looked at it as a movie about relationships where the sci-fi component was more of a setting, liked it. I'm in that camp. To me Super 8 is the closest thing to a pre Schindler's List Spielberg film we're going to get.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I hated Super 8, but loved Star Trek.

Given what I've read about them not being super concrete on the release date, focusing on making Episode 7 the best film they can, I have confidence that they might just make a good Star Wars film. Nothing could ever live up to the hype. Ever. Even George Lucas himself couldn't.

The bar was set so low after the last three, that I don't honestly think I would be crushed if the new trilogy was terrible. It would be great to have some excitement in the theater again though. Sadly they churn out so much garbage that you rarely (if ever) get to see something that really stays with you.

Star Trek was fun, and if Abrams can pull off something as entertaining as that, with characters that I really cared about (which he did for me with Trek '09) I'd be happy.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

I just hope we get to see spacecraft from the original trilogy. It would be great to see the falcon, AT-AT's, and all the other cool ships that made me fall in love with Star Wars a long time ago.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

As much as i can rag on JJ, I can't really see HOW they could make a bad Star Wars movie.

Like the new Star Trek, and like others have already said, it's not going to be like the Star Wars we grew up with(those of us over 30) but I'm still hopeful it should be well done. Hopefully, the deal-breaker will just be how good the story is they choose.

I can picture it now.

through 80% of the film Han , Luke and Leia play sort of supporting roles. Not really getting involved in the action but more as advisors. At the end of the film (Theres always a big battle at the end of a Star Wars film) our old heroes must finally get involved and get their hands dirty. We see luke getting ready, and then han walking towards a giant hangar...the doors open, and the lights come on inside revealing the falcon.

Agreed.
I saw close encounters when it was first released and to me that was also very much a film about relationships, and chasing ones dreams. It just happend to take place in a sci fi setting. Super 8 delivered that same feeling. Im also in the camp.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Definitely want to see some classic ships. :):thumbsup

I hope not, at least not too many, esp. if the time is actually some 30 or so years later. By that mine most everything we've seen in the OT should be retired and replaced by a new generation of vehicles or at the very least about to be retired. 30+ years is a long time for anything to remain in service and we honestly don't know how old some of the designs are supposed to be in the Star Wars universe. Of course nothing, military, in the OT could be that old but still even if everything just came into service at the beginning of Ep. IV everything would be at the end of their service life and their replacements would have or are about to enter service.

The only exception to this would be if part of the plot has to do with the New Republic being poor and/or broke and having to still use all of the stuff from the Rebellion days plus Imperial stuff as well. However, I'd imagine that the New Republic would be very reluctant to reuse a lot of Imperial military assets since a lot of it would remind people of the Empire and its tyranny. The only thing that I could really see them reusing would be the Star Destroyers but repainted like the cruisers seen in the PT and relegated to rear echelon duties with newer ships having replaced them in front line duty.

As for the Falcon, I could see it still around in the new trilogy but with it being mostly hangar bound and/or the butt of jokes or a little ribbing about its age and condition whenever Han takes it out. Han could then make quips about how the Falcon has saved his hide so many times in the past and all that. Its age could also figure into a plot line where has to take Leia in the Falcon because no other ship is available or practical and there would be concern about someone as important as Leia being transported in what could described as a flying death trap by her counselors and/or aids.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Most likely scenario is they strip-mine the old Imperial ships to use as spare parts. I doubt they'd use them straight-up with just a repaint. Too many negative emotions connected with those for people throughout the galaxy.

I think it would be a mix of new and old... a majority of new (possibly a return to form but refined from the PT days) mixed with OT designs and ships still being in service or used by smaller traders and such, who cannot afford the new stuff.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

Huey helicopters are still in action, just with new internals. Same could be said for SW ships.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII

If they could just fix the Missile Boat's computer issues, that'd be the best starfighter in the galaxy.

Nonsense! Star Destroyers are like aircraft carriers. Aircraft carriers have a service life of about 50 years. F-18's are currently still in use, they're 30 years old. And on and on...

Also keep in mind that after the Empire falls there will undoubtedly be decade(s) long turmoil in which factions all over the galaxy will still be using the old tech because it's what's available. ;)
