Star Wars Obi-Wan Kenobi (tv series)

"Obi-Wan Kenobi...! Obi-Wan... Now there's a name I've not heard in a long time... A long time. [...] I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since, oh, before you were born." So he shoulda started going by Ben during the Clone Wars/during ROTS. There's no implication Owen hung than name on him or it's an "undercover" name for on Tatooine. Owen knows he is/was a Jedi Knight, so his "wizard" pejorative isn't from ignorance but dislike, as you indicate. We've seen a little of the bad blood in the comics, but I'm hoping that gets dealt with -- and well -- in this series. That Owen blames the Jedi in general or Anakin specifically for things, and that gets transferred to Ben.

I wish George had both remembered his own lore that he established in Star Wars and had (or had kept the sef-awareness to seek) the writing chops to paint his way back out of the corner(s) he painted himself into. And also that he'd given the story the room it needed to grow organically. Cramming the excerpts from The Adventures of Obi-Wan Kenobi into three films (and needing a whole separate series to cover the central event of the Clone Wars). Better handling of Yoda's appearance, of Anakin's fall, of the spread-out-ness of galactic events. The Empire had been a recent development as of the events of ANH -- like, within the last decade. Popular with some, unpopular with many who felt powerless to do anything about it. The Jedi purge had happened prior. And the Clone Wars, like the Punic Wars, were a series of related conflicts that spanned decades with lulls between flares. I would have been nice to have Obi-Wan start going by Ben somewhere in there, to maintain continuity with the one film whose story should remain the most inviolate, as everything since owes its existence to Star Wars.

So, now, when we have Anakin's fall, the Empire declared, the Jedi purged, the end of the (brief, singular) Clone War, the birth of the twins (whose existence as twins is spoiled, along with Vader's and Yoda's identities), and Obi-Wan (who has never been called Ben) going into self-imposed exile... all happen on the same day, "I haven't gone by the name Obi-Wan since, oh, before you were born" just got squeezed out.
He's also an old man who had his head knocked around quite a few times. His memory might not be what it once was. Just a thought.

So my memory is fuzzy but I seem to recall in the buildup to ROTS, that there was talk (rumors?) of a scene with Obi-wan and Anakin where there is a revelation that “Obi-wan” was actually a name given to him by the Jedi and Ben was in fact his real name. I believe Anakin teases him about it.

In the lore, I’m not sure how that would’ve worked because clearly Anakin’s name didn’t change when he became a Jedi. Presumably once the **** hit the fan, Obi-wan goes back to using his non-Jedi birth name. Regardless, this idea was dropped if there was any truth to it at all.

I was also always struck by how Qui-gon and Obi-wan had a similar structure to their names and wondered if there was anything to that. Maybe from the same planet or something else.

Well from a certain point of view........;)

I think he was prolly thinking on his feet.. he didn't expect to bump into Luke that day... he prolly made a lot up not only to protect Luke from the hurt but to soften the blow when years later Luke would find out..

Do we know Ben was an alias.. it sort of was.. he certainly wasn't being referred to as Obi Wan former Jedi Knight or Anything similar during his time on Tatooine..

Let's see how well and deep they dive without being too PM political with it..
I would imagine there will be some degree of torment loss shown as he's just witnessed one of his best friends and Queen die in his presence plus he also thinks he has killed his Best friend in cold blood..
For the greater good but still ..

so have we officially started b1tching about this yet? please let me know so i can contribute LOL kidding boys! ;)

Obi-Wan to Baby Luke: "Choose the lightsaber and you will become a Jedi."
Uncle Owen to Baby Luke: "Choose the fancy Landspeeder and you will become a moisture farmer."

Baby Luke chooses - blue milk.

This thread is in its relative infancy and I did do a quick search and don’t see this referenced yet. If it has been I apologize. There has however been lots of Luke talk….

I am going to make a prediction right now:Kenobi says “Hello there” to a boy Luke Skywalker.

I mean if Ewan doesn’t get to bust out that line I think all of us would cancel our D+ subscriptions on principle
