Re: Star Wars Ep7: REY'S BLASTER kit
Replied!
I was just wondering about print lines. The pictures are small so I cannot see the surface detail. How much clean up is needed. Do you plan on posting an image of a painted finished kit to see what builders might expect?
I print at 100 microns and slowly (which is why it takes so long to crank out a kit) to minimize print lines. I also employ a few other "tricks" during setup to get a better surface than what you usually see in this kind of print. That said,
any printed kit done on a filament machine will leave some trace of print lines. That's why I always use spray filler-primer instead of regular primer. (I model the parts to take this into account so that you don't lose any detail... and if you DO manage to fill in anything too much, you can bring it out again with a panel scraper or back of a scalpel.) My
personal preference is to work on prints rather than resin... partly because I hate the (toxic) dust and also because prints are almost never warped, are stronger and they don't have any bubbles. (I
hate, hate, hate filling in bubbles.) Here are some closeup surface shots of typical parts I've done. (All my stuff is the same quality, the main variable these days is if I print in gold or silver- they both give equal quality but sometimes the silver is impossible to get hold of!)
Here's a video of RPF member Cameron's great buildup of my map gun kit (above).
If you check my facebook page (click my sig) RPF Member Sean just sent me a photo of his buildup of my Firefly Jubal Early kit. Interestingly, he did NOT us spray filler but it turned out pretty smooth anyway. Also, if you look in the "props misc" album, the Split Second pistol, the batman props and the Oblivion Pistol are all printed projects I finished myself.
I've no idea when (or even IF) I'll have time to finish a Rey blaster for myself. I'm extremely far behind on personal buildups these days. The upside to Rey's blaster is that it's mainly flat surfaces- very few unreachable nooks. Poe's blaster will be a little more difficult.
