Star Trek vs Star Wars

Is this even a thing anymore? Tv shows and articles keep talking about the rivalry between these fans, but the last time I saw a fan of one actually put down the other fan base in a non joking way was in the 80s .

Nowadays we're pretty much all the same demographic aren't we?

is this trope really still a thing?

just curious. I ask because it's still made into a big deal by TV...the latest Big Bang theory...Will Wheaton is booed for wearing trek shirt at Star Wars. There's been a few FB posts going around about "How to **** off SW fans"...is this just a joke that ended decades ago and the media never got the memo, or are there still fans out there carrying on the rivalry, even in an era where they are both directed by the same guy?

A long time ago on a forum far, far away...


There was the Big Three: Star Trek, Star Wars, and Babylon 5. The rivalries between fans were legendary. The individual versus debates were done ad nauseum to the point where creating "Enterprise vs ISD", "Defiant vs White Star", and "Sith Empire vs First Ones" threads was an automatically bannable offense. Mashups were created as well, such as an upscaled X-Wing (three times larger) with White Star bioarmor, Death Stars with Shadow bioarmor, White Star/Defiant Hybrids with Vorlon armor, etc.

As with all things, the rivalries faded and peace settled across the land. The occasional upstart fictional universe will get some attention, yes, but eventually, it dies down as well.

Such is the nature of fandoms. Most of the "rivalry" is just for show nowadays.

I believe early rivalry really started with long time ST fans being critical of some SW fans for mistaking space opera with hard sci-fi. In truth I don't consider ST true hard sci-fi either.

Since JJ went from Star Trek to Star Wars isn't all the same now?

But there was a time:
Star Trek used to be more...... um..... intellectual...... thoughtful, matter transmission and capital ship combat.
Star Wars was mysticism, action, no matter transmission and small space fighters as well as capital ships.

Remember when Star Wars fans had.... well..... Star Wars. Star Trek fans got The Motion Picture. Which as time goes on seems better and better.

You cant compare Star Trek to Star Wars. Star Trek is set in the future whereas Star Wars is set in the past.

I loved both until Abrams got his hands on them. You see this in gaming too: you have the idiots fighting about Halo vs Call of Duty or some other idiocy. Who knows maybe SW and trek are in the same universe just at very different ends of a timeline lol

One is Sci Fi space exploration with social commentary.
One is myth/fairy tale set in space.

Ahh, yes...THIS argument.
Well, to answer that question is simple. A star destroyer hands down. It's not even a fair fight. First off, the Enterprise is a fraction the size of a SD. Second, the SD is a military arsenal built for the sole purpose of fighting and winning. The Enterprise is a scientific ship with some defense capabilities.
The fight would take about 30 seconds...and that's WITHOUT the use of it's TIE fighters.

But let's look at the big picture. If all of the players in the Star Trek universe teamed up and faced off against JUST the Empire. Same thing. The Empire would slaughter. Of course, the Federation and friends aren't total pansies. They have the Borg. Yeah but see, the Empire has the Death Star. One shot, goodbye.
Now, Star Trek does have one ace up their sleeve if you choose to include this. If you do, Star Wars looses.
The Q.
However, that's not hardware vs hardware, is it?
So it's pretty simple who would win.

I was just reading this to the wife while laughing.
She brought up the fact that the Death Star is designed to destroy a NON MOVING TARGET, like a planet. The Borg cube moves very fast.
I stopped laughing.
Okay, new plan. We take the Death Star out of the mix.
Yeah, Star Wars would still wins.
She also brought up the fact that ST has cloaking devices. True, but so does SWthough we don't see it in action.
She also brought up transporters. Yeah, but how will that help exactly? They won't go through shields.
Again, vader trumps the Federation.

What did I forget?

Ah, good argument, my friend. The wife tried to play that card as well. Problem is, SW happened " a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away". When exactly is that?
