Star Trek vs Star Wars

That's because ST hippie utopia is basically John Lennon's Imagine come to life.
No religion.
No money.
Ethnic diversity without ideologic diversity.

I think only partially, Roddenberry's point was we had evolved passed needing money and fighting over personal beliefs.
Hippies never were interested in exploring space though, having serious weaponry just in case and of course I didn't see too many Federation types getting stoned and tuning out.
We still had to deal with other alien races that were war like so it wasn't the hippie utopia reality out there in the galaxy, Trek found both friend and foe out there.

Only partially. I would agree.

The utopia to which I refer was really the Federation - especially the first season of STNG.
And the Feds claimed the moral high ground over other warlike races because of it.

The superior Federation tech and weaponry is simply a convenient contrivance to demonstrate that Fed values don't arise from fear of conflict. In truth a social system essentially devoid of economy could not generate advanced tech let alone weaponry to begin with. Economics arises from the natural shape of human nature. Where there are humans there will arise communities and economies.

Any utopia that depends solely on the collective good will of humanity is simply untenable.

Love both and always have. They serve very different entertainment needs!

However, right now I think people who are just Trek fans are pretty pissed because JJ messed up Star Trek and then knocked it out of the park with Star Wars. That hurts.
