Star Trek the Next Generation props

I was looking at some photos of the props from the STTNG series, and I was wondering who built these props for the show? I figured that you guys would be the best source for that info that I could find. The photos that I have, are possibly fan produced props, because they look a lot cleaner and sharper than any of the original "Screen used" props that I have seen on auction sites.

I heard a story, don't know if it's true or not, that during the first season, two brothers had gotten the bid to work up the props for the show, at only $40,000.00 for 80 props, the combadges, tricorders and phasers, and when these were broken or malfunctioning, the studio went back to the brothers, who now wanted $100,000.00 for all new props. So the studio went to someone else.

I also heard that possibly "modern props" had done some work for them, and also a company named "Proper FX" had worked on some of the props, later on in the series.

If anyone knows the real story, please let me know.

Yes, I knew that many employees from Proper effects went to work on HMS projects, and some went over to "Icons" as well. I just don't know who did the props on the first few seasons of Next Gen.

The HMS page tells you toward the top about other some of the contract work prior.

Well, it says at the top of their site that HMS came into being in 1998. I wanted to know who did the stuff from 1986 to 1990 or 1991. There doesn't seem to be any listing anywhere. There is no info on IMDB, and I cannot find out who did the props.

A few people did them some are no longer with us.

First year I lost the job to a person named Tom Homstead (Spelling) who worked on Airwolf with Andy Probert.

He created the powered opening tricorder powered by a key chain rewinder that was speed controlled by a set of flaps and it really made the clapping noise when it opened.

When they stopped using the self power opening tricorder for hand powered units the sound had become canon so the sound dept. ADDED it for the rest of the shows run.

I almost got the job for second season, but again lost out, but I don't know who did the props for 2nd season, and I believe Proper Effect which became HMS later to keep getting Trek work made a partner of Allen Slims (one of the prop masters on Trek) the S in HMS (Hortch, Moore, Slims) So he got a piece of the action for what he ordered..(conflict of interest??) Got most of the prop work from season three on.

They did keep as screen used, almost ever returned for repairs prop, later to resell them to collectors.

I believe the color changes each year was to help increase the value and help date each version of prop.

I remember many tracking these color changes season to season.

Rich, since you are so well known in the prop business, how come you did petition for your work to be added to the IMBD listing for STTNG? There is nothing listed there at all, not for Tom Homstead, or Allen Slims. It makes researching a specific topic very hard. You should do that.

Just my opinion, of course.

BTW, Thanks for all the info, that does point me in the right direction.
