He didn't change race. He was recasted. Khan's race wasn't vital to the character.

That's a COMPLETELY different discussion, though: Whether or not this is a "reboot" or an "alternate timeline." If the former, then any original backstory for any character is irrelevant. This is a new take on everything. If the latter, then yes, I agree that it makes no sense to alter things that would have taken place before the timeline branched.

Yes, the first JJTrek was spun as a new timeline, but I think we can all agree that the in reality the line between reboot and alt. timeline is pretty blurry.

Again, though, that's a different discussion. In terms of reusing "prime" characters, I have no issues with that, nor do I have issues with using them in entirely different ways from what we've seen before (which it would appear they are doing here). As a concept, I applaud that over merely trying to retell an earlier story verbatim. But like I said, the issue then becomes whether they told a good story with the characters. That is the billion dollar question and I guess I have a bit more time before I can find out. ;)

My only hope that he was being so secretive, was that JJ would lead you to think he was keeping it a secret because it was the one person we now know it to be, but that it would actually be someone else that we may have forgotten about in the original series. So, in a way the secrecy disappointed me because we all assumed that the villain was....him.

A little twist when you go to the theater thinking it's him and it turns out to be someone else, and you go, "OHHH WOW! I completely didn't see that coming and forgot all about that guy in the OS!" Now that would have been cool. Still looks cool, still going to see it.
 
I'm really bothered by the fact that we have to wait until june 9th, while in the surrounding countries there are premieres and it all happens halfway through may.
 
JJ: "It's a secret! We're keeping secrets 'cos they're cool! Look how good we are at keeping secrets!"

Had JJ merely come out right from the beginning and said, "hey guys, we've got this great new villain, John Harrison. You're really going to like what we do with him," no one would have suspected a thing. The audience would have really been truly blindsided by the ultimate reveal.

And you know what? I think JJ is probably smart enough to know that.

I wonder if he didn't suspect that if it really was a huge out of nowhere surprise if it wouldn't have ticked off fans even more. By playing coy with all of the hints about an established character, and making it the worst kept Trek secret out there, he lets us speculate and guess (correctly) and get all of our angst about it out of the way before going to see the movie.

Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit... :lol
 
So, do people have seen the actual movie yet? I really really want to see it, but.....I have to wait so long.
