Star Trek Into Darkness (Pre-release)

For anyone doubting the IMDB synopsis of the movie, here's a spoiler-filled (and very negative!) review from AICN:

Mr. Beaks Reviews STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS! - Ain't It Cool News: The best in movie, TV, DVD, and comic book news.

In short...Cumberbatch is playing who the leaks said he's playing.

I guess I'm just not sure why people are angry about this, though. Since the very beginning, and JJ's coy attempt at secrecy, the fans have been pretty much convinced that Cumberbatch was playing one of a very small handful of characters -- of which this was one (and the first name dropped in the rumors).

So despite all of the denials, it doesn't strike me as any great surprise. I never really seriously entertained the thought that it was any character BUT this one.

Disappointed? Sure. Mainly because of all of the coyness. There was no way it couldn't be a major, well-known character, or JJ's attempts at secrecy would have fallen completely flat and made people even more angry. The secret was spoiled the minute he made such a big deal of keeping it a secret.

Either way, this has gotten way off track and we should move back to the latest movie... where, IMO Karl Urban has a darn good job so far. ...and I told him so when he had dinner at my house last night. :facepalm

Dude! For the last time! I'm not Karl Urban! :lol

Completly agree, the efforts to keep it secret has worsened the backlash. He should have gotten in front of this early and often. Kathleen Kennedy understands this much better then JJ.

Is it wrong if I'm disappointed if the rumors are true? I was looking forward to this movie quite a bit... all the secrecy and misleading just seems so pointless and stupid if it is true.

If the rumours are true, then not only is the secrecy pointless and stupid, but so are their claims of rebooting so they can tell NEW stories.

Dude! I know I'm like totally 48hrs too late with this reply, but I just had to get this off my chest...

Because he was imitating Kelly - Kelly was the one who created McCoy, thus, he owns the character. Imitation at it's best is still just an imitation.

But remember Jet that imitation is the highest form of flattery.

Like those Biomimetic lifeforms from the Demon planet in Voyager "Course: Oblivion."

They imitated the entire Voyager crew, and even the ship itself was not real; just an imitation. They themselves were such perfect imitations that they were not even aware they were only copies.

They had never acheived a sense of individuality. They had no true purpose other than their belief that returning to Earth was their mission in life. When the further they travelled away from their actual homeworld, was in fact slowly killing them, .

In the end, all they wanted was to be remembered, however they were too late to even launch a probe containing all their logs and history of their limited, brief existence.

Those poor Biomimetic imitations! They didn't know they were ugly. :cry

Ok, now it's obvious you're just trolling this thread.

How is that trolling? Just because they use old characters doesn't mean they can't have a new story. It's definitely not the same story as Space Seed or TWOK. Judging by trailers/spoilers I would say it's definitely inspired by but it's still a new version/story.

Yeah, my take on it is this... at the end of the first film, they have a Spock who knows the next, what? 150 years of history?
I guarantee you that they debriefed him on anything that COULD be important and this particular mission was kind of pivotal, especially fifteen years later (from Spock's perspective).
It makes sense that Starfleet would run down certain bits of information that they would have recieved from Spock Prime.

I don't know that this is exactly fair. I mean, it's not like they created NEW characters for the crew of the Enterprise. So if Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc., aren't new, why the insistence that they create other new characters? In my opinion, pretty much ANY established character from the "prime" universe is fair game for the new movies.

Some of the plot outlines I've read suggest that Cumberbatch's character is actually being manipulated by other factors. If that's the case, then that is definitely a new spin on this character, in which case I'm completely fine with it (whether I think the story is any good remains to be seen, but that's neither here nor there to my approval of using an established character in a new way).

Ummm..

Why would Khan now be a white guy when the timeline changes occurred AFTER Botany Bay was launched? Why would Khan be ANY different? ***** ***** ******, Abrams never WATCHED Star Trek. He's just trying to take the GOOD elements of the series and repackage it and sell his **** as something new. HE FAILED.

Perhaps because
Khan was genetically engineered. He could potentially be from any genetic origin and still have the name Khan depending on where he was created. Don't get me wrong, I liked having a Hispanic actor playing... Middle eastern? Asian? Mongolian? but in reality, as an engineered being, he could look like anything. Plus, it's difficult to resurrect Ricardo Montalban and to de-age him. ;)
