Star Trek Into Darkness (Pre-release)

Yeah, the Vengance doesn't look nearly as bad in a physical miniature. I have the Reliant, Refit, and new Enterprise Hit Wheel ships here in my offices. Excited to get that Excelsior.

Meh, I am not sold on either of those designs, the Vengeance or the Bird of Pray. JJ has terrible taste in Starship aesthetics. As for the film itself I'll hold off on final judgement until I see the film this Friday. I'll give it a fair chance.

I definitely agree, JJ has very terrible taste in starship aesthetics. The Bird of Prey I don't like at all, it doesn't look particularly Klingon and barely looks Romulan, it looks more like something from some other sci-fi show. It's better than the Narada(sp?) and Spock Prime's time ship but only slightly better. Btw, what's a Bird of Pray anyway? Some sort of religious bird?:D

The Vengance is not too bad though and I agree with everybody on the resemblance to the Enterprise E, the only thing I don't like are the two big holes in the primary hull; what possible purpose could that serve? I suppose it could serve to reduce mass some but would it really save all that much mass in comparison to the ship as a whole and would it be worth making people having to go around those holes instead of just going straight across. You also have to wonder what they must have sacrificed in order to accomodate those holes: crew quarters, guest quarters, cargo bays, science labs, shield generators, holo decks?

The big thing that bothers me about the Vengeance is how rough it looks. And by rough, I mean how much like a blocky, low resolution video game model it resembles. It's like they stopped designing at the pre-viz stage and never smoothed out the lines. If it weren't for that, I could probably dig it.

Not sure about the Bird of Prey. I may like it better when I see it in action and without the toy-like paint job. It could make a cool model, perhaps.

I get the feeling is that was to further contrast it against the Abram's-Prise which is intended to be all sleek lines and sports car design sense. Like contrasting a feminine to a masculine.

Star Trek Collective has some picture of the Hot Wheels toy version of the USS Vengeance and the D4 Klingon Bird of Prey.

I think the Collective is right. She does resemble the Enterprise E at certain angles. The way her saucer section is built closer to the secondary hull and how there's a huge arrow like shape on the saucer section where the bridge is located at it's point.

The Federation named a ship "Vengeance?" That's not right.

And Abrams misspelled Jem'Hadar for that insect looking ship.

*Spoiler Free*

I read a review today a friend sent. He warned of spoilers but I read it anyhow because I've been hearing a lot of negative stuff around this movie. Unfortunately it did spoil some big stuff for me but I'm glad I know going in because it would be too much crap to deal with in the theater.

This writing team has burned out. They have been going non-stop since Lost and they've reached a point where Moore/Braga/Berman look competent.

So drastically lower your expectations and you may be entertained. But either way there will be a lot to bitch about Friday ;-)

Curious, as all my friends in the UK and US who share similar sensibilities and preferences as I do have all loved it.

Bottle opener?

You know... the more I see of this "alternate universe", the more I liken it to the way the Federation was portrayed in "Yesterday's Enterprise."

They were not the "Mirror Universe" "Evil" Federation, but rather a Federation that became militaristic out of necessity (which in that episode was due to a drawn out war with the Klingon Empire).

I've yet to see the flick. Hoping to do it this weekend. :)

Gonna see this tomorrow. Spending all day today on SYFY channel watching the movies than the 2009 movie right before leaving tomorrow

This does feel like a universe where the Earth and federation are far more militaristic, and to be honest it's probably closer to what would happen in reality. The vengeance is a neat design for a warship and that bird of prey is neat but apparently the klingons are vastly more advanced in this universe than the original.

Lot of that on the internet..and in this thread. I saw it today, posted my thoughts in the post-release thread. I LOVED it. I can't wait to see what he does with STAR WARS.

I think this thread is proof some people don't have to see it to declare their undying hatred of it.

Didn't say I hated it. Said I read a negative review of it. Go back and reread.
Having now seen it I fully stand by my assertion that these writers are lazy. It was entertaining but with lots of guffaw moments.

...and I didn't single you out in particular, but the thread as a whole. Go back and reread that!

I had the same reaction initially after it was over. It IS entertaining on a action/popcorn level. But I'm just disappointed they had to go THERE. Can't really discuss on this thread .. Time to move over to the other one ;-)
