Star Trek Into Darkness (Pre-release)

Oh my GOD! :eek

IT'S A DR. STRANGELOVE REMAKE!

That means that Cumberbatch is "Gen. Ripper", Pine is President Muffley... or Gen Turgidson... or Major Kong, and Quinto is Group Capt Mandrake! :eek

I LOVE IT! :thumbsup

Hehe. The new ship reminds me of the fake Enterprise design from the last film complete with open parts of it's saucer section, weapon turrets, spread out nacelles and missiles (Correction. Missiles was from the Galactica/Enterprise mashup).

Wait a minute... Is that war room surrounded by windows overlooking the city so anyone with binoculars can look inside? That's a stupid place to place a room like that. :facepalm

Ok. Honest views about the trailer. I didn't go into this ready to hate everything I was about to see, so expect some "not so angry" view points. It still annoys the heck out of me, but I do cut it some slack.

"I believe in you Jim"
Yeah, they're rehashing the last film. Pike banters with Kirk about his faults but can't stop talking about how full of greatness he is. If Pike utters "Your father" doesn't even mention Kirk's mother, I'm going to get angry.

"All out war"
I guess some faction is trying to start an all out war with the Klingons. A war against one ship and one man doesn't really come across as an "all out war" in my book. Maybe Harrison's attack of Earth will make an easier target for an invasion.

"Let's go get the son of a bi***"
While Star Trek certainly had it's share of profanity here and there, I'm not that much of a fan of it. Big meh on that one.

"You are a pawn, Kirk."
I don't know why, but I got some serious General Chang vibe with that line. It's delivered in almost the same exact fashion as "I can see you, Kirk". Maybe Benedict is playing the non-ridged Chang?

"The New Ship"
Does anybody remember when powerful and intimidating Star Trek bad guys used to command ships that were relatively weaker and smaller than the Enterprise? The Reliant was smaller than the Enterprise, as was the Klingon Bird-Of-Prey ("Why haven't they finished us? They outgun me 10 to 1!"). In the original prime timeline when the Federation designed a ship to fight the Borg, their final design was the Defiant Class starship that was about 1/7 the size of the size of a Galaxy Class Starship. Why is it that since Nemesis our heroes must fight a big, dark and heavily armed ship that just dwarfs the Enterprise? Come on, guys. Less is more.

"I'm sorry"
Sigh. Well, if you're going to start being likable, that's always a good way to start.

"We're outnumbered. Outgunned."
Ah, there's the Star Trek that everybody loves. Uhura being unsure and needing the men to give her guidance. Hey trailer, can you give us the Alice Eve in her underwear or her screaming at the camera? *Alice Eve screems* Thank you.

"Beyond the darkness"
Sound familiar?
"Beyond the darkness. Beyond the human evolution.... is Khan. A genetically superior tyrant. Exiled to a barren planet. Banished by a starship commander he is destined to destroy. Left for dead, he has survived.
Hehe. I'm surprised I thought of that. But no, that's not it.

"lies greatness"
JJ, Paramount, trailer department, for the sake of the part of me that's enjoying you so far, please don't-

"I believe in you Jim"
-and you did it far worse than I was anticipating. You actually used the same freaking line that was said earlier in this very trailer. If there's one thing I hate in all of Star Trek it's when it becomes a gigantic love letter to it's lead character.

That's the way it is for the new Starships. All you need is HAL and you can find out what everyone on the bridge is saying.

Can't say I didn't see that coming. I doubt they'll go the "father" route again but if they did it would be in character and perfectly appropriate. Think about it, Pike served with Kirk's dad and knew him. Who the hell else is he going to talk about? Obviously he didn't know the mother well because he wasn't exactly a family friend that Kirk knew his whole life. There is no reason that Pike would talk about Kirk's mom.

Kirk's father performed a selfless act that saved hundreds and Pike respected, even revered him for it. I'm sure Kirk's mother was a great woman but she isn't who Kirk aspires to be and she isn't who Pike is trying to motivate Kirk to become.

Honestly, when Kirk turned to the crew and said, "I'm sorry," I got chills.

Kirk never really became "human" until he lost Spock in Wrath of Khan. Like he said himself, he never had to face the no-win scenario before that. Frankly, I never liked Kirk from the original series. He was too one-dimensional.

In that regard, I think these new films are doing a better job of making him more interesting.

Definitely a cool moment. :thumbsup

Woah! Really? There are LOADS of moments in TOS where Kirk's humanity is revealed through his mistakes, conflicts, and interactions. Maybe we watched different shows?

So far my complaint with nuKirk is that he's a dick. I don't understand in the slightest how he can command the respect of anyone let alone his crew. It's something I hope they work on.

The bad guy's ship is bigger because if the visual cue in the trailer was something like this...

The audience would laugh their asses off. :lol

"We're outnumbered. Outgunned."

For all we know that could be the beginning of a pep talk she's about to give Kirk. But there you go again with the "misogyny in Trek." :rolleyes

Cumberbatch is trying to stop the insidious fluoridation of the water. :lol

If by Pep Talk, you mean Kirk responds with "So we come out shooting".

Still you don't address the fact that Uhura's "Out numbered, Out gunned" shot is cut off mid way. By the tone of her voice, it sounds like she has much more to say. There is also nothing to indicate that "We come out shooting" is Kirk's direct response to her comment. For all we know he may have said that "before" Uhura's comment, or he might be talking to someone else altogether; it is a trailer after all.
