Here we have the custom communicators. Thank you to everyone who participated! Please let the mods stick a poll on this BEFORE you vote! Feel free to leave comments. Voting is until the 31st with a winner announced Jan 01.

I am uploading these alphabetically by member name. I have included a little background information on the prop where it has been provided.

Thanks.

#1. From Contec. His inspiration came from a left over walnut! :lol

# 2. From Durrett A Klingon comm-badge.

Concept was a mix of old and new, The bit on the back is a rare earth magnet that holds it on clothing without making a hole.

# 4. Withdrawn at the request of NewWorld.

# 5. From NakedMoleRat

The inspiration was to make a cross between the TOS comm and the 09 movie version with the 'real world, lived in and used' feel. Look at the small display monitor under the moire ball, it is underneath the casing!

# 6. From Sporak Inspiration is as follows.

This is a chest communicator from the U.S.S. Endurance NCC-1862. The ship on the badge is a replica of the ship you serve on. The blue is for the science/medical division you work in. There would also be red and gold badges as well.

# 7. From Sulla

# 8. From TallestJawa

His inspiration is as follows.

It is my idea of a pre-TOS unit. It is a large version for extreme conditions (caves, bad atmosphere, etc.). Think of it like a phaser rifle instead of a pistol. Its features include an antenna booster and stabilization feet. I envision that it could be set up and left on a planet to use as an emergency transport enhancer.

# 9. From ZombieKiller

Description of it.

It is inspired by the TOS comm. The center has a wheel that turns above and its speed is controlled by the center knob. When it's just sitting there (receive mode) the front bargraph leds run in sequence starting with the top green leds and ending at the center red. When the red button is pushed (transmit mode) these leds turn off and the top LEDs flash. The red led flickers fast, the green flashes at a medium constant flash and the blue led flashes in bursts.

I love #8... very old school! I like #9 as well... a very clean build. Well done, gentlemen.

Kind regards,
Indy

Nope... your one is terrible, no little holes in the antenna! ;)

Seriously though, they're all quite good, though I'm not sure how a badge is supposed to compete with an all out hand-held communicator.

Indy

agreed, I was under the impression there were two categories, thus two votes. I guess there weren't enough entries?

in any case, would it be possible for you to make my images upright and rotate them 90' clockwise? Thanks NMR

But those are some sweet communicators that were made!

So sorry squirrel! Got it. i had to rename the pics and re-upload them to my hosting site to make it work!

Should have been obvious! :$

Thanks.

Really? I find it invaluable. Illustrator, too. Along with an 8-color, 5760 x 1440 dpi printer.

Whoa. Are you saying that the following photo is an ACTUAL photograph (untouched) of your communicator?

If so, that is one amazing printer. Not to mention one heckuva camera to get that field of depth with the crisp printout but the out-of-focus communicator around it.

Kind regards,
Indy

Thanks, it is. This was shot with a Nikon D7000, with hard focus on the printout which was printed on an Epson r1800. I ran an unsharp mask filter and boosted the saturation and contrast on the printout to match the actual prop.

And BTW, the color of the comm's shell couldn't be captured accurately by my camera, which is a common photo problem. So I color corrected the shot to match the actual paint. I thought the idea was to show off your item by making it look as good as close as possible to the original. Since I know how to make that happen, I did so. It never occurred to me that would be a problem.

I'm a professional photographer and designer. Vote for me, or don't. [EDITED FOR CONTENT]

I've been looking forward to seeing these entries for a while now.
I didn't have time to build one myself, unfortunately.
I voted for 8. Great idea behind it and superb execution - straight out of the 4th season of TOS! :D

Well if your going to be like that about it, I call BS and i can prove it real easily. Take your communicator outside and put it in your hand and show us the pic of it without cropping. I would bet the black marks on the side are photoshopped also. Funny how the prop pics are a little blurred but the graphic is razor sharp as is the side black parts. It's a bit dishearting thinking i spent countless hours stuffing 23 LEDs, 4-555 timers, decade counter, gear box w/motor,switch, pot and 6 CR2032 into a dirt bike swingarm and hand hammering a vintage reel to reel grill into the antenna and even using vintage coolshade . To think all i had to do is take a rock and photoshop a picture on it. If i send my prop to the mods it wll do eveything you see in the pics, will yours? This is one reason i wanted a video. Got any build pics? I documented my whole build with many pics to be posted after the voting is done.

Oops, didn't know I could include a description. I will toss it up here.

My communicator is #7. I had in mind that this communicator is a post-ENT, pre-TOS (probably closer to ENT.)

You can see this communicator is blue. I also have a gray and red one too. I was thinking they would be division specific, a design abandoned by TOS times as impractical. After the contest I will build a better flip lid/antenna for all three and post them up.

Good luck everyone! A lot of awesome entries up there!

Awesome stuff all around. Bravo!!! Love 'em all. #1 made me grin... #4 love the graphic... (Guess some folks don't get what depth-of-field is though) ... #8, the dish rocks!
