Star Trek Borg Cube

This 10" square Borg Cube was built over a span of ten months (approx. two years ago). The cube is made out of .100" styrene and has over 50 parts in it's basic construction. I wanted to light the model so I first drew out the open areas on the six sides and milled them out on a milling machine. Surface details are about 80% styrene with the rest being made up of steel washers, aluminum rivets, tubes and over 200 pieces of photo etch parts. The photo etched details were added with the help of the Micro-Mark Pro etch system.

Copper welding wire was cut up and bent into various shapes and added on all surfaces of the model.

I estimate that there are over 7,000 parts used in the construction.

The internal lighting was added by mounting 16 green LED's aroung the inside of the cube. The LED's are mounted to a 6" square that is mounted inside the larger cube.

The "Time Sphere" was constructed out of two Plastruct 2" half domes and was also internally lit with LED's.

The custom base was designed around a 6" Lumin disk mounted at it's center.

Painting was done with Tamiya acrylics over a grey primer base. Weathering was done with oils and Tamiya acrylics.

Although time consuming, the final model was well worth it!

Wow. What a beauty. Especially nice detail work on the "ejection hole". (Sounds like a euphemism for something...)

Thanks Captain. I forgot about the sound effects! I'm wondering if I can download the short movie I made. Any ideas? :confused

I noticed that there was another link started in '06 on the cube. Started by imaginager it had photos posted by Captain April from the Freeport model show also. I had no idea the post was there!

Now that is the best cube I have seen. I think the sphere is what really brings it into its own as opposed to just being..well a cube:) Very nice work man!

Great work JP. Check out the ILM Trek featurette on the new DVD/Blu-Ray set. One of the original model makers discusses building the cube and the last minute addition of the sphere port.

Once again - sweet build!

You built that?! I followed the build log on that a few years ago, and I was just thinking about searching for it the other day. AMAZING work
