Star Trek 2009 Starfleet Academy Class Rings

It will "blacken" all by itself?

I don't understand.

I have a few rings that have had the recessed detail "blackened" by a process in which a black compound of some sort is rubbed on the ring -- it adheres tot he smooth surfaces and then the jeweler buffs the black off the parts of the ring the black should not be on. In this case, that would mean that the black would only be in the recessed areas and not on the raised letters or circles, etc.

I figured you would be doing this.

I still want the ring if you don't, but please let me know if you can do this on your end as the ring pictured seems to have solid black in the recessed areas -- or am I missing something.

If entire ring is going to turn black, then I am confused about your statement -- if entire ring turns black over time, why would that be? Silver does not tarnish naturally, does it? The silver rings I have don't.

I can post pictures of silver rings I have that have blackening on them, if you need it as reference...but as you are a jeweler (I'm guessing) then you are likely well aware of the blackening compound and how it is applied and then buffed off areas you don't want it on.

Also, I see no difference in the fonts you used on new ring -- letters look just as thin as before.

Please know I will buy one from you regardless, but I was hopeful the new letters might be "fatter" to match the picture of the screen-used ring -- or wherever that picture came from, more closely.

I am amazed at how quickly you can turn this kind of thing around. Have you ever thought of doing a run of TWIN PEAKS BLACK LODGE RINGS?

What other rings have you done? Was there a TEAM ZISSOU ring from LIFE AQUATIC?

Here are a couple pics of a silver ring that I have that has "blackened" areas on it, if this helps.

Thanks to WhackyChimp for hosting pics.

from design to metal replica
my turnaround can be as little as 72 hrs
the font is a bit bigger sorry it is not as apparent
the blackening of recessed areas is a natural occurance the reason the outer areas do not blacken is that your skin and clothes or whatever buff the ring all the time.
are you referring to some sort of black enamel inlay perhaps?
that would be possible but would up the price by about ten dollars per ring
I love twin peaks so that may be a doable project
zissou too but that ring should look like a bubblegum machine prize. imho
i was hoping to make captain kronos' ring as well

yep that is easy enough to do
the blackening i mean
cool skull ring
essential to being cool and yet hard to find one that doesnt look juvenile

The blackened areas on my skull ring -- the ring came that way but when I had it re-sized by local jeweler, some of the black came off. He pulled out a tin of what looked like shoe polish or some such -- he rubbed it on ring and it stuck to ring until he buffed it off. It would buff off the raised areas of ring but not off recessed areas as the buffer didn't get down into the nooks and crannies.

I do not know exactly what this compound was, but I can try to ask him. If you do not have any, I guess I can take ring to him and have him blacken it for me. I think the blackening is needed not only to resemble the pic of the "official" ring but it also makes the letters and design stand out. I would also consider having it added to the inset lines on the sid eof the ring.

MEGATRON had blackening on his DR EVIL rings he made a few years back -- maybe you could write him and he can tell you what compound he uses to blacken silver.

I would be willing to pay more for this, if it matched the screen used ring.

I would be inf or ZISSOU ring -- and all the more if it looked like the bubbble gum ring!!!

The skull ring is a nice copy of one that Johnny Depp wears -- not a PRATES OF CARRIBEAN ring, but just one he wears day to day. Wish I remember who made it as I wouldn't mind having another.

I should have had you do accurate JACK SPARROW green emerald skull ring before I bought other replicas -- bet you could have done a nice job on that one.

it is just an oxidiser
no extra charge for it
i was thinking that perhaps you needed the recessed ares completely filled
yep a zissou ring would be awesome.... my wifes fave in fact.
but than i'd need a speedo and things would get ugly fast

oxidiser great -- thanks!

At the risk of causing a divorce, you MUST do the ZISSOU ring this summer. And I bet you look fabulous in the Zissou speedo. :)

I'll be watching the JUNKYARD for orders on the SF ring -- I'll confirm my size today.

I'll shoot you pics of Twin Peaks ring soon, in the event you take this on. Megatron did a nice version, but not sure if he still does them. It's tought o get good reference on this ring.

if it does cause a divorce i will be sleeping on your sofa in my speedo rest assured.
find me some good stills of the zissou ring to work from.
will start a thread in the jy soon

FYI, pure silver DOES naturally tarnish/oxidize. if you have silver rings that dont ever tarnish.... they arent pure silver, or they're coated with something. ALL my silver rings have to be polished every so often to keep their silver luster. i have a megatron ring that is black now because i havent polished it in...well...years. silver polish takes it right away though.

there is an alloy called super silver that almost never needs polishing
but yep he is right tarnishes like crazy
but not if you never take it off
all my daily waer jewelery is either silver or white gold
and it all looks shiny and i never polish any of it

I just use plain old toothpaste to polish my silver. It takes almost no time at all. I can take an almost all black ring, some toothpaste and an old toothbrush and it looks as good as new in about a minute.

Ring looks great! Nice job! What program are you running? Rhino, Digital Gold Smith? The renders don't look like Matrix 6 models. Are you running it on a Revo mill?

I'm guessing the "super silver" you mentioned is Argentinium silver. Is that what you're using? I'd suggest a standard Sterling Silver and use Black Max oxidizer to get the black inlay look. Liver of sulfur sucks and smells horrible! I've gotten the best consistent results from Black Max, it gets that nice dark black look. Just leaving a ring to oxidize by itself won't get the results that the real rings have, it'll just look like a dirty unpolished ring. And it'll be more of a dark brown rather than a true dark black.

In the time limit you did it in, you did an awesome job! I haven't messed around with the Class Ring maker in Matrix 6 yet, but I'm playing around with a few ideas!

I would suggest against using toothpaste to clean your silver, it's an abrasive, just go get a silver jewelry polishing cloth. They're cheap, last a LONG time and not as messy.
