Star-Lord Ensemble ( Con photos, page 6 )

Re: Star-Lord mask ( update on page 4 )

Mmmm primer. So rewarding. Looking very good.

I used the Tamiya gunmetal which IMO is the closest I've gotten my hands on so far. I feel that the helmet color changes quite a bit on screen from prop to model. But going off of BTS prop pics the helmet is a very cool medium dark silver, and the closest I've seen in the real world is one of Honda's silvers used on their newer Accords (among others I'm sure). Hard to track down actual paint numbers, but the closest I've come to that is either their Modern Grey Metallic or Dupli-Color's Exact Match line in Polished Metal Metallic. Model BHA0990. I'm hoping to give the latter a go as soon as I can find it locally.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( blasters and updated helmet starting on page 3 )

looks great......

Re: Star-Lord mask ( update on page 4 )

Also forgot to mention that my Soundlab headphones came in! These things are incredibly shoddy in quality, but I can't complain since they were only like 4 bucks. They may not be the ones used in the film but they look the part.

I also ordered a set of TPS-L2 Sony/Walkman decals on etsy. I've given up looking for a real TPS-L2, I'm just going to scratch build one.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( blasters and updated helmet starting on page 3 )

Got my updated helmet in primer. Glad I took the extra time to fix some issues my first finished one had...this one is much cleaner!

I would say it's almost ready for paint, sans a few problems areas that need a patch of putty. Now I just need to attach the tubes, and find my paint colours. Anyone found any close rattlecan paints that match the hero helmet? I've been having a difficult time sourcing anything I like.

More to come.
What kind of putty would you us on something like this? I am having to do some customization to a helmet I bought and I don't know what type of putty to buy.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( update on page 4 )

Started working on my TPS-L2. I really want an original, but I just can't justify spending the amount they're going for online . But hey, we're all replica makers right? IT'S OUR JOB TO REPLICATE THINGS. How hard can it be to replicate a little box with buttons?

Harder than I anticipated, actually. In fact, I had to scrap the first Walkman I started building because I realized, after building most of it, that it was at least 1/4 bigger than a real TPS-L2. Pic below for reference. Notice how HUGE it looks compared to my hands.

15655437582_06f0a3323a_c.jpg

Either way, it was good practice and it provided me with a few ideas on how to improve the V2.

For my V2, I started off with blueprints/reference images that were scaled to the approximate size of a real TPS-L2. I did about two hours worth of planning and note taking before I jumped into building the V2, since there is little room for error when you're building something so tiny! Everything has to line up perfectly. In the planning stage, I decided my V2 would be 2 separate pieces. More on that in a sec.

And here are some notes that inevitably make me look like a crazy person.

15655290316_3a99ed9d4c_c.jpg

The base of my TPS-L2 is 1/2 inch MDF. I needed something smooth and perfectly level - plus, MDF is fairly cheap. Win win!

15059064174_3a5f6398ef_c.jpg

Then two slimmer pieces of MDF were superglued on top of the base...

15493611928_5191210f30_c.jpg

And squared up on my chop saw.

15677072101_d3be2e54cf_c.jpg

Afterwards, these thin styrene walls were glued onto the MDF to line the tape bed.

15655273356_b311db35b5_c.jpg

Thicker pieces of styrene were then used to raise the walkman to its appropriate height. ( approximately 2.8 CM )

15494188260_dcc5f81c79_c.jpg

The thinner barrier pieces of polystyrene were then sanded flush with the thicker pieces.

15680565142_c24d1b5bbc_c.jpg

Then I used my chop saw to square all of the edges and remove any excess styrene.

15677039631_461e154fca_c.jpg

Next up, the buttons on the right side of the walkman!

15493082499_ef144cab4c_c.jpg

These were built with trimmed pieces of strip styrene.

15494153750_243504777a_c.jpg

Are they 100% accurate? No, but i think they look the part.

15655229386_2773c90d9a_c.jpg

15680533722_b1ab95b823_c.jpg

Next I started constructing the outer walls of the tape bed.

15677008991_5ea59cae3c_c.jpg

AND NOW....FOR THE MOMENT OF TRUTH.......

15680519532_ce3f5bab2a_c.jpg

IT FITS!!!! WOO!!!!

Well, that's it for now. I should have it finished by tomorrow, because there's really not that much left to do. My decals came in today, and I will be ordering my silicone to make the molds this week.

More to come!

Bondo filler and Bondo spot putty. You can get it at automotive stores.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

How much would a cast cost? I have been looking for the closest helmet to the movie for a cosplay event, I was hoping you could tell me a price with shipping?

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

I was going to ask a question with the answer posted already earlier in this thread but I thought "2 soon"... lol

Nice work on the tps-l2 build to bad all the work of the first one wasn't sized good...maybe work for those 8 foot star lords kicking around, lol

Soz dude, read the whole thing, anyway it is a freakin awesome build, keep up the good work!!!

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Made some more progress on my Walkman. Added the bottom panel to the tape bed and thickened the side walls.

15520794049_80a33709de_c.jpg

Had a few minor scuffs and scratches that had to be filled.

15682917596_862aaca866_c.jpg

Then I turned my attention to the second piece of the sculpt - the cover for the tape. First, I glued together two pieces of thicker styrene and drafted out where the acrylic cutout will be.

15087297463_7b18d83ae6_c.jpg

My scroll saw was used to roughly cut out the opening.

15521813790_330c630c88_c.jpg

A Dremel (with sanding barrel) and various grits of sandpaper were used to clean up the edges.

15682922396_078c660678_c.jpg

One of the details I had intentionally left out until the bulk of the build was finished was the little orange button that sits on the main frame of the TPS-L2. This was made out of, yup, you guessed it...styrene.

15086684914_6a2e8f7e8d_c.jpg

This was then glued on top of the master sculpt.

15521434137_826b133a99_c.jpg

That's it for now. Next step is to finished the cover for the tape and give everything a coat of primer.

More to come.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Before I gave it a coat of primer, I decided to add 3 small details that are present on the real TPS-L2; The screw heads on the left side of the Walkman.

15106527503_dc08a1d5af_c.jpg

These screws were stolen from an old Panasonic wireless phone. Ideally, I would've liked something smaller for accuracy sake, but these work just as well.

15541053190_12fb8c836e_c.jpg

Finally time for some primer.

Fairly pleased with how it's coming together. Also, as I mentioned earlier, my decals arrived!

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Finally got my decals applied to the tape cover and everything lines up well!

However, I am going to replace the vinyl decals with laser cut acrylic plastic SONY & Walkman logos. The vinyl decals are nice, but I'd like something thicker and more pronounced to save time later when it comes time to paint the walkman. I've recruited the help of someone I know who has a laser cutter to cut the logos out of 0.060 acrylic...hopefully they show up soon, because as soon as they arrive it's time to mold this thing!

More to come.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

I love the Sony Walkman scratchbuild very cool.
Those decals are great.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Just a heads up, I have started an interest thread for the Walkman I'm building in the project runs section of The Junkyard. If you are interested in obtaining a copy of my TPS-L2 for your own collection, check out my thread.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Made some more progress on my Walkman.

I had some old silicone in my studio that I didn't want to waste so I decided to make a preliminary mold of the tape cover.

15228324353_cf363cb78a_c.jpg

And here is how it fits on the chassis.

15847353262_66cf60b1bb_c.jpg

I've ordered more silicone to mold and cast the chassis; I'll be picking up my order tuesday. By the end of this week I should have a full resin kit to start working with.

More to come.

Re: Star-Lord Ensemble ( TPS-L2 scratch build started on page 4 ))

Spent a few minutes tonight working on my helmet. Managed to get those front tubes attached.

15871578711_4d40f5fd0c_c.jpg

And I also gave the TPS-L2 chassis its last pass of primer. Molding will commence on Wednesday or Thursday.
