It's not exactly "screen accurate", but I was under a 4 day deadline with the movie coming out tonight. I'll finish a more accurate piece in the future. Thanks for looking guys! I'm going to go see GOTG!!!!!

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Even having 3d printed pieces made to save alot of time that was some quick building.
Look forward to seeing your hero/screen accurate version.

Edit, i forgot to ask my question;
Regarding the weathering on your helmet, how do you do the silvery scuff marks, mainly noticed along the edges?
Thanks.

Absolutely stunning! There's definitely going to be a huge following on this thread in the next few days, given how successful the film has been! Really awesome :)

I took a stiff paintbrush and dipped it into some silver/chrome paint, then I used a paper towel to remove most of the paint off the brush. Once most of the paint was removed, I gave all the edges a light dust with the paintbrush. I believe it's an effect called dry brushing, there are videos on Youtube describing this technique in better detail.

Ive heard of the term before, Dry brushing, just not looked into what it was exactly.
Thanks for the explanation Crank.

Hey sorry about the C&D from Marvel, that sucks big time. But would you consider selling a copy of your 3-D file of the helmet, strictly for personal use not commercial in any way.

Just enjoy the build. A C&D means Cease and Desist, and tends to be fairly all encompassing.

This is an awesome build we can all learn from though. Plus, in my experience, Crank729 has shared his techniques and process fairly openly. So if there is a question you have about how he got his results, post it up so we can all learn from it.

Otherwise, there are other places to get 3D files for this helmet.

Nick nailed it on the head. As much as I'd love to distribute castings and 3D models of the sculpt for fans to enjoy, I'm not at legal liberty to do so. Nothing I can do to change that.

Besides, I personally believe that Helagak's 3D model of Starlord's mask is as accurate ( if not more so ) than mine. And it's free! Hard to beat that.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Literally just made an account to comment on this post, this work is AMAZING !
I'm trying to build Quills mask myself right now, and I'm looking at all the pieces people have made, and this is by far the best. I feel super hopeless now after seeing that :D

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Hey there fellow Canadian! I don't know the rules about offering to purchase stuff, but if you told me how much it would approxamatly cost you to make me one and ship it. I would love to buy one. I don't have any cosplay skills except very basic stuff. So I would gladly pay for something this awesome.

Nothing is for sale here. Just enjoy the build!

Don't feel hopeless. Check out Crank729's post history. He didn't get this good overnight. It takes time. Just set your eyes on a goal and start working towards it. Your first few projects won't be perfect, but they'll help you get the skills to eventually make something awesome!

Best of luck and welcome to the forum!

What thread did he post that?

What thread did he post that?
It rarely leaves the front page of the Marvel forum. Just look for a thread by Helagak on the front page that relates to Star-Lord.

Also, please use the search function in the future. You can search by member.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Been working on this project for.....oof, a LONG time. Last year at San Diego Comic Con, they had this large display of props that were from Guardians of the Galaxy.

Once I saw this mask on display, I knew I wanted to build it. I contacted my friend Jacob Morin (who goes by jtm1997 on TheRPF) and asked if he could whip up a 3D model for me.

He DEFINITELY delivered.

Some of the finer details were harder to hammer out since we started working on it back when very little reference was available. Photos from the back of the mask were basically nonexistent. Some of these details we jest winged in the end.

Fast forward a few weeks and the 3D print arrives at my front door.

Lots of pieces. Lots of sanding. LET THE FUN BEGIN.

The pieces were glued together with Gorilla Glue Epoxy. Dries rock hard, and a little goes a long way.

The 3D printed pieces were quite brittle and flimsy, so I used some urethane resin to strengthen the helmet.

That's where I'm at. 6 days until the movie premier, and I fully intend to wear one to the movie. Wish me luck!

You said that the 3D print arrived at your door and then you did everything else. Where did you send it to be 3D printed? IM me, if you can't say on the forum.

I know someone who owns a Makerbot, he printed it for me.

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Hello there!
I am completely new to this and I need help! Lol!

I've been contemplating sculpting Star-Lord's mask for some time now until I stumbled upon this website and your thread.
I never even thought about 3D printing it until now, but it totally seems like the most efficient and correct way!

I've read that you had your friend render a 3D model and 3D print it for you...Which is my first question:
Where would I go to get this helmet 3D printed? I've checked around the web, but I feel like I'm finding the wrong places and doing things wrong in general!
I tried uploading Helagak's model to Sculpteo.com, but all I got was a single piece of the helmet and I was totally confused.

I understand most of everything else that you've done, but I'm just literally stuck on obtaining an ACTUAL 3D printed model of this helmet.
Does your friend do 3D printing services? That would be ideal if he does! Or just...point me in some correct direction to a reputable 3D printer service ;3;

Thank you!!

Re: Star-Lord mask ( with the help of a 3D printer )

Shapeways.com is the most prevalent. There are others out there, including local maker/hackerspaces. Check in your area to see if there are any out there
