ST:TOS Remastered Xmas Gift Hell

My girlfriend's parents gave me a perfect surprise gift - at first sight - the entire TOS. But closer inspection revealed it was the remastered version - all original FX shots butchered and replaced with cgi. But the most infuriating thing was, the title on each disc gives absolutely no indication that it is the remastered version; the title simply reads 'Star Trek The Original Series'. What chance did my GF, who made the order online, have of avoiding the remastered crap if there is no indication of remastering in the title? Does the unstained version even exist any more?? Why can't they just leave these masterworks alone, the wrecking, vandalising, iconoclastic *********s!!

The Bluray sets have both versions, original and re-mastered. What did you get, DVD? I wasn't aware they were only offerring the remastered version (without the original versions).

DVD. So, do you reckon the unmolested versions could be in there too? Don't want to open it up in case I have to send it back... I'll go see what I can find about it on the net...Cheers!

Yeah, when the announced the remastered DVD versions, I snapped up the old "communicator" shaped boxes of the originals. I've seen some of the remastered shots and they look nice, but in my opinion they don't "fit" with the overall feel of the show. I prefer the old model shots, actually. So, knowing that, I grabbed all three seasons.

You're looking for these, basically:

Amazon.com: Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete Seasons 1-3: William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, George Takei, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, Majel Barrett, James Doohan: Movies & TV

I'd figure Ebay would be a good bet. I expect they're discontinued at this point.

OK, I just looked on amazon, and the DVDs I have contain no original episodes, only remastered, yet the product makes no mention of this in the title - and even if it did, to a layman, 'remastered' could simply mean image upgrade, as opposed to the removal of original footage.

Im a bit confused.
Are you upset about the remastering or the the CGI FX?
THese are two different things.
Remastering is simply using digital process to get the best sound and picture, such as cleaning up the film, sound etc.
Basically a sharper more colorful picture and crisper sound.
It has nothing to do with replacing FX with CG or removing scenes, etc.

Only the Bluray version is remastered AND ALSO has the CG FX option (which means you can press a button on your control and watch the show with the original FX or the updated CG FX).

I believe the DVD 2007 version is remastered and the 2004 DVD version is not...But neither of them have CG FX option.

I own all the dvd boxsets both original form and updated/remastered.

The 2007/2008 dvd boxsets do have updated CGI FXs and no original effects.

As far as I am aware they are the only TOS dvd sets being produced (or still abundant as old stock). The original form sets are no longer around.

The Season One boxset is still being sold as a dvd/ HD-dvd combo set! :wacko

Ah it's time to upgrade to Blu-Ray anyway right...

I have the blu rays and it has both versions. I'm. Not sure what all the fuss is with the new fx though. By and large they did a pretty nice job with it. And as someone pointed out the remastered live action film and sound looks pretty flawless... For a gift it still AWESOME :D

The film and the TV series are lightyears apart in terms of FX. Mapping CG into the film is one thing. Mapping CG into the TV series is something else. I watched some of the episodes when they aired them on TV (Spike? G4? I don't remember which channel. Not Sci-Fi/SyFy, though, that's for sure...), and it's not that they look BAD, it's just that they look...sort of out of place. Everything ELSE in the show is still "low tech." Like, the sets, the props, the costumes, the makeup, the lighting, etc. All of that is "late 60s TV show" quality. Not bad, just set in its timeframe. So, you've got all of that.....and then a shiny new CG model of a planet with the CG model of the Enterprise flying around it and filling the screen, instead of being a plastic model shot from a distance.

Again, it's not bad looking. Actually, it's quite pretty. But to my eye, that's the problem. It's TOO pretty when set against everything else. They do a good job of making it as natural-looking as possible in context, but they can only go so far. This is why, I think, the Blu-Ray is probably the definitive set to have, since you have the option of "new" or "old" with the push of a button. Assuming, of course, you have a Blu-Ray player and an HDTV, which I don't.

Well, Star Wars fans do, too. You've got "crappy non-remastered Ebay bootleg quality Laserdisc transfer" and you've got "latest manipulated version Special Edition."

I want to watch as-broadcast Trek. I watch these shows from a TV-historical perspective. In addition, I happen to love the original model shots. Trek for me is a nostalgia trip, baby food to comfort - what our local vid-rental store owner calls 'Trek therapy'. New cgi footage, no matter how brilliant, is therefore worthless and distracting for my TOS viewing needs, and every original model shot lost is a bereavement.

Agree 100% I have the blu-ray's which have both the original and the new CG effects and I NEVER watch an episode with the new effects. They are distracting and to me in most exterior shots the ships look like cartoons; nice but cartoons. I don't understand whey they didn't fix the scratches and dust specks on the original effects though (oh, yes I forgot; so they can release another version with the original effects cleaned-up).

Thing that bugs me the most about the Blu-Ray set is they put the in broadcast order. Yecch!!!

Production order you see a progression of the characters and production values, that gets a little jumbled in broadcast order.

Can't believe they didn't do that for the Blu-ray release. I haven't bought them yet, but I thought since they have the old original effects and new CGI effects, both versions would be cleaned up to be acceptable for a Blu-ray release.

I am happy with my 2004 DVD set for now.

Yes, that bugs the hell out of me too!!!
