I want to make a SS Y-wing with all the body panels on it,
i saw it in the cross sections book and thought it was to
cool! I want to vacuum form as many parts as I can, I will
use the engine bodies from the Saturn V kit......and what ever
else i can find.
I want to light the cockpit and engines and have the Ion
cannon on top rotate......because it really pisses me off
they never used it in the movie, while they got their asses
shot off in the trench!:lol
I am going to use the little F-toys Y they made one with
the body panels, along with Revell's recent offering....which
needs to be scaled up to around 3.4 times to get me right
near SS.
I have a lot of this under way already i will post
pictures today or Sunday!:thumbsup

I think it looks far better then the clone wars version.

Well this reminds me an early morning liason, and a promise i made, once upon a time........Michael, lemme go grab those calipers :lol.

So it starts as paper templates........

The idea is to have a top and bottom for each part.......main body, neck, cockpit. This way i could prove the parts will work once they are vacuum formed. Thats a lot of work so I decided to make mold boxes out of the main
shapes and pour ultracal30 into. Thanks Al for getting me to use it only took
me 6 years! LOL

It doesn't matter how crappy the outside looks.....were not forming over
that anyway.

But the inside better be smooth because the ultracal picks up
everything, it actually picked up the pencil lines drawn on the inside of
the plastic on one of the neck pours!

Does the ultracal get hot.....Yea it does i shot this with the laser at work
121 deg

And here are the happy top and bottom main hull halves......
017.jpg

Ok to be honest i did plan on forming over the out side......LOL
So when pouring to the inside i lost the corners......:lol

Figured frame it up put some little rebar in there AKA
small brads and pour in some ultracal...
018.jpg

And that worked but i didnt like the feel i was getting trying to shape it
in those areas, because there is a lot of angle going on there.....

So i busted it out and decided to use the Apoxie Sculpt there.

Now to make the neck so we can blend in the shoulders to it,
when the neck parts are finished.

Neck template..... again crappy on the outside clean
on the inside.

Ok so here are the two main hull parts top and bottom with each
one getting a top and bottom neck part.
013.jpg

Now the tough part....well not tough but ya just got to be careful....:lol
Blending in all the shoulders and stuff.....it's not that complicated so i
call it stuff!:thumbsup

I put some tape wherever I don't want to sand....

Anyway last post i forgot to mention it's a good idea
to put the halves together before sanding to get every ting
marked out..:lol:thumbsup Because it's better you see if its
wrong on the top and bottom......at least it's all wrong
and it will work......rather than have one half work. Because
when you form it joining the halves is a issue!:lol just kidding
it will be perfect on the top and bottom!

So yea you get all that sorted out it looks good .......
then your a star on the RPF! :lolLOL

So how about a cockpit? I kept looking trying to find the right
picture that would help my dense mind realize the shape in regards
to the keel line. I finally found a drawing in the Big bible book with
that helped the one with the pilot seated in side the Y-wing. Do I have
it perfect who cares.....LOL I didn't even put in any cross sections just
a profile and a keel........I'll use the force for the rest!
031.jpg

Told you the force was real! We don't need no stinki'n
cross sections waste of beautiful styrene anyway!

A little sanding and she will be perfect i promise.......but
that's for the next update!:thumbsup

Dude you have been busy it is looking awesome so far you know I have to come up and see that when it's done with your Batmobile, Vac-Man! Lol a new Super Hero with his mighty Vacuum former :behave.

I am going to be following this project with....great enthusiasm. I've been slowly plugging away at a profile drawing of the Y-Wing and one of the things I've wanted to do since I started the project was to do that paneled Clone Wars one (the bomber one from the show was pretty meh). Keep up the great work on it, I can't wait to see it finished!

I always have liked the Y-Wing with the body panels. Nice to see it getting some love. The Clone War's one was alright - but nothing beats the classic design.

As far as not using the ion cannons....yeah...thats always bothered me too.

Looks great so far! Cant wait to see more.
