SS Y-Wing Yea the one no one wants to make?

do a Naked B wing. you know the one. no armor with all the parts showing. LOL

Yea a reverse B-wing......your such a ball buster! LOL

Here is the wing it's strong made it out of
4mil styrene it will be hollow so I can run
the wires through.....

Now thats great! Looking forward to see it finished. :thumbsup

Thanks Naz!

Working on sanding all the parts to get a better
fit.....still have some tweaking to do but much
better already.

Lee said around 8mil total maybe......thanks Lee.
So each half will be 4mil, i used a piece of 4mil
evergreen strip and just marked the line all
around the inside. Then i just dremeled it away
and sanded each half until they fit smooth together. If you look down
by my wrist you can see how thick the plastic is.

Before sanding.......
003-3.jpg

After......
006-3.jpg

The lower half of the cockpit should have a lot less meat
on the sides, so I have more sanding to go.Not sure how far I can
go before it wont work with the top? I think i will be ok though.....
before sanding....

After....
009-4.jpg

it still looks a little vacuum formed.....it will change
once i start sharpening up the angles.....

Looking good there Mike and I like the photo, I always looked at this day as somber one not to be partying like the fools across the street with the loud spanish music which I hate and I'm spanish Lol, they probably never served in the military all my brothers and I all 4 of us were Army, my older brother has 20-25 already going for the 30 to retire.

Your most welcome and your right....thats what
the day is really all about!:thumbsup

I am not going to use the plastic for the wing......
i will use some plywood and laminate it:thumbsup

Well I had to do some cutting of the sides that went pretty
well.....then I cut out the opening in the cockpit and installed
the canopy and sharpened it up.

005-4.jpg

003-4.jpg

then I got the panel lines drawn on and scribed.....
006-4.jpg

007-2.jpg

Next time to make the flat sides that I had cut away earlier.....
009-5.jpg

Switching to the wing .......i decided to do it all in wood and laminate
in 1 mm styrene! I ran a rabbit joint across so i could route the wires
from the engine cans....and later laminate with the styrene.

011-3.jpg

I still have to make the bottom of the cockpit.....it has a very small
sides compared to the top section.....i can use the second pull of
the hull I made to get the bottom section.

Mike maybe its my eye, but shouldn't the side kind of get wider towards the end and narrower towards the front ?in the pic it looks parallel from front to back.

I believe that´s just the Red jammer head. The sides of the head of the gold Ys have an almost constant height.

Then again, I don´t think Mike is going for "studio accurate", the canopy should be wider and more flat, and the lower head should be made from a new master as it doesn´t have the same curvature as the top.

Mike, I hope you just keep building it, looks awesome so far. You make that vacuforming look so easy...

Studio accurate......Nah I havent looked at the studio model
since I started making it. :lol

Is there that much difference between the top and bottom of the cockpit in regards to curvature?Obviously the bottom has no sides like the top hull does that drop down......but the shape overall doesn't look that drastic......I don't know i didn't study it that hard. :lol I know if i was making this thing for the first time I would use the top hull shape for the bottom and just trim it down.......that's how I am making mine, I don't plan on using another entire pull just like the top and gluing it to the bottom.

Ok I made some changes on the angle here .......
004-5.jpg

And another change to the lower hull ......where
i totally missed the angle that slants upwards.
002-8.jpg

All together now......
003-6.jpg

The lower hull's neck will actually be 2 ply thick......
I will have to sculpt in some clay coming off the angled
part to match it up.

I wanted the neck to be incorporated into
the main hull on top....

004-6.jpg

006-5.jpg

007-3.jpg

This is where you can see the neck (LEFT) with only 1 ply for
the lower hull I will epoxy another piece of wood and
it will be the correct thickness around 12mm or so.
008-5.jpg

Working on the cockpit attempt #3.....:facepalm

Well the plan is to have the flat sides incorporated into
the fuselage......and make the bulkhead in the back high
enough that both neck parts will fit.......that always helps!:facepalm

I decided to make the part over sized so I can just cut
every thing back after it's formed, that's why the front
is flat.
001-8.jpg

002-9.jpg

004-7.jpg

Checking the new thicker neck parts against the bulkhead
it works now!:thumbsup
