SS Tie Bomber basic measurements

I've searched the threads and some measurements are different, others don't exist or they are old and links/pictures don't work. So I though I would start a new one in hope of it keeping current.

I can't find anything on the section between the two main tubes (before greeblies).

The width of styrene around the solar panels. -Used 1.5cm, looks right.

Layout of the scribing lines.

How far back to drill the holes for the cross tubes.

What I have found so far is

- 2" x 3.5" main tubes
- 3/4" x 9"cross tube

Thats about it, thanks for any help!

Cheers

What I did on my TB was to lay out the kit bashed parts approximately where they go and try and figure sizes that way. Hope that helps.

Sorry, meant to add that the cross tube should be brass tube at 16mm diameter. The 16mm is the inside diameter, so I drilled the fuselage tubes out at 16mm, then sanded it a little bigger, so it was a good tight fit..

I have a 16mm id and 18mm od aluminum tube (outside being the important one since a person could use just a solid piece). I understand there is no "one" set of plans so things will vary somewhat without taking away from the overall look of it. That being said I'm aiming towards not making something grossly too big or small.

Other than the Vader Tie and a Saturn, I don't have any other kits at the moment so I am trying to get the frame built while I wait. I went with 15mm wide strips of Sintra around the wings and it seems to look about right, the center box however is still eluding me.

Cheers

Are you sure Phil ? I used 20 mm OD tube on mine because that's what I had but from my calculation, they used a 3/4" tube (19.05 mm) on their model. :confused

Yeah I used 3/4" on mine as well. It looks right to me.

Thanks for the confirmation Jon !
All the other measurements can be found with the help of the kitparts (mainly the middle box) and knowing the diameter if the bodies.

If you've got a copy of the chronicals, that's a great help for this..

Phil

Really this book gives you all that you need, especially the almost perfect 1/1 front view. If you have some of the kit parts then your'e half way there. I'm sure I'm not alone in the fact that anyone that has built a Bomber has studied this book for hours and taking measures from the various views.
Of course you could have bought one of my Tie Bomber starter sets and all your worries would have been swept away lol!. But alas, the run on these has ended.

Hey guys,

Well ok, if you say it should be 20mm then 20mm it shall be :lol...
Back in '07 when I built mine, the latest info said it should be 5/8ths, or 16mm. It's posted on the old thread by flintlock. Anyhoo, that's what I went with and overall,..it's pretty close...as I posted once before, are these models ever really finished or 100% correct ?, info changes all the time.

Apologies if I've miss-led anyone, that was not my intention...just trying to help..:cry

I'm going now to look at my almost antique bomber..:love

Cheers

Looks like a good book, doesn't come cheap either does it? I did see your starter set and was tempted, but I figured it can't be too difficult to scratch it.

No worries Phil,
Yeah it was in the old thread, I built mine year later and I noticed that Allan was using a bigger than pipe than the said 16mm one. I think the good one is 3/4" (19mm) so mine is too big :)

Here Here, I'm totally in agreement with what's a few mm as well Lee!.

I used 18.5mm for the central rod and everything looked and fitted ok. 19.1mm works out well also. 20mm is starting to push it a bit too far though and will result in a fatter appearance to the model, especially as the internal wing mount measures would need to be increased as well to accommodate the extra central rod diameter. Kit parts are the true gauge though on how far you can push these measures.

Looks like I screwed up on wing extionsions, from what I can tell most models don't have slots and if they did mine are too big for the parts that goes there, oh well, easy fix.
