Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project.

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

No, they're the actual shooter designs from the movie itself. Here's a photo of the actual web shooter movie prop that they have in the NYC Toys R' Us, I believe? http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CIoiyCopzmY/T9lmf2_2cII/AAAAAAAACzs/0tMTT_2rz98/s1600/amazing-spider-man-props-9.jpg

thats what i mean the other ones are different im working on the materials to get the wrist bands made the same as the ones in the film atm and will start them as soon as i can order my shooter ect

Oh, whoops lol. I misread your last post. :p My bad.

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

I for one can't wait to see the straps you guys come up with. Can't wait for your progress pics! :thumbsup

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

I've just ordered these and i have a friend who is going to be putting tiny LEDS into the shooters, he's going to use the same ones used in the Xbox controllers so they will be really bright when they light up, i can't wait to show you guys when i have them done.

You are amazing. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Anyone working with a trigger method like MCL34N?

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

What program should I use to edit the model? A free one would be nice.

Also, in the movie, is the center section lit up all the time? I can't remember. Trying to decide if I'm gonna put in a red led for the center section, but only if it's like that in the movie. I saw when he loaded the shooters up that there was a lit up display of sorts, but did it remain illuminated after that permanently?

in the movie, the shooters lit up every time he used it. For the most part, they aren't lit when he's not shooting web. You're going to need a tinted lens for the center piece.

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

That's another project I'm working on that happened to be sitting on my bench. It's a Vu Meter and I just placed the part on top of it.

For the actual lighting, I just bought some 1.6mm LED with leads. That's about as small as you can get before going into surface mounted lighting. I bought them from here:
1.6mm LED
I got a pack of clear green and red for $6.00 shipped. Can't wait for them to get here so I can start on the electronics. :):thumbsup

Also here's a small update regarding lighting:
Here you can get a better idea of the set up that I'm going to be going with. That glass tube inside the base is something called a reed switch. It activates whenever a strong magnetic field comes into proximity.
Now, the idea is that I drill a small hole in the cartridge and place the magnet inside; so now the cartridge will act as the switch and turn on the led lights when it's inserted. Neat eh?

Awesome work so far... thanks for all the effort you've brought forth! I'm wanting to build a set for my son for his 12th birthday in Sept (placed my order from shapeways yesterday).I was hoping you could answer a couple questions regarding the electronics/lighting.
The reed switch, is that something you already had? Where can we get one? What size should we get? Is that what will power your leds (just by coming in contact with the magnet or is there something else involved)? How does that connect to the leds? Are you planning on having the red lens illumnate also? If so, how will you be doing that?
Sorry for all the questions, but electronic circuitry and such is not an area I'm well versed in - but you make it look like even I can do it!
I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's projects moving forward! Thanks again for all you (and everyone) have contributed....you've turned a lurker into a member into a poster!

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

Wooooo mine is shipping, funny enough I already have my left shooter face as I had to reorder that when they said the midel was too thin..... So I've been waiting for everything else, the ship dates comes and goes with no update, so I email just askin if they're backirdered and when it might ship. They say they'll get right on it and today I come to find it shipped.... With next day air !..... Such a nice company.

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

I'm not quite sure yet. I was wondering if you'll be selling the acrylic discs at all? I'd like to mess around with those a bit!

Haha thanks. I was looking around Autozone and thought it was the perfect color! I was planning on using magnets too. I wouldn't feel too comfortable gluing the whole thing to the lycra.

Taylor-
Just got mine in and Iam blown away.
Did you lay some kind of primer down before your Autozone blue?
I just made the holes bigger so they snap right.
Also, did you spray each piece individually?
You are awesome.

If you used a earth magnet to attach on a suit sleeve (without gluing or sewing),
Could that be used to activate the reed switch?

Yea, the place I work at has an awesome electronics repair area that happened to have this particular part in stock.

Where can we get one? What size should we get?
They're available at most any online electronic supply store. Sparkfun has them for $1.50. Smaller the better in this case :thumbsup It's one of those situations where you have a lot of room, but you really don't.

Is that what will power your leds (just by coming in contact with the magnet or is there something else involved)?
This is just a switch, no more different than an on/off button. A reed switch is basically two small slivers of metal encapsulated in a glass vial. When it comes in contact with a magnet, the two metal slivers contact each other; completing the connection.

How does that connect to the leds?
Simple answer is by wire. :lol But this is just one individual component out of several others. The sum of these components is what makes a circuit.

Are you planning on having the red lens illumnate also? If so, how will you be doing that?
Yes! Well, not the lens itself, but in that compartment there will be one or two red LED's around the chip that will illuminate.

Sorry for all the questions, but electronic circuitry and such is not an area I'm well versed in - but you make it look like even I can do it!
That's because you can do it and it really is that easy!

Yea, Shapeways has some of the best customer service I've seen in a while. Their staff are pretty knowledgeable and they do their best to answer any customer service questions that might pop up. :thumbsup

If the magnet is strong enough, I don't see why not.

Always appreciate your details.
I think I may sit back and see what you come up with.
All the while I am going to get started on painting!

Re: Spiderman web shooter: A collaborative project. Even more 3D Print Goodness!!!

Allright folks, fun update tonight!
I played with the base a bit and retrofit it to accept some LED's. :love

Basically I drilled some holes with my drill press and used my Dremel to carve out some space in the bottom. They're not perfectly aligned but it works for me. I then super glued the LED's in place.

how'd you get it to actually light up? I dunno how LED's really work :T

I'm just holding a 3V coin cell to the leads in that picture. You can see a portion of the battery in the lower right hand side by my thumb. Cool link btw, kind of wish I had seen that before hand!

Welcome to the boards, glad to have you!

LED is short for Light Emitting Diode. When you apply an electric current, it lights up! In this case I chose green LED's to fill up the fluid meter. I'm simply holding the leads of the LED's against a button cell battery. :thumbsup
